In the first threesome off No. 1 tee, World No. 91 Ryan Palmer tossed up a 4-under-par 33-35=68 on Moving Day at the Valero Texas Open to post 6-under 210, up 33 places on the live leaderboard to T3 and good for the early 54-hole clubhouse lead. UPDATE: With play completed, Palmer's 68 was the low round of the day and is in a 7-way T4, two back of 54-hole leader Kevin Chappell.
On a cool, blustery day at TPC San Antonio, the 40-year-old's 68 is currently 6.341 strokes better than the field average and that margin is likely to expand. This is his 15th VTO and owns three prior top 10s, including back-to-backs in the last two editions of T6/2015 and T4 last year (68-70-72-69). After opening in 74-68, the Texan began T36 on 2-under, six back of co-leaders Bud Cauley and Tony Finau. He landed nine (of 14) fairways and 12 greens in regulation, gaining 3.419 strokes tee-to-green. The Texas A&M alum squared a lone bogey-4 at 13, outpaced by five birdies at Nos. 5, 6 (from 56'1"), 8, 17 (15'5") and 18, walking off with a 9'6" birdie-4 for 1,667 putts per GIR and 3.003 SG: Putting. His season best and lone top 30 in eight events is T11 last week at the RBC Heritage.
