Jose Altuve left Sunday's game against the Pirates with groin tightness.

Altuve is expected to miss at least Monday's game against the Cardinals. The diminutive second baseman walked and stole a base Sunday before exiting and is now batting .291 with five homers and 33 steals this season.

Brett Lawrie hit a solo home run in Sunday's 7-1 win over the Orioles, the third consecutive game in which he has gone deep.

Lawrie smacked a solo home run off the soon-to-be-demolished Ubaldo Jimenez in the fourth inning. The tater was his fourth of the season. Three of the four dingers came in this weekend's series against the Orioles. In addition to that quartet of blasts, he has driven in 10 runs, scored 15 and hit to a triple-slash of .290/.377/.505. The 26-year-old second baseman has a chance to surpass the career-best 16 homers he launched in 2015.
May 1 - 5:08 PM

Chris Sale lacked his usual pinpoint control in Sunday's 7-1 win over the Orioles, walking four while allowing one run over 5 1/3 innings.

Sale limited the damage on the scoreboard, but the four walks were wildly out of character for him. In his previous five starts combined (38 innings), he had handed out just five free passes. On the non-walk side of the equation, the ace southpaw scattered five hits while striking out six. Even a shaky Chris Sale start is not without its rewards. For the season, he holds a 1.66 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 38/9 K/BB ratio. After surrendering six runs over his first two starts, he has yielded just three (two earned) over his last four outings. A home showdown with the Twins shows next on his schedule.
May 1 - 4:56 PM

Angel Pagan is listed as day-to-day after leaving Sunday's game against the Mets with a mild hamstring strain.

He's expected to miss at least the next 2-to-3 days. Pagan suffered the injury while trying to stretch a single into a double during the seventh inning of Sunday's contest. Look for Gregor Blanco to see additional playing time in his absence.
May 1 - 4:50 PM

Madison Bumgarner fired six shutout innings in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Mets.

Nice work by Bumgarner, who scattered six hits, struck out seven and walked three over the course of his time on the mound. While he has pitched inconsistently in places through his first six starts, Mad-Bum still holds a 3.03 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 45/13 K/BB ratio. If he can move that WHIP closer to his career mark of 1.12, it would almost certainly help to ease some of the ups and downs he has experienced thus far. A home start against the Rockies shows next on his schedule.
May 1 - 4:47 PM

Troy Tulowitzki went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Rays.

Edwin Encarnacion's RBI ground out in the eighth inning snapped a 1-1 tie, but it was Tulowitzki who truly salted the game away. His three-run homer off reliever Alex Colome later in the frame took the edge off what had been a tense pitcher's duel between Marcus Stroman and Jake Odorizzi. While Sunday's three-run dinger was nice, we are still waiting for Tulo to lock into any sort of a consistent groove. His .172/.291/.356 slugging percentage is troubling for obvious reasons, but he makes for a prime buy-low candidate if owners are beginning to grow skittish.
May 1 - 4:10 PM

Marcus Stroman was superb in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Rays, yielding one run on three hits over eight innings.

Well, that's one way to celebrate a birthday. Stroman turned 25 on Sunday and with the win, the birthday boy improved to 4-0 on the young season. He struck out nine against two walks, throwing 103 pitches (65 strikes) over the course of his eight innings of work. Only an Evan Longoria solo home run in the sixth inning prevented him from the shutout. With the superlative outing under his belt, Stroman will take a 3.77 ERA and 0.95 WHIP into his next scheduled start. That one will come against the Dodgers.
May 1 - 3:54 PM

Jake Odorizzi was sharp in earning a no-decision in Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Blue Jays, hurling seven innings of one-run ball.

Don't be fooled by the 5-1 final score. This was a juicy pitching duel by starters Odorizzi and Marcus Stroman until the Rays bullpen coughed up four late runs. For his part, Odorizzi struck out six, walked two and allowed just a pair of hits. The lonely run to score on his watch came when Josh Donaldson clocked a solo homer off the 26-year-old right-hander in the fourth inning. Odorizzi is off to a smooth start with a 3.12 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 30/7 K/BB ratio across 34 2/3 innings. A road date with the Angels awaits him in his next outing.
May 1 - 3:52 PM

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Sunday that Andrew McCutchen's left knee "just felt a little cranky" on Saturday.

McCutchen is back in the lineup Sunday, so it doesn't appear this is something to worry about at the moment. However, keep in mind that he dealt with a knee issue early last season, as well, so it's certainly an item that needs to be filed away. McCutchen entered play Sunday batting just .226/.339/.441 on the season.
May 1 - 3:39 PM

J.J. Hardy departed Sunday's game against the White Sox after fouling a ball off his left foot.

It's unclear whether Hardy will undergo an X-ray or whether his exit was purely precautionary. The Orioles should have an update on their shortstop's status later Sunday.
May 1 - 3:30 PM

Josh Hamilton has been pulled off his rehab assignment after feeling soreness in his surgically-repaired left knee during his first rehab game Saturday.

Sadly, this comes as no surprise. Hamilton has been given a cortisone shot and the Rangers aren't ruling out him resuming his rehab assignment later this week, but that obviously isn't a given to happen. Hamilton had been expected back in mid-May, but that surely won't happen now.
May 1 - 3:16 PM

Scott Van Slyke (back) is not expected to return before June.

Van Slyke has been out for three weeks with a lower back injury and still hasn't been cleared to resume baseball activities. The 29-year-old has been a weapon for the Dodgers against left-handed pitching the last few seasons, so his absence for what looks like will be at least a couple months is notable.
