Tommy Gainey torched Glen Abbey Golf Club for 10 birdies in his second-round, 8-under-par 34-30=64 at the RBC Canadian Open.

Gainey is no stranger to finding the flame. He went 10-for-13 in birdie opportunities today. Five of his par breakers fell in from outside 11 feet, including rolls from 19'2", 17'4" and 40'1" at the 15th, fourth and ninth holes, respectively. One of his two bogeys occurred at the par-5 18th where he rinsed his second going for the green. At the time he signed his card, Gainey's strokes gained-putting split sat north of 6.350! He reached the midpoint in 7-under 137, four strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

Chris Wood produced another dominant display to beat Jorge Campillo 5&4 in the second round of the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Matchplay in Scotland.

For the second match running, the Englishman was ahead from the very first hole and, once again, he closed out the contest on the 14th hole at Murcar Links GC. Wood was 2up after 2 thanks to a pair of opening birdies and won the next via a concession from the Spaniard. Another par breaker increased Wood's lead to 4up after 5 and although Campillo stayed in the game by winning 8 and 9 with birdies, Wood captured 10, 12 and 14 to book his place in the last 16. He said, "It was good to get another good win under my belt, a second 5 and 4, which is great to conserve the energy for hopefully a potentially long weekend. I started off really nicely and when you get a nice lead like that early on, it is quite hard to come back." Wood now faces Julien Quesne, who defeated Jeev Milkha Singh 4&3.

David Lingmerth hung up a 6-under-par 33-32=65 in today's second round of the Quicken Loans National to post 9-under 133, good for sole possession of the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

He was able to go one lower than the 36-hole clubhouse quad-leaders thanks to a birdie try that fell from just inside 20 feet at the par-3 ninth hole where Lingmerth concluded today's trot around Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. He totaled seven birdies in all, including a pair ranging 10-18 feet. The Swede's only blemish occurred at the par-3 fourth where he three-putted from just outside 80 feet. That's quite fine given he went 7-for-7 in scrambling. At last check, the recent winner in Ohio ranked fifth in strokes gained: putting with an aggregate clip of 4.815.
Jul 31 - 1:16 PM

Scotland's Marc Warren beat Fabrizio Zanotti 3&2 at Murcar Links GC on Friday to book his place in the last 16 of the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Matchplay.

In a match where neither man could ever open up daylight, the two players arrived at the 14th tee still all square after the Paraguayan had levelled their last-32 contest again at the 13th. But a par put Warren back in front, he went 2up with a birdie-3 at the 15th and the local favorite closed out his opponent with a winning par at the short 16th. Warren, who edged out England's Richard Bland by 1 hole in the opening round of the 64-man straight knockout tournament, will now play Nicolas Colsaerts (a 4&3 winner over Trevor Fisher, Jr.) for a place in the last eight.
Jul 31 - 1:14 PM

Tiger Woods has risen into a share of the 36-hole clubhouse lead at the Quicken Loans National with a 5-under-par 34-32=66 in today's second round.

With a 3-under 68 on Thursday, the 39-year-old tournament host is 8-under 134 at the midpoint. He opened the tournament with bogeys on three of his first four holes, but has since rattled in a field-high 12 (at the time he signed today's card). Today's set of six included conversions from 10'6", 19'10" and a fist-bumping-inducing 35'9" at Nos. 18, 4 and 8, respectively. Overall, Woods has striped 18 (of 28) fairways and landed 28 greens in regulation. With iron play the leading factor of success, at least early at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, it's no surprise that his aggregate 4.778 in strokes gained: tee-to-green is outpacing his aggregate 1.226 in strokes gained: putting. But above all of that, it's refreshing to see the former top-ranked golfer in the world capitalize on scorable conditions. His game will no doubt be tested on the weekend.
Jul 31 - 1:09 PM

Greg Owen chased his bogey-free 66 to open the Quicken Loans National with a bogey-free, 3-under-par 34-34=68 in today's second round.

He joined Pat Perez as a co-leader at the midpoint at 8-under 134. Owen was one of 13 golfers without a blemish on Thursday. Today, he went 3-for-3 in scrambling and circled three birdies, the gem measuring 29'11" at the par-5 eighth hole. At last check, he ranked third in the field in strokes gained: tee-to-green with an aggregate clip of 6.851, but owned a negative split in strokes gained: putting (-0.832). That's not too surprising on a course where few in the field had any experience on the greens at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

Ryo Ishikawa authored a bogey-free, 8-under-par 30-33=63 in today's opening round of the Quicken Loans National, good for a share of the clubhouse lead with two-time Presidents Cup teammate Retief Goosen.

This was a round to remember in multiple ways for the 23-year-old from Japan. He missed four (of 14) fairways and four greens in regulation but connected six birdies beginning at the par-5 14th hole. The string featured conversions from 23 feet, 17'6" and 16'8" at Nos. 16, 17 and 18, respectively. After pars at the par-4 second and third holes, Ishikawa jarred his tee ball at the par-3 fourth with an 8-iron from 178 yards. (You can view the shot at the link below.) At last check, he ranked third in both strokes-gained stats. The ace is his second on the PGA TOUR. His first occurred on the par-3 eighth hole of Trump International Golf Club in the third round of the 2013 Puerto Rico Open.
Jul 30 - 4:17 PM

Rickie Fowler punctuated a 4-under-par 34-33=67 in today's opening round of the Quicken Loans National with a hole-in-one at the par-3 ninth hole.

He three-jacked the par-5 eighth hole for bogey, and then laced a 7-iron from 184 yards at the last for the ace. (You can view the shot at the link below.) Overall, Fowler hit 13 greens in regulation and added four birdies, the longest from 12'10" at the par-4 13th. He's four swings adrift of the clubhouse lead. Incidentally, today's 1 is his second in 141 PGA TOUR starts as a pro. The first occurred in the final round of the 2009 Frys.com Open at Grayhawk Golf Club. He holed his tee ball on the par-3 fifth from 211 yards that day and would eventually lose in a playoff to Troy Matteson. That's the same tournament in which Jamie Lovemark's approach on the first hole in the playoff landed in the water and hopped onto dry land. Lovemark went on to save par on the hole before also getting clipped by Matteson on the next hole.
Jul 30 - 3:23 PM

Antonio Hortal carded a 9-under-par 33-30=63 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the rescheduled Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI.

It's no surprise to see the Spaniard leading at Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra as he finished T3 in this event last year. Today, he started slowly with two pars and a bogey in his opening three holes but an eagle-3 at 7 along with birdies at 5 and 9 took him to the turn in 3-under. But it was on the back nine that the 26-year-old really came alive as he circled birdies at 10, 11, 13, 14, 16 and 17 to surge to the top of the leaderboard. He's one shot clear of fellow Spaniard Nacho Elvira and two in front of New Zealand's Ryan Fox and Frenchman Sebastien Gros. An eight-man group on 5-under -- that's four shots back -- includes Portugal's Ricardo Santos. Extreme weather conditions caused the cancellation of the original tournament in March.
Jul 30 - 3:09 PM

Retief Goosen spun a bogey-free, 8-under-par 32-31=63 in today's opening round of the Quicken Loans National to establish outright possession of the clubhouse lead.

The South African was stranded in the fairway at the par-4 18th when play was suspended for inclement weather at 12:50 p.m. ET. He parred the hole after the restart at 2:27 p.m.. Overall, Goosen split 10 (of 14) fairways and missed only one green in regulation en route to his lowest aggregate on the PGA TOUR since he signed for the same following the third round of the 2012 RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf & Country Club. Three of today's eight birdies found the cup from outside 10 feet, the longest taping off at 30'3" at the par-5 eighth hole.
Jul 30 - 2:45 PM

Steve Wheatcroft hung up a bogey-free, 6-under-par 33-32=65 for his opening round of the Quicken Loans National, good for sole possession of the clubhouse lead.

His lead won't hold, but it lays the latest brick in his quest to snipe his first victory on the PGA TOUR. This is his 104th start. Wheatcroft hit only 11 greens in regulation, but he wrangled three birdies on each nine. His most impressive rolled nearly 33 feet for a 3 at the second hole. His closest brush with bogey occurred at the par-4 17th where he pulled his approach well left of the green but eventually coaxed a par try in from 16'6". At last check, Wheatcroft ranked third in the field in strokes gained: putting with a clip of 3.415. Incidentally, lift, clean and place is in effect due to the threat of today's inclement weather.
Jul 30 - 12:46 PM

Richie Ramsay produced a superb fightback to beat India's Shiv Kapur by 1 hole in the opening round of the inaugural Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Matchplay.

Despite holding the course record at Murcar Links GC and growing up near the Aberdeen venue, Ramsay found himself three down to Kapur after losing the 4th, 5th and 7th. But the Scot clawed his way back into the match with winning birdies at the 8th and 11th before making it all square with a par at the 14th. After trading pars at the 15th and 16th, Ramsay edged in front for the first time with a birdie at the 17th and closed out victory with a 20-footer for another at the par-4 18th after Kapur had fired his approach to eight feet. The Aberdeen native, who will take on Italy's Edoardo Molinari (a 5&4 winner over Magnus A Carlsson) in the last 32, said, "The most pleasing thing is playing well under pressure. There is no better feeling."
