Padres manager Bud Black said an MRI on Dustin Moseley's right shoulder revealed "extensive damage."

"He's going to be shut down for a period of time that will take him past 15 days," Black said. "I know it's frustrating. I'm bummed for him." While Black wouldn't discuss a timetable for the right-hander, it sure sounds like surgery, which may or may not end his season, is possible. With Tim Stauffer (elbow) not quite ready, the Padres could call up Joe Wieland to make his major league debut Saturday.

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Angels are close to acquiring David Murphy from the Indians.

Murphy was a late scratch from the Tribe's lineup Tuesday and now we know why. While it won't be a headline-grabbing move, Murphy should be a nice upgrade for the Angels in left field, as he's batting .296/.344/.437 this season and has always been a pretty good hitter versus righties. He should form a platoon with Shane Victorino and spell the end of Matt Joyce's days in Anaheim.

Ryan Braun (back) remained out of the Brewers' lineup Tuesday.

It's the second straight game he's missed with lower back tightness. Braun is considered day-to-day. Gerardo Parra is in right field Tuesday, with Khris Davis covering left.

Major League Baseball has suspended RHP Jenrry Mejia 162 games for a second positive PED test.

Mejia tested positive for Stanozolol and Boldenone. The reliever just returned from an 80-game ban three weeks ago and inexplicably was busted again. The Mets' acquisition of Tyler Clippard looks even bigger now.
Jul 28 - 6:22 PM

Mike Trout (wrist) will undergo an MRI Tuesday.

Trout tweaked his left wrist during Sunday's game. The Angels don't seem worried at this point and think he's probably just day-to-day, but they wanted to send him for an MRI just to be safe. More should be available on his status later Tuesday.

According to FOX Sports' Jon Morosi, a trade sending Jonathan Papelbon to the Nationals has been "agreed upon."

MLB.com's Todd Zolecki says the Phillies will receive pitching prospect Nick Pivetta in the deal. Papelbon is expected to take over as the Nationals' closer, pushing Drew Storen into a setup role. There should be something more official shortly.
Jul 28 - 5:51 PM

Nationals activated 1B Ryan Zimmerman from the 15-day disabled list.

Zimmerman missed over a month and a half with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He went 1-for-15 on his rehab assignment and is batting just .209/.265/.346 in 234 plate appearances this season for the Nationals.
Jul 28 - 4:38 PM

Nationals activated OF Jayson Werth from the 60-day disabled list.

Werth is in the Nationals' starting lineup on Tuesday night for the first time since mid-May. He missed over two months with a pair of small fractures in his left wrist. The veteran outfielder hit well on his lengthy minor league rehab assignment and should be safe for immediate activation in fantasy leagues.
Jul 28 - 4:36 PM

Randal Grichuk (groin) is out of the Cardinals' starting lineup again on Tuesday night.

Grichuk is still nursing a groin injury, though an MRI taken Monday showed nothing serious. Peter Bourjos will start in center field against the Reds and Mike Leake.
Jul 28 - 4:34 PM

Yadier Molina (illness) is back in the Cardinals' starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Reds.

Molina made an early exit from Monday's game because he wasn't feeling well. It obviously wasn't anything major. He is batting fifth versus righty Mike Leake.
Jul 28 - 4:32 PM

Royals designated RHP Joe Blanton for assignment.

The move clears a 40-man roster spot for Johnny Cueto. Blanton had a 3.89 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 40/7 K/BB ratio in 41 2/3 innings (four starts, 11 relief appearances) this season for Kansas City. He is 34 years old but will probably draw interest on waivers.
Jul 28 - 4:30 PM

Henderson Alvarez is undergoing shoulder surgery.

Alvarez was examined this week by Dr. James Andrews, who apparently recommended the shoulder procedure. The 25-year-old right-hander was limited to just four starts this season because of what was originally labeled shoulder inflammation. It's not clear if he'll be ready by next spring. Shoulders are often trickier than elbows.
