Max Scherzer twisted his right ankle during the Tigers' on-field celebration Monday night.

It's not a serious injury, but Scherzer has been ruled out for Wednesday's season finale against the Royals as a precautionary measure. He'll be saved for the ALDS.

Dustin Pedroia will be away from the Red Sox on Sunday due to a family matter.

The Red Sox will not make a roster move, and it's possible, although not a given, that Pedroia will rejoin the club on Monday. It's unfortunate timing, as Pedroia is red-hot at the plate with 11 hits in his last 12 at-bats. The Red Sox are playing the Sunday night game and haven't released a lineup yet, so it's unclear who will be filling in for Pedroia at second base. Aaron Hill, Brock Holt and Marco Hernandez are the options.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Sunday that Adam Jones (hamstring) is "close" to returning to the lineup.

Showalter speculated that if they were playing a night game rather than a day game Sunday that Jones would be in the lineup. The outfielder has been in and out of action since suffering a hamstring injury Thursday but should be available off the bench Sunday and back in the lineup Monday.

Wil Myers was scratched from the Padres' lineup Sunday with a stomach virus.

He should be OK in a day or two. Yangervis Solarte will slide across the diamond to cover for Myers, with Adam Rosales entering the lineup at third base.

Junior Guerra (elbow) is on track to rejoin the Brewers' rotation next weekend in Pittsburgh.

Guerra threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Colorado Springs on Saturday. He'll be examined by the Brewers' medical staff before officially being cleared to rejoin the rotation later this week, assuming all is well. Guerra holds a 2.93 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 107 1/3 innings this season and should be scooped up in fantasy leagues where he was dropped.

Alex Cobb (elbow) will rejoin the Rays' rotation on Friday or Saturday against the Blue Jays.

Cobb has completed his rehab from Tommy John surgery, although his rehab assignment did not go smoothly. The right-hander posted a 6.65 ERA over eight starts and had to be shut down for a while last month due to arm fatigue. Fantasy owners would be wise to give him a start or two to see how he looks before considering activating him.

Lance McCullers (elbow) resumed a throwing program on Friday.

He played catch Friday and said he felt fine the day after on Saturday. Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Saturday that it will be a while before McCullers can throw aggressively on flat ground or off a mound, so his return isn't imminent. Still, it's a nice step.

Neil Walker (back) is not in the Mets' lineup Sunday.

Walker has had a minor setback with the back injury that kept him out for four games earlier this month. The hope is that he'll be fine after one day of rest. Kelly Johnson is filling in at second base.

Yoenis Cespedes (quad) is not in the Mets' lineup Sunday.

Cespedes had a minor flare-up Saturday with the quad injury he just returned from. The feeling right now is that it's likely to be just a one-day absence, but we'll have to wait and see how Cespedes recovers. The Mets have Curtis Granderson in left field and Alejandro De Aza in center Sunday.

Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports that Gerrit Cole's elbow injury could be a bone spur issue.

The good news is that an MRI didn't reveal any ligament damage, according to Biertempfel. Cole will receive a second opinion on his elbow from orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Sunday. The righty has posted a 7.06 ERA over his last four starts, so it's possible the elbow has been bothering him for a while. Steven Brault will fill in for Cole on Monday versus the Cubs. It's unclear at this point how much time Cole might miss, although more should be known after Sunday's exam.

John Lackey (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session on Monday at Wrigley Field.

It will be his first time throwing off the bump since he suffered a right shoulder strain in his August 14 outing. Lackey will not be ready for his next turn on Wednesday, which means Mike Montgomery will get another start. It's unclear what the next step will be for Lackey after Monday.

Michael Foltynewicz limited the Giants to one run in 7 2/3 innings as the Braves won 3-1 on Saturday.

He struck out six while yielding only five hits and one base-on-balls in the excellent outing. His one mistake came on a solo shot by Brandon Crawford. Foltynewicz was fortunate to be facing a Giants lineup missing Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, Hunter Pence and Eduardo Nunez but looked great nonetheless. He is now 7-5 with a 4.30 ERA and 89 punchouts in 102 2/3 innings. The hard-throwing right-hander has solidified himself as a major league starting pitcher and hushed those who said he would be better off in the bullpen.
