William McGirt crafted a 5-under-par 31-35=66 in his opening round of the RBC Heritage, earning a piece of the overnight lead.
We've stated it here before, but it happened again today. McGirt found another gear with his putter despite hitting only 11 greens in regulation. He connected four birdies beginning at the second hole, the last three of which measuring 11 feet, 14'9" and 20'11", respectively. He made the turn with another birdie conversion at 9, this time from 11'6". After a bogey-6 at 15, his only blemish of the round, the North Carolina native rolled in a par save from 12'4" at 16, and then holed out for birdie from a bunker 14 yards out at the par-3 17th. At last check, his strokes gained-putting split, which doesn't include the jarred bunker blast, sat at a gaudy 4.757. He arrived at Harbour Town ranked 32nd on the PGA TOUR in SG-P, but has just two top 25s in 14 starts.
