Luke Donald will be unable to defend his title at next week's Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic due to a scheduled medical procedure for one of his two kids.

"I’m very sorry that I will be unable to defend my title at this year’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic as that tournament was an important highlight for me in 2011," Donald said in a release. "My career as a golfer places many demands on my schedule, and I’m often forced to miss some precious time with my family as I travel to play around the world, but in this case, home is where I have to be. I wanted to be able to express my appreciation for everything that Children’s Miracle Network means to us and am happy to be able to support their work. I wish them a very successful tournament next month." The Brit took four weeks off after sharing third place at the TOUR Championship, and then posted a solo third at the BMW Masters on Sunday. He's scheduled to compete in this week's World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in China.

Sergio Garcia settled for an even-par 35-37=72 in his opening round of the BMW PGA Championship.

This, of course, was his first round since his racially motivated comment earlier in the week. Given the conditions in England today, it's not a bad score, but he saved his round with an eagle-3 at the (in)famous 18th hole. Prior to that, he holed four birdies and swallowed four bogeys and a double.

Charley Hoffman signed for a 4-under-par 36-30=66 following his opening round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Props to Blondilocks for reeling in a red number today. He started on the 10th hole and was 3-over after seven. That early stumble included a rinsed tee ball at the par-3 13th where he'd roll in a putt for bogey from 11'8". After a three-putt for bogey from just inside 20 feet at the par-4 14th, he found water off the tee again, this time at the par-3 16th. Hoffman then settled down and played his final 11 holes in bogey-free 7-under with seven birdies, four of which finding the cup from outside 12 feet. The highlight of the bunch was the first one, a 29-footer at 17. He concluded his round sitting just four strokes off the clubhouse lead.

Colonial Country Club member Ryan Palmer thrashed his home course for eight birdies en route to a bogey-free, 8-under-par 31-31=62 in his opening round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Palmer split 12 (of 14) fairways and hit 14 greens in regulation en route to a career-tying low on the PGA TOUR. It's the fifth time he's signed for a 62 and the second time this season (final round; WM Phoenix Open). Today's gave him a comfortable clubhouse lead as the afternoon wave begins. Three of his birdies disappeared from beyond 10 feet, the longest of which 17'3" at the 14th hole. At the time he signed his card, he owned the longest drive of the day (353 yards, par-5 11th hole) while his strokes gained-putting split sat north of 2.700. He tied for fifth in this event last year and posted a T5 at THE PLAYERS two weeks ago.

Retief Goosen withdrew from this week's BMW PGA Championship on Wednesday due to a lingering injury in his back.

What started as a hopeful year has rapidly devolved into a problem for his fantasy owners. Goosen withdrew during his opening round of THE PLAYERS two weeks ago due to his back. He had surgery to repair an issue last August, and then made an early return to competition in January. Entering this week, he sat 152nd in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Pat Perez withdrew from the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial during his opening round, citing a shoulder strain.

Perez started on the 10th hole and completed seven holes in birdie-free 2-over before calling it quits. He arrived in Fort Worth ranked 66th in FedExCup points. UPDATE: Perez updated his condition on Twitter, writing: "Strained nerve under collarbone. Could be a while. Damn."

Spencer Levin is scheduled to tee it up at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, on June 3, according to PGATOUR.com.

This is obviously great news. It was just on April 10 that Levin announced in a Google+ Hangout hosted by the PGA TOUR that he'd take the entire season off to recover from thumb surgery. Today's news included a note that he's going to work in starts on the Web.com Tour beginning in late August. These would be considered rehab starts in advance of the 2013-14 season that begins on Oct. 10.

An expansive article at Golf.com reveals that Brandt Snedeker learned recently that he has a rare condition in his ribs referred to as low bone turnover.

In short, Snedeker's ribs don't regenerate at the rate of a healthy 32-year-old. "I had everything tested [at the Mayo Clinic] and they found this one anomaly in my DNA," he said. "What it boils down to is that my ribs are just really brittle compared to the rest of my bones. So I’m on this medication [Forteo] that is supposed to strengthen your bones and keep this stuff from happening." (Forteo is not among the prohibited substances on the PGA TOUR's drug policy.) While he's dealt with four cracked ribs in recent years, Snedeker's latest malady was a strained oblique muscle originally sustained in January before the Humana Challenge. He played through it and capped a ridiculous run with a win at Pebble Beach. Now that he has a lid on this condition, we should expect consistently strong form moving forward. The 2012 FedExCup champ is on a two-week respite before next week's Memorial. He's posted top 10s in two of his last three starts.

D.A. Points has withdrawn from this week's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

The PGA TOUR's media department reported this. Points has cashed in seven consecutive starts, culminating with a T12 at last week's Byron Nelson, but Colonial has confounded the two-time winner. He's missed the cut in all three appearances and hasn't competed in the tournament since 2010.

Josh Teater completed 36 holes of International Final Qualifying-America in 7-under-par 64-69=133, good for medalist honors and a berth into The Open Championship.

Eight exemptions into the field at Muirfield on July 18-21 were on the line at Gleneagles Golf & Country Club in Dallas today. Teater circled 12 birdies against three bogeys and a double to secure his first start in a major. Camilo Villegas and Johnson Wagner shared runner-up honors at 6-under 68-66=134. Scott Brown (71-64) tied for fourth with Brian Davis (66-69) at 5-under 135. Brown went bogey-free in his second round with two eagles and two birdies; Davis converted nine birdies in his first round, including six in a row at one point. The final three golfers were decided in a four-way playoff. Robert Karlsson (4-under 67-69=136), Bud Cauley (70-66=136) and Luke Guthrie (65-71=136) survived with pars on the first extra hole. Andres Echavarria (67-69=136) bogeyed the playoff hole. The last of the IFQs will be contested in England on June 24.

Louis Oosthuizen has been removed from the published field of this week's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

His owners feared that this would serve as today's headline. He withdrew prior to his final round of last week's Byron Nelson due to a neck injury. Oosthuizen had planned on teeing it up in four straight culminating with next week's Memorial, so we'll have to remain patient as he deals with his malady.

Paul Goydos alerted his followers on Twitter tonight that he's hoping to return to competition at the FedEx St. Jude Classic on June 6-9.

In response to a query, Goydos wrote: "If things go well this week maybe Fed-Ex St Jude's in Memphis." The last time he was asked, he was eyeing "late spring" for a comeback. He had the second of two wrist surgeries last October. When he returns, the 48-year-old will have 21 starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $590,290 and retain status. He turns 49 on June 20.
