Rule infraction headlines Woods' missed cut

Tiger Woods missed the cut on the number at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

Woods chased his opening even-par 72 with a 75, one shot too high to play the weekend. He'd have potentially survived the cut had it not been for a two-stroke penalty on the par-4 fifth hole that resulted in a triple bogey. Thinking he had an embedded lie in ice plant off the fairway, a rules official later determined the ground underneath the plant to be sand, which is excluded offering relief from embedded lies. Woods was alerted to the infraction on the 11th hole, which he bogeyed. Three straight birdies later were followed by one last bogey at the par-4 17th hole. "I called Martin [Kaymer] over to verify the ball was embedded," said Woods, who didn't consult a rules official at the time. "We both agreed, but evidently it was sand. It's tough. I didn't get off to a very good start and I fought hard. I battled back and got it to where I thought I could play the weekend, and thought I might have a chance, just post two low rounds. But I won’t be able to do that."

Overton DQ from Colonial; putting violation

Jeff Overton was disqualified from the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial due to a rules violation at the turn during his third round.

Overton was stacked up at the turn and was offered the option to practice putting and chipping by a rules official. While doing so, he used a putting aid. That is a violation of rule 14-3/10.3. Overton took to Twitter to express his frustration in a series of tweets. He comments, "3 group back up at the turn. Rules official tells me we can practice chipping and putting. Disqualified for using my practice putting aid! Why do rules officials initiate that conversation to begin with. I wouldn't even have gone up there if I had know that. What a joke!" He was even par on his round at the time of the violation and 4-under for the tournament.

Schwartzel misses first TOUR cut in 16 starts

At even-par 70-70=140, Charl Schwartzel missed the cut at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial on the number.

The South African hit just 23 greens in regulation and neutralized five birdies with five bogeys. He wasn't in danger of missing the weekend nearing the end of his second round, but he drifted with a bogey-bogey-par close. Schwartzel had a look at birdie from 19'8" at the par-4 ninth hole but it wouldn't drop. This ends his consecutive cuts made streak at 15. His last weekend off in a PGA TOUR event occurred at last year's Open Championship. He'll attempt to begin a new streak at next week's Memorial.

Streelman misses Colonial cut on the number

Kevin Streelman signed for a pair of even-par 70s at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial and missed the cut by one stroke.

Streelman has been turning heads for a couple of months, but the attention will be diverted this weekend. He suffered five bogeys, went just 5-for-25 in birdie opportunities and missed five putts from inside 10 feet. Even when he converted a 10'5" putt at the par-4 15th hole in the second round, it was for bogey because he rinsed his approach before chipping on. He'll try again at next week's Memorial.

Second round resumes; Kuchar emerges alone

Matt Kuchar completed his second round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial this morning, posting a bogey-free, 5-under-par 31-34=65 to assume outright possession of the 36-hole clubhouse lead at 10-under 130.

Play resumed at 7:13 a.m. CT today. Kucher merely cleaned up to reach the house. For the round, he went 5-for-5 in scrambling and buried birdies from six yards off the green at the fifth holes and 30'5" at 7.

Dustin Johnson schedules return for Memorial

Dustin Johnson is listed in the published field of next week's Memorial.

Johnson has been sidelined since THE PLAYERS where he withdrew before his second round with an injury in his lower back. He then withdrew early from last week's Byron Nelson. He's a gem just about everywhere he pegs it, but his recent unreliability has redefined him as a high risk-high reward investment. He's cashed in each of his five starts at Muirfield Village where his best finish is a solo fourth in 2011.

Oosthuizen not in Memorial; out indefinitely

Louis Oosthuizen is not listed in the published field of next week's Memorial.

So much for his run of four straight starts in the U.S. He couldn't give it a go in the finale of last week's Byron Nelson due to a neck injury. Oosthuizen then withdrew early from this week's Colonial. He wanted to conclude this portion of his schedule with a start at Muirfield Village, but he may be out for a few more weeks since he was planning time off anyway to be with his wife for the birth of their third child (due on June 15). He's already announced that he will not compete in the U.S. Open (June 13-16) unless the baby is born the previous week.

Hearn 0-for-11 in birdies; 14 strokes higher

David Hearn followed his opening 64 at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial with an 8-over-par 42-36=78 in his second round to post 2-over 142 and miss the cut.

As we suggested on Thursday, he was going to have a tough time backing up his opener given his fortune with long putts while missing four inside eight feet. Indeed, the law of averages caught up with him today. He missed all 11 birdie opportunities and fanned on three attempts inside 10 feet. In addition to four bogeys, he penciled in a 7 at the par-3 13th where he rinsed both his tee ball and his third stroke.

Graham DeLaet assumes 36-hole clubhouse lead

Graham DeLaet backed up his opening 64 at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial with a 3-under-par 33-34=67 in his second round to reach the midpoint in 9-under 131, good for outright possession of the early 36-hole clubhouse lead.

The long-hitting Canadian landed 13 greens in regulation today but suffered four bogeys. He compensated with seven birdies, four of which from outside 11 feet. The longest of the set measured 22'6" at the 14th hole and 28'7" at 8. While his distance hasn't ebbed, he's also split 22 (of 28) fairways en route to 28 GIR and 12 birdies.

Back injury forces Cantlay to WD at Colonial

Patrick Cantlay withdrew during his second round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial due to a back injury.

Really? He's 21 years of age. Let's just hope that he elected not to push it and it's not serious. He was 3-over through seven holes today and 8-over through 25, so he wasn't anywhere near the cut line. Cantlay entered the week ranked sixth on the Web.com Tour money list. That position is in jeopardy since the circuit is in Mexico this week. If he's able, he'll try again at next week's Mid-Atlantic Championship.

Two-time defending champ misses BMW PGA cut

Luke Donald completed 36 holes of the BMW PGA Championship in 6-over-par 78-72=150 and will miss the cut.

No threepeat for the Brit, although he really should have been going for four in a row if not for a meltdown on the 71st hole at Wentworth in 2010 when he settled for a co-runner-up finish. This week he hit only 20 greens in regulation and still amassed 60 putts. He poured in five birdies today but still couldn't break par.

Garcia even par in his opener at Wentworth

Sergio Garcia settled for an even-par 35-37=72 in his opening round of the BMW PGA Championship.

This, of course, was his first round since his racially senstive comment earlier in the week. Given the conditions in England today, it's not a bad score, but he saved his round with an eagle-3 at the (in)famous 18th hole. Prior to that, he holed four birdies and swallowed four bogeys and a double.
