Transferring redshirt junior QB Brandon Wimbush could make a decision on his new school before the end of January.

Considering Wimbush's talent, it's been relatively quiet on the South Bend front as to where the speedy signal-caller will end up. It sounds like things are about to heat up, with the 6-foot-2, 222-pound quarterback reportedly taking visits this weekend and hoping to decide in the next 10 days. Penn State is currently viewed as the favorite in Vegas, but Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Miami -- among others -- have also been mentioned. Because Wimbush is leaving with his degree, he'll be eligible to play immediately.

Northern Illinois DE Sutton Smith accepted an invitation to the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Smith (6'1/237) has recently been practicing as a linebacker, and Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline says Smith has been "showing a lot of skill in coverage." As a redshirt junior in 2018, Smith had nation-high 15 sacks -- one more than he had in 2017 -- and 26.5 tackles for loss. A very productive player for two seasons with athleticism, Smith is a player to keep an eye on during Senior Bowl practices where he will be playing off-the-ball outside linebacker.

Florida State redshirt senior DT DeMarcus Christmas accepted an invitation to the Reese's Senior Bowl.

Christmas (6'4/308) was a late add to the South roster, but it's a great opportunity nonetheless. As a redshirt senior, Christmas made 14 tackles (3.0 for loss), but he failed to make a sack. The Draft Network's Joe Marino warns everyone to look past the lack of production and instead focus on his power. Before the season started, Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline presented Christmas with a third-round grade.

Georgia WR Terry Godwin caught four passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns for the East All-Stars in Saturday's 21-17 loss to the West All-Stars in the East-West Shrine Game.

While Godwin's squad did not come away with the win on Saturday, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound wideout very much looked the part of a prospect who has an NFL future ahead of him. Both of his touchdown grabs came in the third quarter to make a game of it after the West defense pitched a shutout in the first half. Looking beyond this game, The Draft Network's Joe Marino earlier tagged Godwin as the most consistent receiver during the Shrine practice week, while The Athletic's Dane Brugler loves him as a sleeper prospect. Our real question, now, is whether Godwin might be able to push toward a Day 2 selection. Stay tuned.

Boise State QB Brett Rypien completed 10-of-14 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown for the West All-Stars in Saturday's 21-17 win over the East All-Stars in the East-West Shrine Game.

Rypien (6'2/202) was given an extended run in the contest and performed well on the whole. He got the scoring started with a nicely-lofted 22-yard touchdown pass to LSU RB Nick Brossette early in the first quarter. As far as sleeper Day 3 quarterback prospects go, Rypien has an intriguing profile. While he does not possess an out-and-out howitzer for an arm, he generally can put enough mustard on the ball to get it where it needs to go. He also has a winning pedigree and adequate (if not spectacular) mobility.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Texas redshirt freshman QB Casey Thompson will remain with the program.

Anwar Richardson of OrangeBloods.com was first on this one, reporting via Twitter on Friday evening that Thompson had told HC Tom Herman and staff that he planned on staying with the program. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound redshirt freshman stepped into the transfer portal earlier this month. His return is a welcome one for the program in Austin, as they have already lost two quarterbacks to transfers this offseason in Shane Buechele and Cameron Rising. With Buechele and Rising out the way, now, Sam Ehlinger will be backed up by Thompson and true frosh Roschon Johnson as offseason training gets underway.

According to Ira Schoffel of Warchant.com, Florida State sophomore QB James Blackman's name has not been entered into the NCAA transfer database.

It was reported Wednesday that Blackman (6'5/181) entered his name into the database, but as of the end of business Friday his name was not listed. If a player informs a school that he wants to be entered, the school has to honor that request within 24 hours. As noted in the report things could very well change when it comes to Blackman's status, but as of now he is not listed as available to transfer. Blackman, who started 12 games in place of the injured Deondre Francois in 2017, was able to preserve a season of eligibility in 2018 as he remained under the four-game threshold.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline tweets that Alabama T Jonah Williams is getting second-round grades by scouts.

Pauline has been pumping the brakes on top-10 talk for Williams (6'5/301) after speaking with numerous NFL scouts, and he's taken it a step further after speaking with scouts at Shrine practices. The reason why his stock is falling is due to debates whether he can play tackle or if he'll need to kick inside. Playing tackle has always been more valuable, and the NFL is reportedly 50/50 on if he can remain playing outside.

Arkansas received a verbal commitment from four-star 2019 S Jalen Catalon.

Catalon had a final four of Texas, TCU, Oklahoma and Arkansas, and it's the Razorbacks who ultimately will land the signature -- assuming he hasn't signed already. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound safety is considered one of the best playmakers in the class at the free safety position, and he should have a chance to compete for immediate playing time with Arkansas. Prior to the commitment of Catalon, the Razorbacks class ranked 22nd in 247 Sports list, and that assuredly will go up with this addition.

Football Scoop reports that Joe Moglia is stepping down as HC at Coastal Carolina.

Football Scoop also reports that Coastal Carolina will promote Jamey Chadwell to be the new head coach, and Moglia will stick around the program as an administrator. The 69-year-old was in charge of bringing the Chanticleers from FCS to the Sun Belt and went 56-22 record in six seasons. He led CCU to a 5-7 record in 2018.

Redshirt freshman RB Brian Snead will not return to Ohio State.

Snead (5'11/208) was a big part of the Ohio State 2018 class, and ranked third overall at the running back position in 247 Sports composite rankings. The tailback played in the first two games of the year, but didn't appear again and was reportedly suspended for six games for violating a team rule. Assuming he transfers to an FBS program, he'll have to sit out 2020, but he'll have three more years of eligibility left. This could be a big get for another program.

Wisconsin extended the contract of HC Paul Chryst through the 2023 season.

Chryst gets the extension despite what can only be described as a disappointing season for the Badgers; going 8-5 on the year and 5-4 in conference. The overall body of work for Chryst has been solid, however, and it's reasonable to expect a bounceback season with more consistent quarterback play in 2019. Chryst has an overall record of 42-12 with Wisconsin, and he's 4-0 in bowl games.
