Matt Kemp may need offseason shoulder surgery.

"We’re talking," head trainer Sue Falsone told reporters Wednesday. "We’ll make some decisions in the next 36 hours." Kemp has a torn labrum in his left shoulder that might be able to heal on its own with rest. If he undergoes surgery, it would merely be a clean-up.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) will throw around 45 pitches in a simulated game on Wednesday.

Ryu felt fine after his first full-effort bullpen session on Sunday and is ready to take the next step in his recovery from left shoulder irritation. The hope is that he'll be able to pitch at some point during the Dodgers' NLDS matchup with the Cardinals. He has been on the shelf since September 13.

Dee Gordon (hip) fully expects to play in Game 1 of the NLDS on Friday against the Cardinals.

Gordon missed the final game of the regular season with irritation in his right hip, but he went through a full workout on Tuesday afternoon and felt fine. The speedy second baseman batted .289/.326/.378 with 64 stolen bases in 148 games this summer.
Sep 30 - 4:06 PM

Matt Shoemaker (oblique) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday.

He'll take breaks to simulate multiple innings. Shoemaker hasn't pitched since September 16 with an oblique strain, but appears likely to start Game 3 of the ALDS.
Sep 30 - 3:31 PM

Russell Martin (hamstring) expects to start in Wednesday's Wild Card game against the Giants.

Martin left Friday's game after aggravating a left hamstring injury and sat out the rest of the weekend, but it's not going to stop him from playing in Wednesday's do-or-die affair. Still, the Pirates plan to carry three catchers for the game just in case.

Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox won't be one of the teams to conduct a private workout for Cuban slugger Yasmani Tomas.

Bradford hears that the Red Sox are intrigued by Tomas' power potential, but they are unlikely to make a strong bid for his services due to their outfield log jam and some concerns about his strikeout rate. Still, plenty of teams are in the mix for the 23-year-old corner outfielder, who is expected to command more than $100 million this winter. He has already had private workouts with the likes of the Phillies and Rangers and more are to come.

Sam Fuld will start in left field and bat second in Tuesday's Wild Card game against the Royals.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin has clearly prioritized defense in this one, though it's a little odd to see Fuld batting second. Coco Crisp will bat leadoff and play center field and will be followed by Fuld, Josh Donaldson 3B , Brandon Moss DH, Josh Reddick RF, Brett Lowrie SS, Stephen Vogt 1B, Geovany Soto C, and Eric Sogard 2B.
Sep 30 - 2:46 PM

Carlos Beltran underwent surgery Tuesday to remove loose pieces and a bone spur from his right elbow.

Beltran is six weeks away from hitting and throwing and 12 weeks away from playing in a game, so he should be ready for spring training. The 37-year-old attempted to play through the pain this season, but ended up with a career-low .703 OPS. Now that the issue has been taken care of, he'll make for a solid bounceback candidate in 2015.
Sep 30 - 2:36 PM

Adam Dunn is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's Wild Card game against the Royals.

Dunn is in the playoffs for the first time in his long career, but it looks like he'll be limited to pinch-hitter duty. The full lineup hasn't been announced yet, but Geovany Soto will catch Jon Lester while Brandon Moss will serve as DH and Sam Fuld will play left.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Yankees "have begun the process of constructing a new contract" for general manager Brian Cashman.

Cashman has been New York's general manager for the past 17 seasons and his current contract is set to expire at the end of the month. The Yankees missed the playoffs for the second straight year despite spending big money last winter, but Olney hears that Cashman's relationship with the organization and the Steinbrenners remains strong.
Sep 30 - 1:21 PM

Max Scherzer will start Game 1 of the ALDS against the Orioles on Thursday.

Scherzer, who went 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA during the regular season, will be opposed by Chris Tillman. Justin Verlander will start Game 2 for the Tigers while David Price will go in Game 3. Rick Porcello would start a potential Game 4.
Sep 30 - 12:50 PM

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Monday that he expects Alex Rodriguez to be the team's third baseman next season.

Girardi did note that A-Rod isn't guaranteed the starting job at the hot corner because the club needs "to see where he is physically at." But, the skipper "absolutely" expects Rodriguez to be part of the team and thinks he'll be the regular third baseman as long as he's healthy. A-Rod, of course, missed all of this season after being suspended because of his ties with Biogenesis. Some had speculated that the Yanks might simply just cut him loose, but it appears they're not willing to just eat the $61 million A-Rod has remaining on his contract.
