Rickie Fowler rallied late for a 2-under-par 37-32=69 in the finale of the Quicken Loans National to snare runner-up honors at 15-under 269, three shots adrift of champion Troy Merritt.
Although not netting him a win this time, like at THE PLAYERS in May, Fowler finished in similar fashion, circling birdies on three of his last five holes, including a walk-off 3 at the last from just outside 23 feet for his eighth career runner-up finish. The 26-year-old played the 18th tied with David Lingmerth, in at 14-under, prior to the dramatics. Fowler began the day at 13-under (solo third) and just one back of Merritt and Kevin Chappell. Playing in the penultimate pairing, he penciled seven birdies on the card, but similar to yesterday, he squared too many bogeys to win. In total, he bagged 24 birdies on the week, first in the tournament in that category, and an ace, but also squared 11 bogeys, including five today, T58 in that stat. His previous-best finish at the Quicken Loans (three starts) was T13 in 2011. He's projected to jump to 16th in the FedExCup standings ahead of this week's World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.
