Ellsbury will be activated from DL Friday

Jacoby Ellsbury (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the disabled list for the start of the second half Friday.

Ellsbury has batted only .185/.290/.370 over eight rehab games, but the important thing is he hasn't had any setbacks physically and is ready to re-take his center field duties in Beantown. The Sox will also get Carl Crawford back before long, creating a logjam in their outfield that they hope to solve by dealing Ryan Sweeney.

The Rockies will option Josh Rutledge to Triple-A Colorado Springs prior to Friday's game.

Hiroki Kuroda leaves start with bruised calf

Hiroki Kuroda left Wednesday's start against the Orioles in the third inning with a bruised right calf.

Kuroda was hit on the calf by a comebacker in the previous inning, and it evidently tightened up on him. All things considered, it's good news for the Yankees, though it remains to be seen if Kuroda will be ready for his next start. He was charged with five runs on eight hits over two frames before exiting.

Slowey forced from outing with lat strain

Kevin Slowey left Wednesday's start against the Phillies after the fifth inning with a left lat strain.

The Marlins are calling him day-to-day, so it's evidently a minor strain. Still, he'll likely be re-evaluated on Thursday before it's determined whether he can make his next start. Slowey was pitching well Wednesday before getting hurt, tossing five innings of one-run ball on six hits and no walks while recording six strikeouts.

Westbrook (elbow) has to halt bullpen session

Jake Westbrook had to stop his bullpen session Wednesday after 20 pitches due to pain in his right elbow.

Well, that's not good. Westbrook felt fine while playing catch, but this was the first time since landing on the disabled list that he tried to throw from a mound. The right-hander isn't sure what the next step is, but obviously he's not going to be back anytime soon.

Roy Halladay shooting for late August return

Roy Halladay (shoulder) could rejoin the Phillies' rotation in late August if everything progresses on schedule.

Halladay, who had surgery last week to remove a bone spur in his shoulder and repair his torn rotator cuff, reported to extended spring training Monday to begin his rehab. General manager Ruben Amaro said Doc has pretty good range of motion and is "pretty positive." Obviously late August is so far away that it's just a rough timetable, but, given Halladay's famous work ethic, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him pitching later this season.

Jose Bautista homers twice in Blue Jays' win

A one-man offense, Jose Bautista went 4-for-4 with two homers and a game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th as the Blue Jays edged the Rays 4-3 on Wednesday.

Bautista singled in the Jays' first run in the first, homered in the fourth, homered again off Fernando Rodney to tie it in the ninth and then hit a little liner to right to end the game in the 10th. The four-hit game was Bautista's first since July 27, 2010. He hadn't even had a three-hit game in a year -- oddly enough, his last one came May 22, 2012 against the same Rays team.

Fernando Rodney blows save and gets pulled

Fernando Rodney took his fourth blown save in giving up a Jose Bautista solo homer Wednesday against the Jays.

That alone would hardly be grounds for termination. Rays manager Joe Maddon, though, showed zero confidence in Rodney when he pulled him in favor of Joel Peralta after Adam Lind's one-out walk. If Rodney loses his job over this one, it'd most likely be a short-term move; he's got every opportunity to win it right back if he shows better command. Peralta would be in line for saves in his place.

Maybin beginning rehab assignment Friday

Cameron Maybin (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson on Friday.

The Padres want Maybin to get around 30 rehab at-bats, so he should return sometime next week. The outfielder has been sidelined since mid-April with a nagging right wrist ailment.

Quentin out again Wednesday after injection

Carlos Quentin is out of the Padres' lineup again Wednesday after receiving an injection in his left knee Tuesday.

The Padres were expecting Quentin to miss just one game after he aggravated his chronic knee injury on an awkward slide Monday. They changed their minds, though, deciding to give him the injection in hopes that he'll be ready on Friday after Thursday's off day. Jesus Guzman is playing left field Wednesday.

Freese (thumb) sitting out again Wednesday

David Freese (thumb) is out of the Cardinals' lineup again Wednesday.

He's now missed three straight games due to swelling around his right thumb where he needed three stitches for a small cut. The Cards are worried that cut could split open, so they're playing things cautiously. Freese could be back in there Friday after the off day Thursday. Matt Carpenter is at third again Wednesday, with Daniel Descalso covering second.

Youkilis 'getting closer' to playing in game

Kevin Youkilis (back) took six at-bats in a simulated game Wednesday.

It was reported previously that Youkilis played in an extended spring game Tuesday, but that was actually also a simulated game. It's not clear when he'll be ready to play in a real game, but he's not far off. "I can’t tell you," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I think you have to give him a few days in a row before you evaluate to make sure that his back is healed and it doesn’t come back. The last two days have been pretty good, so he’s getting closer."
