Mariners recalled INF Alex Liddi from Triple-A Tacoma.

Liddi posted a pedestrian .231 average and .655 OPS across 114 plate appearances earlier this season with the Mariners. The 24-year-old won't get much playing time.

Red Sox, David Ortiz discussing extension

Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox and David Ortiz are having discussions Friday about extending the designated hitter's contract through 2015.

Ortiz will be paid $15 million next season before hitting free agency, but the Red Sox want to make sure he never hits the open market. The veteran DH turned 38 last month, but he appears to have more left in the tank after batting .309/.395/.564 with 30 homers and 103 in 2013 before winning the World Series MVP.

Braves ink Mat Gamel to minor league deal

Braves signed INF Mat Gamel to a minor league contract.

The deal presumably contains an invitation to spring training. Gamel is coming back from a pair of ACL tears but is expected to be healthy for spring training. It's a bit of an odd landing spot for him, as he has no chance to win a starting job. Gamel, 28, is a career .229/.305/.367 hitter but potentially could be a nice bench bat for the Braves.

Twins bring back outfielder Jason Kubel

Twins signed OF/DH Jason Kubel to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman was the first to report the deal, and Darren Wolfson of 1500ESPN.com was the first to say it was a minor league pact. Kubel slugged 30 homers for the D'Backs in 2012 but fell off the map last season, batting just .216/.293/.317 with five homers over 97 contests. He'll see plenty of starts at the corner outfield spots and at DH. Kubel, of course, was drafted by the Twins and spent his first seven big league seasons in Minnesota.

Hudson re-signs with D'Backs on minors deal

Diamondbacks re-signed RHP Daniel Hudson to a minor league contract.

The terms of the deal are not yet known. Hudson doesn't get the major league contract he was wanting, but he'll get to remain in the same organization as he rehabs from a second Tommy John surgery. The right-hander could possibly make it back during the second half, but nothing much should be expected from him until 2015.

Rockies get Logan for three years, $16.5M

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Rockies will sign Boone Logan to a three-year, $16.5 million contract.

Josh Outman has been great the last two seasons versus lefties, so it's puzzling as to why the Rockies felt the need to give a lefty specialist $5.5 million per season. Logan has posted a 3.38 ERA with 202 strikeouts across 176 innings over the last four seasons for the Yankees, so he'll certainly help. It just doesn't seem like a great way for Colorado to spend their money. Logan is coming off arthroscopic elbow surgery but will be 100 percent for spring training.

D'Backs close to re-signing Daniel Hudson

The Diamondbacks are close to re-signing Daniel Hudson.

Hudson was non-tendered by the D'Backs earlier this month, but it sounds like he'll stick around. The righty will miss most, if not all, of 2014 while recovering from his second Tommy John surgery but could wind up being a bargain if he eventually returns healthy. The sticking point in negotiations had been that Hudson wanted a spot on the 40-man roster.

Mets could wind up pursuing Kendrys Morales

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that a "good team-friendly deal" could develop between the Mets and Kendrys Morales in February or March.

The Mets are trying to trade Ike Davis in order to free up first base for Lucas Duda, but if Morales winds up being available cheaply, they could move Duda back to the outfield or try to deal him, as well. Morales is more appealing to a team like the Mets because their top-10 draft pick is protected. Of course, it's debatable how much of an upgrade he'd really be over Duda.

Phils 'extremely motivated' to deal Papelbon

ESPN's Buster Olney has been told by teams that have talked to the Phillies that they're "extremely motivated" to trade Jonathan Papelbon.

The problem, of course, is that Papelbon isn't as good as he used to be and will be owed $39 million over the next three seasons if his 2016 option vests. There have also been reports that Papelbon has clashed with his teammates in Philly, and with his no-trade clause he's only able to be dealt to 12 approved teams. If the Phillies are able to trade him, it would have to be a straight salary dump and even then they still might have to eat some money.

Royals, Blue Jays have talked Butler trade

Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail reports that the Blue Jays have discussed a trade with the Royals involving Billy Butler.

Blair says Toronto would receive "prospects plus Butler," but the talks haven't "moved beyond the discussion stage." It's not clear what Kansas City would receive in the deal. With Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind already on the roster as first base/DH options, the Blue Jays seem likely to trade for Butler only if they can also deal Lind.

Padres the favorites to land Joaquin Benoit

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Padres are the "front runner" over the Indians to sign Joaquin Benoit.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports has reported that both teams have offered a two-year, $14 million deal. Benoit would seem to have a better chance of closing with the Indians than the Padres, but he must just like the San Diego weather better. The veteran reliever put up a 2.01 ERA and 73/22 K/BB ratio over 67 innings with the Tigers in 2013.

Reds 'quite interested' in FA 2B Omar Infante

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Reds are "quite interested" in free agent Omar Infante.

But a Brandon Phillips trade would have to happen first and the Reds haven't made much progress on that front. Infante is also drawing serious interest from the Yankees and Royals, and is said to be seeking a four-year contract worth around $40 million. The 31-year-old second baseman hit .318/.345/.450 with 10 home runs and 51 RBI in 118 games this past season for the Tigers.
