According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Red Sox intend to fire Bobby Valentine when the season ends.

The move will be made on either Thursday or Friday, says Heyman's source. Valentine failed miserably in his first season as Red Sox skipper, going 7-21 so far in September and 69-92 overall while regularly stirring up drama inside the Boston clubhouse. The Red Sox are thought to have their eyes on current Blue Jays manager John Farrell as a potential replacement.

Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Rougned Odor was "out late" with teammate Yohander Mendez on Monday night in Kansas City.

That might help explain why Odor was scratched from the Rangers' starting lineup on Tuesday night, as Yohander Mendez got demoted to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday afternoon for what was called a "violation of team rules." Stevenson writes that "the night on the town got out of hand for Mendez," though there are no other details available at this time. Jurickson Profar is starting at second base Tuesday over Odor, who holds a disappointing .217/.292/.309 batting line with just one home run and one stolen base in 45 games this year. Perhaps he too should be sent to the minor leagues.

Hunter Strickland broke his right (pitching) hand when he punched a door after leaving Monday's game against the Marlins.

Strickland had just blown a save versus Miami, yielding three runs on three hits and two walks, but he made an ugly night even uglier. The 29-year-old right-hander will undergo surgery and is expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks. Giants manager Bruce Bochy mentioned Tony Watson and Sam Dyson as possible fill-ins at closer during a chat with the media on Tuesday. Watson, who holds a stingy 1.87 ERA and 40/6 K/BB ratio in 33 2/3 innings this season, would be our pick right now. Mark Melancon could eventually work his way into the mix too.
Jun 19 - 7:33 PM

Jose Altuve is out of the Astros' starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Rays.

It looks to be a routine day of rest for the star second baseman, who went 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and two runs scored in Monday's series opener versus Tampa Bay. Alex Bregman is at second base and Yuli Gurriel is playing third base on Tuesday, with Tyler White drawing a start at first base.
Jun 19 - 6:02 PM

Javier Baez (elbow) is starting at second base and batting second in the nightcap of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers.

Baez was a late sub into the early game, so it's no surprise that he is back in the starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Dodgers and left-hander Rich Hill. Baez took a pitch off his left elbow Sunday in the Cubs' series finale at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, but only suffered some minor bruising and swelling.

Rangers optioned RHP Yohander Mendez to Triple-A Round Rock.

Rangers GM Jon Daniels told reporters on a conference call Tuesday that Mendez violated team rules and that this demotion will serve as his punishment. Daniels noted that other players were involved to a lesser degree, but he wouldn't get into any specifics, only noting that it's not something that would need to involve the police or MLB's commissioner's office. Austin Bibens-Dirkx will take Mendez's spot in the Rangers' rotation on Wednesday.

Mike Foltynewicz (triceps) is tentatively scheduled to come off the disabled list Sunday.

Atlanta is lining up Sean Newcomb and Julio Teheran to pitch the first two games of this weekend's series against the Orioles, and the hope is that Foltynewicz will be ready to pitch the finale on Sunday. The 26-year-old right-hander first has to make it through a couple more side sessions. He had a 2.16 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 94/33 K/BB ratio through 79 innings this season with the Braves when he landed on the disabled list June 16, retroactive to June 13, with right triceps tightness.
Jun 19 - 5:24 PM

Ronald Acuna (knee) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment "sooner than later."

Those are the words of Atlanta Journal Constitution beat writer David O'Brien, who notes that Acuna has gone through two days of intense workouts this week at the Braves' spring training complex in Florida. The 20-year-old future star has been on the disabled list since May 28 because of a mild ACL sprain in his left knee. He had a .779 OPS with five home runs and two stolen bases through his first 29 major league games.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Diamondbacks "have been in contact" with the Orioles about a possible Manny Machado trade.

Morosi notes, however, that "this is viewed as due diligence on Arizona’s part" for the time being. You can bet that just about every contending team will reach out to the O's about Machado, who's batting .310/.377/.567 with 18 home runs and 53 RBI in 69 games this season for a Baltimore team that will carry a 20-50 record into play Tuesday. The 25-year-old superstar is scheduled to become a free agent this winter.
Jun 19 - 5:15 PM

Brandon Morrow was unavailable Tuesday afternoon against the Dodgers due to back tightness.

And he also won't be available for the nightcap of Tuesday's doubleheader. Justin Wilson blew a save in Morrow's place in the early game as the Cubs fell 4-3. This doesn't sound like it will be a DL situation for Morrow, who boasts a 1.59 ERA and 16 saves this season.
Jun 19 - 5:10 PM

Kyle Farmer hit a pinch-hit go-ahead two-run double in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday as the Dodgers beat the Cubs 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Cubs closer Brandon Morrow was apparently unavailable for this one and the Dodgers took advantage of a weaker crop of relievers to earn a big comeback victory at Wrigley Field. Farmer hit the double off left-hander Justin Wilson, after Austin Barnes drew a leadoff walk and Justin Turner roped a one-out single.
Jun 19 - 4:59 PM

Mets placed OF Jay Bruce on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to June 18, with a hip injury.

Bruce had missed four of the Mets' last five games due to back and hip issues, and he'll now be sidelined for at least the next nine days. The 31-year-old outfielder has batted just .212/.292/.321 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 236 plate appearances this season for New York. He's in the first year of a three-year, $39 million free agent deal.
