Dufner goes in books as first-round co-leader

Jason Dufner returned to TPC Scottsdale this morning to polish off a bogey-free, 7-under-par 31-33=64 in his opening round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, good for a share of the 18-hole lead.

Stung in a playoff here last year, Dufner has unfinished business at TPC Scottsdale. In his two-day opener this week, he hit 11 (of 14) fairways and 15 greens, sinking seven birdies along the way to catch Ryan Palmer atop the leaderboard. Among Dufner's conversions were rolls of 24'6", 36'4" and 24'3" at the first, fifth and 16th holes, respectively.

Harris English laps the field at IFQ-America

Harris English completed 36 holes of International Final Qualifying-America in 17-under-par 60-63=133, comfortably earning medalist honors and one of the eight exemptions at stake into the British Open in July.

The PGA TOUR rookie established the course record at par-70 Gleneagles Country Club in Plano, Tex. in his opening round. He converted an eagle-3 and eight birdies, including six straight at holes 3-8. He went bogey-free in his second round and buried seven birdies. Runner-up Greg Owen shot 13-under 66-61=137. Stephen Ames (69-61=130), Justin Hicks (67-63=130) and Andres Romero (67-63=130) shared third place. The final three berths were decided in a four-man playoff. Bob Estes (66-65=131) was the first to survive with a birdie on the first extra hole. Daniel Chopra (64-67=131) and James Driscoll (66-65=131) nabbed the final two exemptions, leaving Russell Knox (65-66=131) as the odd man out. The final IFQ will be held in Europe on June 25.

Six in Japan sectional qualify for U.S. Open

Brendan Jones completed 36 holes of the sectional qualifier at Lake Hamamatsu Country Club in Shizuoka, Japan in 10-under-par 66-68=134, earning medalist honors and an exemption into next month's U.S. Open.

The Aussie finished three strokes clear of Toru Taniguchi (69-68=137) in second place. The final four berths were determined in a five-man playoff. Hiroyuki Fujita (67-71=138), Tadahiro Takayama (66-72=138), J.B. Park (67-71=138) and Dong-Hwan Lee (70-68=138) all outlasted W.C. Liang (71-67=138) for the berths. Notables that failed to qualify include: 139--Ryuichi Oda ... 140--Kenichi Kuboya, Do-Hoon Kim ... 142--Azuma Yano ... 146--Prom Meesawat.

Huh nabs British berth by six FedExCup Points

John Huh was one of three golfers to receive a berth into the British Open via a special exemption reserved for the top three and ties inside the top 20 in FedExCup Points through last week's HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Huh is currently 20th on the list, five FedExCup Points clear of Steve Stricker (who is already exempt). If Huh had six fewer points, then only two golfers would have received tee times at Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club in two months. Johnson Wagner (eighth) and Kyle Stanley (12th) claimed the other exemptions.

Na squeaks into the field of the British Open

Kevin Na has qualified for the British Open for sitting inside the top 50 of the latest edition of the Official World Golf Ranking.

Na fell one spot in the OWGR since last week, but he settled at 50th to qualify. He's one of five previously ineligible to earn an exemption into the major held at Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club in July. The others are Zach Johnson (27th), Martin Laird (31st), Carl Pettersson (37th) and Robert Karlsson (45th).

Fowler headlines 25 earning U.S. Open berths

By virtue of his spot inside the top 60 in the latest Official World Golf Ranking, Rickie Fowler is exempt into next month's U.S. Open.

For the first time, the USGA expanded the eligibility to include the top 60 instead of the top 50. Fowler is currently 20th. Twenty-four others gained entry into the field at the Olympic Club with this exemption: Zach Johnson (27th); Ian Poulter (28th); Martin Laird (31st); Nicolas Colsaerts (32nd); Francesco Molinari (33rd); Carl Pettersson (37th); Thomas Bjorn (38th); Sang-moon Bae (39th); Paul Lawrie (40th); Alvaro Quiros (42nd); Simon Dyson (43rd); Ernie Els (44th); Robert Karlsson (45th); Anders Hansen (49th); Kevin Na (50th); Ben Crane (51st); Kyle Stanley (52nd); Paul Casey (54th); Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (55th); K.T. Kim (56th); Rafael Cabrera-Bello (57th); Robert Rock (58th); Ryo Ishikawa (59th); and Miguel Angel Jimenez (60th). The top 60 in the OWGR through the tournaments worldwide on June 10 will also gain entry into the major.

B. Watson to return at next week's Memorial

Bubba Watson revealed on Twitter today that he will return to competition at the Memorial on May 31-June 3.

On May 3, Watson announced that he'd be taking a few weeks off to enjoy time with his family. From a fantasy standpoint, it's never helpful in the short term when a stud rests, but the bright side is that he's not injured. If anything, finding balance in his personal life could translate into further success on the road.

A. Kim out 4-5 months; surgery not expected

Anthony Kim will take the next four or five months to rest injuries to his left forearm and right elbow.

This latest unplanned sabbatical stems from the incident at the Valero Texas Open where he struck a rock during his opening round, forcing him to withdraw after 14 holes. "I’m obviously disappointed because I’ve been fighting to get my game back on the right track and having an injury hold me back is frustrating," Kim said in a statement. "I’ve been through this process before, though, and know that you have to put in your work with treatments to get healthy. That will be my focus for the next four or five months so I’m in a position to return healthy towards the end of the year and be fully ready for 2013." He's not expected to have surgery. Given that he's not yet exempt for next year, the length of his anticipated break coincides with the minimum four-month requirement to qualify for the Major Medical Extension. Kim hopes to return in the Fall Series, but would assumingly be eligible for the MME if he doesn't earn his card after the FedExCup Playoffs.

Dufner wins the HPBNC w/ a birdie at the last

Jason Dufner stepped on the 18th tee needing a birdie to win the HP Byron Nelson Championship outright, and then rattled home a 25'5" birdie to record a one-stroke victory over Dicky Pride.

Dufner's day started off on the wrong foot, as he squared bogeys on two of his first three holes. He bounced back with birdies on the fourth, fifth and seventh to make the turn under par. He erased a birdie on the 10th with a bogey on 11, but that would be his last blemish. He tacked on birdies at 16 and 18 to end the week at 11-under 67-66-69-67=269 and secure his second victory in three starts. He put on a ball-striking clinic at the TPC Four Seasons Resort, leading the field in GIR at 80.6 percent. He was also second in driving accuracy at 75 percent. While his putting stats weren't good, he made the victory-clinching putt on the 18th when duty called. His win goes a long way towards securing him a spot on the 2012 U.S. Ryder Cup team. He will go for his third career title in this week's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Flanagan claims BMW Charity Pro-Am in playoff

After firing a final-round 4-under-par 34-33=67 at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, Nick Flanagan outlasted Cameron Percy in a three-hole playoff to claim his first Nationwide Tour victory since 2007.

Flanagan was a star on the Nationwide Tour in 2007, earning a battlefield promotion to the PGA TOUR for winning three times in one season. One of those three victories came at the BMW Charity Pro-Am. It's been a long road back for the Aussie, and he earned a spot in the playoff after making an unlikely birdie at the difficult par-4 18th when his approach bounced off the hospitality tent and rolled to 15 feet. He didn't waste his good fortune, as he went bogey-par-par in the playoff to hoist the trophy once again. He ended the week at 15-under 67-70-67-67=271 in what was his second event on the Nationwide Tour this season.

Colsaerts triumphs at Volvo World Match Play

Nicolas Colsaerts defeated Graeme McDowell 1-up in the finale of the Volvo World Match Play Championship at windy Finca Cortesin Golf Club in Casares, Spain.

After taking the par-4 16th hole with a par to go 2-up on McDowell, the Belgian failed to slam the door at the par-3 17th, missing a mid-range putt for par and the victory. However, once McDowell failed to convert on a long birdie try at the par-5 18th, Colsaerts had two putts from about 12 feet for the halve. He lagged to tap-in distance to secure his second title on the European Tour. The victory exempts him into the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, one of the events last year from which he was forced to withdraw early due to the cracked radius he sustained in his right arm the week of the British Open.

Frazar, seven others snared by 54-hole cut

Harrison Frazar had a day to forget, as he posted a 7-over-par 38-39=77 in the third round of the HP Byron Nelson Championship and missed the 54-hole cut of 5-over 215 by a stroke after making a bogey on the 18th.

Others joining Frazar on the sidelines for the finale are Robert Gamez (215), Bobby Gates (216), Alexandre Rocha (216), Tim Petrovic (217), Rocco Mediate (217), Jerry Kelly (218) and Stephen Gangluff (220).
