The Denver Post's Troy Renck reports that Rockies manager Jim Tracy has resigned.

Tracy was given an extension last offseason, but it only guaranteed his 2013 salary. The decision to part ways isn't shocking, as the Rockies had already reduced his control over the team and made it clear that changes would be made to his coaching staff. In his four-year tenure with Colorado, Tracy posted a 294-308 record. The Rox finished with a franchise-worst 64 wins this season.

Derek Holland pitched one of the best games of his career in Sunday's 6-0 win over the Orioles, striking out 11 and allowing just three hits in a complete game shutout.

Simply spectacular work by Holland. Adam Jones hit a double against the 28-year-old southpaw, but otherwise, he allowed almost nothing. Through three starts since returning from the disabled list, he's surrendered six runs in 21 1/3 innings. He'll try to match this effort when he carries his 2.82 ERA and 0.94 WHIP into a road date with the Angels next Saturday.

Stephen Drew went 4-for-4 with a homer and four RBI in the Yankees' 20-6 rout of the Braves on Sunday.

Drew singled and scored in the Yankees' three-run second inning, hit a two-run shot in the Yankees' four-run third inning, drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning, and then singled twice and scored another run in the Yankees' nine-run seventh. Drew bumped his batting average from .192 to .201 and his OPS from .632 to .659 in the big afternoon victory for the current American League Wild Card leaders.

Stephen Strasburg was forced to leave Sunday's start against the Rockies after four innings due to discomfort in his upper back.

It's similar to one of the many injury issues that the right-hander has dealt with this season. It's unclear at the moment how much time he may miss. He has been limited to a total of 91 innings in 18 starts this year.
Aug 30 - 5:32 PM

Ervin Santana brought some of his better stuff to the party in Sunday's 7-5 win over the Astros, tossing seven innings of shutout ball.

Santana struck out 10 and did not issue a free pass on the afternoon. The 10 strikeouts represented a season-high. He desperately needed a strong start like this. In his first four outings after returning from a PED suspension, he held a 2.60 ERA. That's jumped to 5.40 in the seven starts since. These same Astros will be the opponent next he toes the rubber, though the game will be in Houston for that affair.
Aug 30 - 5:24 PM

Wily Peralta flummoxed the Reds in Sunday's 4-1 win, hurling seven innings of one-run ball.

Peralta struck out six without walking a batter. Brayan Pena slapped an RBI single in the second inning to drive home the lone run to score on the 26-year-old right-hander's watch. Peralta has the talent to succeed and flashes it from time-to-time, as he did on Sunday, but a 4.30 ERA and 1.48 WHIP tell the tale of his season-long inconsistency. He'll head on the road for another showdown with the Reds in his next start.
Aug 30 - 4:59 PM

James Shields was effective in Sunday's win versus the Phillies, firing seven innings of one-run ball.

Shields allowed six hits and a walk while striking out eight. The only run came on a Cameron Rupp solo home run in the second inning. The right-hander picked up his 10th win with the effort, and now has a 3.78 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP and a 184/61 K/BB ratio in 171 1/3 innings. Shields will host the Dodgers in his next start.
Aug 30 - 4:54 PM

Brandon Guyer went 3-for-4 with a solo home run as the Rays took down the Royals on Sunday.

Guyer led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and later scored. He added a solo home run in the third inning to tie the game at two apiece. The outfielder has had a sneakily solid year for the Rays, batting .270/.372/.407 with six home runs, 24 RBI, 34 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases in 293 plate appearances.
Aug 30 - 4:27 PM

Michael Cuddyer's bat stayed hot, as he went 3-for-3 with three singles, a walk, and two runs scored to help the Mets top the Red Sox on Sunday.

Cuddyer led off the second inning with a single and later came around to score the first run of the ballgame. He walked and scored in the sixth, then added an RBI single in the seventh to break a 4-4 tie. Since returning from the disabled list, Cuddyer is batting .388 (19-for-49).
Aug 30 - 4:13 PM

Edwin Encarnacion extended his hitting streak to 25 games with a single and a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Tigers.

He was also hit by a pitch, reaching base in three of four plate appearances. The longball was Encarnacion's 30th of the season, giving him at least that many in four straight campaigns. The runaway train that is the Blue Jays offense launched four home runs on Sunday, with Josh Donaldson, Kevin Pillar and Russell Martin joining Encarnacion.
Aug 30 - 4:12 PM

Abraham Almonte smacked a grand slam as part of a 2-for-4 effort in Sunday's win against the Angels.

Almonte sent the Indians' lead to 6-0 when he cleared the bases with a grand slam to right-center off of Jered Weaver in the fifth inning. His bat had cooled off considerably following his first week with the Angels after coming over from the Padres in early August, but he still has a .270/.321/.541 batting line with his new team along with three home runs and 14 RBI in 81 plate appearances.
Aug 30 - 3:55 PM

A.J. Burnett (elbow) is hoping to rejoin the Pirates' rotation during the September 15-17 series against the Cubs.

Burnett was thrilled with how a 70-pitch simulated game went on Sunday, saying there's "no comparison" to how he feels now and how he did when he injured his elbow in July. He will not go out on a rehab assignment before returning. J.A. Happ has pitched well in Burnett's place, posting a 1.98 ERA over five starts.
