Reds manager Dusty Baker said Joey Votto (knee) is unlikely to be activated from the disabled list during the team's road trip.

That means we won't see him until August 14, at the earliest. Votto went through another strenuous workout Tuesday and said he's "running right at 100 percent," but Baker wants him to show he can slide without any issues before being activated. "I’m still thinking the same," Baker said. "Just because you’ve hit and you’re moving better . . . He’s training hard. He’s not too far. I’m just not thinking on this road trip. If you’ve had a knee injury the one key obstacle you have to overcome is sliding."

Kevin Gausman will pitch out of the bullpen during the Orioles' ALDS matchup with the Tigers.

It's not really a surprise. Gausman posted a solid 3.57 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 88/38 K/BB ratio across 113 1/3 innings this season and is a big part of the Orioles' future, but the 23-year-old right-hander will take a backseat to the more-experienced foursome of Chris Tillman, Miguel Gonzalez, Wei-Yin Chen, and Bud Norris.

Darren Wolfson of 1500-ESPN reports that the Twins will interview Paul Molitor for their managerial vacancy on Thursday.

This confirms a report from La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Twins bench coach Terry Steinbach is also expected to interview for the job, but Wolfson is calling Molitor the "front-runner." The Hall of Famer hasn't managed before, but he has extensive coaching experience and was on the Twins' staff this season with a focus on baserunning, bunting, in-game strategy, and infield instruction.
Oct 1 - 4:07 PM

Travis Ishikawa will start in left field and bat eighth in Wednesday's Wild Card Game against the Pirates.

With Angel Pagan (back) and Michael Morse (oblique) sidelined, Ishikawa started three out of the last four games of the regular season in left field. Despite his inexperience at the position, he'll remain there for Wednesday's do-or-die game. The full lineup: Gregor Blanco CF, Joe Panik 2B, Buster Posey C, Pablo Sandoval 3B, Hunter Pence RF, Brandon Belt 1B, Brandon Crawford SS, Ishikawa LF, Madison Bumgarner LHP.
Oct 1 - 3:55 PM

Jason Vargas will start Game 1 of the ALDS against the Angels on Thursday.

Vargas, who pitched for the Angels in 2013, had a 3.71 ERA across 30 starts this season with Kansas City. Danny Duffy was the likely alternative for the Game 1 assignment. The rest of the rotation for the series has yet to be announced.
Oct 1 - 3:47 PM

Russell Martin (groin) is in the Pirates' starting lineup for Wednesday's Wild Card Game against the Giants.

Martin missed the Pirates' final two regular season game after aggravating a lingering groin injury, but he's not going to miss Wednesday's do-or-die contest. The full lineup: Josh Harrison 3B, Jordy Mercer SS, Andrew McCutchen CF, Martin C, Starling Marte LF, Neil Walker 2B, Gaby Sanchez 1B, Travis Snider RF, Edinson Volquez SP.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Diamondbacks have added Joe McEwing to their list of managerial candidates.

McEwing has been the White Sox third base coach for the past three seasons and has strong ties to Diamondbacks chief baseball officer Tony La Russa. Sandy Alomar, Jr., Jim Tracy, Jay Bell, Andy Green, Phil Nevin, and Turner Ward are among the other names Arizona is considering to replace Kirk Gibson.
Oct 1 - 2:48 PM

Rajai Davis (groin) is feeling improvement, but still needs to do more baseball work before the Tigers decide on his status for the ALDS against the Orioles.

Davis exited Saturday's game with a Grade 1 groin strain and has been receiving daily treatment since, but the real test will be doing baseball activities. The Tigers could still put him on the roster even if he's not a full-go for Game 1. A final decision should come on Thursday.
Oct 1 - 2:41 PM

Jose Fernandez threw Wednesday for the first time since Tommy John surgery.

Fernandez, who had Tommy John surgery in mid-May, made 25 throws from a distance of 30 feet. It's just the first step in a long process, which will likely keep him sidelined until around midseason in 2015.
Oct 1 - 2:15 PM

Michael Wacha will pitch out of the Cardinals' bullpen during the NLDS against the Dodgers.

It's hard to disagree with this decision, as Wacha didn't show enough in September to secure a spot in the NLDS rotation. Adam Wainwright will start Game 1 and will be followed by Lance Lynn, John Lackey, and (if necessary) Shelby Miller. Wacha dominated Los Angeles last October en route to winning NLCS MVP, but he dealt with a shoulder injury for much of this season.
Oct 1 - 2:06 PM

Lyle Overbay said on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM on Wednesday that he's "99.9 percent sure" that he'll retire.

Overbay appeared in 121 games with the Brewers this season while batting just .233/.328/.333 with four home runs and 28 RBI. Assuming he's done, the 37-year-old will finish his career with a .266 batting average to go along with 1,355 hits, 151 home runs and 675 RBI over 14 seasons.
Oct 1 - 12:11 PM

Ben Revere underwent right ankle surgery this week.

Revere had screws removed from the ankle and will be in a boot for two weeks. However, he should be fine by the time spring training rolls around. The 26-year-old outfielder batted .306/.325/.361 over 151 games this season while finishing fourth in the majors with 49 steals.
