Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Angels are expected to pursue Zack Greinke at the trade deadline if he's made available.

The division rival Rangers are also known to have interest in the right-hander, though they seem to prefer Cole Hamels among the upper-tier starters that could be available. The Braves and Orioles have also been mentioned as suitors for Greinke, though Heyman was told by a person close to the righty that the Halos are viewed as "a perfect fit.''

Justin Verlander (shoulder) threw a successful 35-pitch bullpen session on Thursday morning.

Verlander then walked into the office of Tigers manager Brad Ausmus and got a high-five, signifying that he will indeed return to the starting rotation this Saturday against the Twins. Verlander owns a rough 4.76 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 158 2/3 innings this season and is likely to remain a risky fantasy play down the stretch. He's been sidelined since August 11 due to shoulder inflammation.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) is scheduled to face live hitters on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

It'll be his first taste of simulated action since being diagnosed with a partially-torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow back in early July. That injury pretty much always leads to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, but Tanaka is trying the rehab route first and having success with it so far. He threw all of his sliders in a 35-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon. The Japanese ace is aiming to return sometime in September.

Cubs third base prospect Kris Bryant went 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk on Wednesday for Triple-A Iowa.

Bryant now leads the minor leagues with 41 home runs, putting up a .336/.444/.684 slash line between Double-A and Triple-A. His bat is ready for the major leagues, but his defense is still a work in progress and his future defensive home remains up in the air. Bryant has MVP potential, and should be up in early 2015.

According to MLB.com's Corey Brock, closer Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) may need a disabled list stint.

Benoit hasn't pitched since last Wednesday due to some crankiness in his right shoulder. Kevin Quackenbush earned his first save of the season on Wednesday night against the Dodgers and is worth grabbing in all mixed fantasy leagues for the stretch run. Shoulder injuries tend to linger, and Quackenbush owns a strong 2.29 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 37/13 K/BB ratio in 39 1/3 innings this year.

Lance Lynn silenced the Reds on Wednesday, tossing seven shutout innings to earn his 14th win of the season.

Lynn limited the Reds to four hits and a pair of walks while striking out five. He is now one win off of the major league lead, and carries a 2.78 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP and a 144/57 K/BB ratio. He'll take the mound next on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
Aug 20 - 11:29 PM

Scott Feldman earned his seventh win of the season, limiting the Yankees to two runs over 6 2/3 innings on Wednesday.

Feldman was excellent, holding the Yankees to only two extra-base hits over the course of the evening. Overall, he surrendered eight hits, walked two, and struck out seven. He was in line for the loss until the Astros' offense put up a four-run seventh inning. The right-hander has a 4.37 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP, and a 78/42 K/BB ratio. Feldman will toe the rubber on Monday at home against the Athletics next.
Aug 20 - 10:44 PM

Anthony Rendon pinch-hit and lifted a walk-off RBI single to left field in the ninth inning of Wednesday's win over the D'Backs.

Rendon got the night off, with Kevin Frandsen starting at third base in his place. But as the Nats squandered a 2-0 lead in the eighth, Rendon picked up his team by playing the hero. The third baseman is having a great season, slashing .278/.333/.462 with 16 home runs, 68 RBI, and 12 stolen bases.

A source tells Bruce Levine of 670 The Score that Starlin Castro could miss up to a week after the death of a relative and three of his friends in the Dominican Republic.

Castro was a late scratch from the Cubs lineup on Wednesday, and now we know why. According to Levine, the deaths came as a result of a car crash in Castro's native country. With the Cubs having little left to play for they'll certainly give Castro as much time as he needs in this tragic situation. He'll likely be placed on the bereavement list in the coming days.
Aug 20 - 10:11 PM

Gerrit Cole got a no-decision in his first start after being activated from the disabled list, yielding two runs over seven innings as the Pirates defeated the Braves on Wednesday.

Cole had been on the shelf since July 5 with a strained right lat. He walked four batters, but was able to throw 61 of 97 pitches for strikes. He also allowed five hits while striking out six. The right-hander sports a 3.69 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and an 84/33 K/BB ratio. Cole will face the Cardinals at home on Tuesday next.
Aug 20 - 10:08 PM

Rick Porcello was stellar on Wednesday, blanking the Rays over nine innings en route to his 14th win.

This is Porcello's third shutout of the season, the most in the American League and tying him with Henderson Alvarez for the MLB lead. The Rays couldn't get anything going against the right-hander, as Porcello yielded only three hits and no walks while striking out four. The effort lowers his ERA to 3.10 and he has a 1.12 WHIP and 100/32 K/BB ratio to go along with it. Porcello will face the Yankees at home in his next start on Tuesday.
Aug 20 - 9:56 PM

Victor Martinez went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI double, and a grand slam in Wednesday's shutout win against the Rays.

Martinez put the Tigers on the board in the top of the first with an RBI double and later extended his club's lead to 6-0 with a seventh-inning grand slam off of Kirby Yates. The veteran now has 24 home runs on the season, one off of his career-high. He's also sitting on 79 RBI and a .325/.392/.553 slash line.
