Lorenzo Cain said Friday that he's done for the remainder of the season.

He called it a very tough year, but vowed to rehab over the Winter in preparation for a strong 2013. He finishes the year with a .266/.316/.419 line with seven homers, 31 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 222 at-bats. Assuming he's fully healthy, he should return as the Royals starting center fielder next season.

Tigers released RHP Francisco Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was removed from the closer role in early May and hasn't been any better in a less demanding job, ultimately posting a 7.82 ERA over 28 appearances this season. The 35-year-old was pretty good for the Tigers in 2016 and shouldn't be out of a job long, but it's certainly possible that his days as an effective reliever are over.

Dexter Fowler (quad) is not in the Cardinals' lineup Friday.

Fowler was initially out of the lineup, then in the lineup and now out of the lineup again. For what it's worth, he expects to return to action Saturday. Tommy Pham is in center field and Jose Martinez is in left.
Jun 23 - 4:53 PM

Brandon Finnegan (trapezius) could rejoin the Reds' rotation on Monday in St. Louis.

Finnegan has posted a 3.00 ERA and 10/3 K/BB ratio over 12 innings across three rehab starts. He's be relatively limited from a pitch count perspective Monday but is probably built up enough at this point to give it a go. Finnegan has been sidelined since mid-April due to a strained left trapezius muscle.

Freddie Freeman (wrist) is hoping to begin a rehab assignment in 7-10 days.

That's after the end of the Braves' road trip. Freeman was cleared to begin taking dry swings on Friday and will continue a hitting progression over the next few days. The slugger said earlier this week that he was hoping to return prior to the All-Star break, and it looks like he'll have a chance to do just that. Freeman has been working out at third base and could be used at the position upon activation as the Braves look for a way to keep Matt Adams' bat in the lineup.
Jun 23 - 4:48 PM

Jacoby Ellsbury has passed his concussion protocol testing and will be sent out on a rehab assignment soon.

Ellsbury has missed the last month of action with concussion symptoms following a collision with the outfield wall, but he's finally turned a corner. What role he'll have upon activation is up in the air, as Yankees manager Joe Girardi has committed to Aaron Hicks in center field.
Jun 23 - 4:42 PM

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the "perception of some involved" in Adeiny Hechavarria trade talks is that the Rays have "created some traction."

The Marlins appear eager to dump Hechavarria and his $4.35 million contract and a deal is expected to go down sometime over the weekend. The Orioles and Cardinals have reportedly been interested in addition to the Rays, but it appears Tampa Bay has inched ahead. Tim Beckham can move to second base to clear a starting spot for the slick-fielding Hechavarria.
Jun 23 - 4:40 PM

Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) could begin a rehab assignment as soon as June 29.

Rodriguez will face hitters on Saturday and should be cleared to make a rehab start five days after that if all goes well. The left-hander has been out nearly all month with a recurring knee issue, but the hope is that he'll be ready to rejoin the Red Sox' rotation by the All-Star break.
Jun 23 - 4:33 PM

Red Sox signed INF Jhonny Peralta to a minor league contract.

It's a good landing spot for Peralta, as the Red Sox have been desperate for a contribution from their third basemen this season. Of course, he's no guarantee to be an improvement given his .251/.299/.376 line since the beginning of last season. Still, the 35-year-old is worth a shot on a minor league deal. He'll report to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.
Jun 23 - 4:29 PM

Matt Kemp (hamstring) is not in the Braves' lineup Friday.

Kemp exited Thursday's game with a tight left hamstring. It's been a recurring issue for him this season. Danny Santana is in left field.
Jun 23 - 4:26 PM

Matt Duffy had surgery this week to remove a calcium deposit from his ailing left Achilles.

The Rays think it's what had been causing the pain in Duffy's heel and causing multiple setbacks. If that proves to be the case, he'll be back sometime this season. However, there's still no timetable for his return.
Jun 23 - 4:24 PM

Freddie Freeman (wrist) has been cleared to take dry swings.

Freeman was given the go-ahead after having a follow-up CT scan Friday. It's the first step in a hitting progression for him that's going to take a while, but the slugger hopes to return around the All-Star break. Freeman has been working out at third base, as he could switch positions so Matt Adams can stay at first base.
