Justin Peters spun a bogey-free, 8-under-par 31-33=64 at Pinnacle Country Club in Milan, Ill., in today's open qualifier for the John Deere Classic.
Fans of the original "The Big Break" on Golf Channel will recall Peters' victory in the made-for-TV competition. That was back in 2003. Overall, he's 0-for-3 on the PGA TOUR but played regularly on the Web.com Tour in 2010 before tapering off the following season. Today he buried eight birdies, including on each of the four par 5s, to earn his first start in the big leagues since 2006. John Kimbell took runner-up honors at 7-under 33-32=65; he also circled eight birdies but swallowed one bogey. Connor Arendell took third at bogey-free, 6-under 35-31=66 with six birdies. The final berth into the John Deere Classic went to Chris Naegel, who completed regulation in 5-under 32-35=67 (6 birdies, 1 bogey). He then outlasted one of last week's four-spotters, Brad Adamonis (33-34=67; eagle at the par-4 fifth hole, 6 birdies, 3 bogeys), and Matt Thompson (34-33=67; 6 birdies, 1 bogey) in a three-man playoff. The field at TPC Deere Run is now complete at 156.
