Reds recalled RHP Pedro Villarreal from Double-A Pensacola.

Villarreal was added to the 40-man roster last November and posted a 4.36 ERA and 107/38 K/BB ratio in 148 2/3 innings over 26 starts this year between Double- and Triple-A. He'll likely be used as a long man or middle reliever during his first stint in the big leagues.

Dustin Pedroia (knee) will play in two more rehab games with Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday and Wednesday before being re-evaluated.

It's possible he'll be activated after that for the beginning of the Red Sox' six-game homestand on Friday. Pedroia has just one hit in eight at-bats in his first three rehab games for the PawSox but has drawn a couple walks. The important thing, of course, is how his surgically-repaired left knee feels, and all indications are that he feels good.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Monday that Ryan Zimmerman (oblique) might be ready "fairly soon."

Zimmerman will need a short rehab assignment first, but it sounds like that might be imminent. The veteran first baseman has been sidelined for nearly two weeks with a strained right oblique. Zimmerman's fill-in, Matt Adams, has really cooled off of late after a hot start.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Monday that Adrian Beltre (hamstring) is making progress but is still a few weeks away from a return.

Beltre has been on the disabled list twice this season with left hamstring issues, with the latest setback coming a week ago. The veteran third baseman has been a quick healer during his career, but given that he's 39 and has had an injury and then aggravation, it's not a surprise that he'll be out a while longer.
May 21 - 4:43 PM

Jerad Eickhoff (lat) felt a twinge in the tips of his right middle and index fingers when throwing curveballs during his latest rehab start.

Eickhoff has been out all season with a strained lat but now has a new ailment to deal with. He's being re-evaluated before the Phillies determine what his next step is. With Eickhoff likely out for a while longer, it gives Zach Eflin and Vince Velasquez more leash in the rotation.

Brewers optioned RHP Freddy Peralta to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

He'll head back down to the minors with Chase Anderson (illness) ready to return. What a difference a week makes. Peralta had an amazing major league debut against the Rockies on May 13, but he walked six batters while allowing four runs over four innings Saturday against the Twins. The 21-year-old has never been a great control pitcher in the minors, so it's not a bad thing for him to go back down for some more seasoning.
May 21 - 3:38 PM

Brewers activated RHP Chase Anderson from the 10-day disabled list.

Anderson landed on the disabled list last weekend after coming down with a nasty case of food poisoning, but he's doing better now and will make his return Monday against the Diamondbacks. He returns to a 3.97 ERA and 30/16 K/BB ratio in 45 1/3 innings.
May 21 - 3:35 PM

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said during an appearance on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM on Monday that Khris Davis (groin) will likely be placed on the disabled list.

Davis left Sunday's game with a right groin strain. He was scheduled to be reevaluated Monday, but Melvin said that he "can't imagine" he won't end up on the disabled list based on how he was moving around. It's not exactly unexpected given how these injuries usually go. Mark Canha and Chad Pinder figure to see an uptick in playing time while Davis is sidelined, but the A's and fantasy owners are going to miss his big bat.
May 21 - 2:53 PM

Juan Soto will start in left field and bat sixth Monday against the Padres.

Soto struck out in his first major league at-bat Sunday, but this will his first MLB start. The Nationals are dealing with multiple injuries in their outfield, so they made the bold move of promoting the 19-year-old despite appearing in just eight games above High-A. They think he's equal to the task. It should be interesting, at the very least, but Soto is worth a pickup in most fantasy leagues on upside alone.

Major League Baseball has extended the administrative leave for Roberto Osuna for another week through May 28.

It's the second extension for administrative leave since Osuna's arrest for assault on May 8. He still has a court date scheduled for June 18, so it's unclear when he might pitch for the Blue Jays again. He could face a possible suspension from MLB even if he isn't ultimately convicted. Tyler Clippard has the lone save for Toronto since Osuna's arrest.

Lance McCullers was dominant in Sunday's victory over the Indians, allowing just one hit and a pair of walks over seven shutout innings.

McCullers racked up eight strikeouts on the night. The right-hander retired the first 15 hitters that he faced until Jason Kipnis lined a single into right field to lead off the sixth inning. With the victory, McCullers improves to 6-2 on the season to go along with a 3.20 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 66/23 K/BB ratio across 59 innings. He'll look to replicate this fine effort on Saturday in a rematch against these same Indians in Cleveland.
May 20 - 11:00 PM

Mitch Haniger hit a two-run, game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Mariners bested the Tigers 3-2 in 11 innings Sunday.

Tigers starter Francisco Liriano blanked the M's for eight innings before handing it off to closer Shane Greene, who allowed a one-out single before Haniger stepped to the dish. Haniger proceeded to crush a hanging breaking ball from Greene, giving him 11 dongs and 36 RBI on the year. The 27-year-old is hitting .298/.379/.571 through 46 games this year.
