Daisuke Matsuzaka (elbow) will make his third rehab start this week at Triple-A Pawtucket.

Dice-K allowed just one run over 4 2/3 innings Saturday at the Double-A level in what was his second rehab outing. If everything continues to go smoothly, he could join the Red Sox starting rotation in mid-May. The 31-year-old right-hander has made a swift recovery from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.

Brewers placed 1B Eric Thames on the 10-day disabled list with a torn UCL in his left thumb.

Awful news, as Thames was having another tremendous April. UCL thumb tears can sometimes cost players as much as two months and sap power production even when the player returns. Jesus Aguilar will get a boost in starts at first base in Thames' absence, and Ryan Braun could also see more action at the position. Thames had a .976 OPS and seven home runs through 22 games this season for Milwaukee.

Orioles placed INF Tim Beckham on the 10-day disabled list with a left groin strain.

Beckham initially injured his groin during spring training and then reaggravated it in Monday's game against the Indians. He could be sidelined for three or even four weeks. Danny Valencia is at third base and batting sixth on Wednesday night against the Rays.
Apr 25 - 3:29 PM

Kris Bryant (head) remains out of the Cubs' starting lineup Wednesday night against the Indians.

Bryant took a pitch off his helmet on Sunday and hasn't played since, though he did pass his initial round of concussion tests. Tommy La Stella is starting at third base and batting fifth for the Cubs on Wednesday versus Cleveland right-hander Trevor Bauer.
Apr 25 - 3:26 PM

Jose Abreu left Wednesday's game against the Mariners after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Abreu was 0-for-2 before getting replaced at first base by Matt Davidson to begin the top of the fourth inning. The veteran slugger might have to sit out Thursday's series opener at Kansas City.
Apr 25 - 3:23 PM

Rays purchased the contract of LHP Jonny Venters from Triple-A Durham.

Venters is back in the majors for the first time since 2012. The 33-year-old southpaw has undergone three different Tommy John surgeries, but he was one of the best relievers in baseball before his elbow gave out. Venters, who owns a 2.23 ERA and 10.1 K/9 in 229 2/3 career major league innings, will likely work in a lefty setup role for Tampa Bay.
Apr 25 - 3:20 PM

Mac Williamson was scratched from the Giants' starting lineup on Wednesday due to neck stiffness.

Williamson tripped and crashed hard into the left field wall while chasing down a foul ball on Tuesday night, though he did stay in the game initially. Gregor Blanco will start in left field and Austin Jackson will play center field Wednesday versus the Nationals. Williamson has three home runs and six RBI in six games since joining the Giants on April 20 as the corresponding move for Hunter Pence (thumb) landing on the disabled list. He should stick around when Pence returns.
Apr 25 - 3:07 PM

Braves purchased the contract of OF Ronald Acuna from Triple-A Gwinnett.

The day is finally here. Acuna has met up with the Braves in Cincinnati and will start in left field and bat sixth in his MLB debut Wednesday night against the Reds. The 20-year-old top outfield prospect got off to a sluggish start this season at Triple-A Gwinnett, but he then went 11-for-33 (.333) with a homer, a double, four walks, and three stolen bases over his final eight games in the International League. Acuna slashed .325/.374/.522 with 21 home runs, 82 RBI, 44 stolen bases, and 88 runs scored in 139 games last season between three different levels of the Braves' minor league system. Look out, world.
Apr 25 - 1:56 PM

Christian Villanueva (hamstring) remains out of the Padres' starting lineup on Wednesday.

Villanueva has been out all week with a sore hamstring, though the expectation is that he will be ready to rock Friday after Thursday's scheduled team off-day. Chase Headley is starting at third base and batting fifth Wednesday afternoon against Rockies right-hander Jon Gray. Wil Myers is at first base and batting third with Eric Hosmer still away on family medical emergency leave.
Apr 25 - 12:29 PM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Wednesday that Shohei Ohtani now has a callus where his blister was.

That's a good sign that this won't become a lingering thing. Ohtani has struggled in his last two starts, but he faced two of the top lineups in the major leagues between the Astros and Red Sox. The two-way star is lined up to face the last-place Orioles at home in his next pitching appearance. He's slashing .333/.378/.619 with three home runs in 45 plate appearances as a part-time DH.
Apr 25 - 12:25 PM

Wei-Yin Chen (elbow) is scheduled to make his season debut on Saturday night against the Rockies.

Chen struck out seven batters over five scoreless frames in his last minor league rehab start Sunday at High-A Jupiter, giving him a 1.17 ERA and 11/1 K/BB ratio in 7 2/3 total rehab frames. He's been an effective fantasy starter in the past and might be worth consideration in some deeper formats. The 32-year-old southpaw has missed the first four weeks of the 2018 regular season because of a partially torn ligament in his left elbow.
Apr 25 - 12:27 AM

Andrelton Simmons went 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI in leading the Angels to an 8-7 win over the Astros on Tuesday.

Lindor? Correa? Didi? Machado? Simmons still has as good of an argument as anyone for the claim of the AL's best shortstop. He's the best defender of the group, of course, and he's hitting .317 with 13 RBI and a nice 6/10 K/BB ratio in 94 plate appearances this year.
