Andy Pettitte indicated to the New York Post this weekend that he intends to return for the 2013 season.

"I know one thing: I know the competition and the desire to compete is still there, and I don’t feel like I kind of got that itch out from the 70 innings or so that I threw this year," Pettitte said. "I was expecting to do a little bit more work than that." The veteran left-hander registered a cool 2.87 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 12 starts during the regular season. He will turn 41 years old next June.

Mets manager Terry Collins said that Jon Niese (knee) will undergo surgery.

Niese was lifted from Tuesday's game against the Cardinals after he felt a noticeable pain in his left knee. His upcoming surgery could well sideline him for the remainder of the 2016 season. Robert Gsellman will fill Niese's rotation spot moving forward. Prior to the injury, Niese held a 5.50 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 121 innings between the Pirates and Mets.

Ryan Braun slugged a pair of home runs Wednesday in the Brewers' 7-1 rout of the Rockies.

That concludes a three-game sweep for the Brewers. Braun hit a solo shot off Rockies starter Tyler Anderson in the bottom of the fourth inning and then added a two-run bomb off Chad Qualls in the bottom of the seventh. He finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored and is now slashing .317/.380/.562 with 24 home runs, 74 RBI, 13 stolen bases, and 66 runs scored in 105 games this season. Pretty good stuff from the 32-year-old outfielder.

Carlos Gomez is set to join the Rangers on Thursday.

No surprise here, as manager Jeff Banister said on Tuesday that this was a strong possibility. Gomez was signed to a minor league contract by the Rangers earlier this month after the Astros released him. The versatile-when-right outfielder has been playing at Triple-A Round Rock in preparation for his return to major league play. He's doubtful to carry significant fantasy value down the stretch after batting .210/.272/.322 over 323 plate appearances this year for Houston.

Alex Bregman hit another double Wednesday in the Astros' 5-4 defeat of the Pirates.

That's the ninth double and 13th extra-base hit in the last 18 games for Bregman, who is having a big August after struggling out of the gate following his July 25 promotion to the major leagues. The 22-year-old top prospect looks like a must-own in standard leagues for the stretch run. He had a .469 OPS nine days ago. It's now up to 694.

Devon Travis (finger) remains out of the Blue Jays' starting lineup on Wednesday night.

Travis received a cortisone injection Tuesday for an issue with the third knuckle on his right hand. It's not clear when he might return. Darwin Barney is starting at second base and batting leadoff on Wednesday versus Angels right-hander Matt Shoemaker.

RotoGrinders.com Daily Slant: Matt Shoemaker has been a much different pitcher on the road (4.71 xFIP on the road, 3.17 at home), allowing HRs to RH bats at a high rate (2.73 HR/9) while also allowing more hard contact to lefties. This is a sneakier than usual spot to stack up the Jays, with the RH power bats being the best upside targets. Darwin Barney is a suitable punt play that can make rostering guys like Donaldson and Encarnacion much easier while also giving you exposure to the top of a potent lineup.

Hanley Ramirez is getting a day off Wednesday.

Travis Shaw will start at first base and Brock Holt will start at third base versus Rays right-hander Matt Andriese. Hanley will be available off the bench.
Aug 24 - 3:20 PM

Marcell Ozuna is in the Marlins' starting lineup on Wednesday night against the Royals.

Ozuna made an early exit from Tuesday's game because of a private family emergency. He is starting in center field and batting cleanup Wednesday at home versus Kansas City right-hander Dillon Gee.

Yoenis Cespedes reiterated Tuesday that he does not plan to exercise his opt-out this winter.

We'll believe that when it becomes official. Cespedes is batting .295/.365/.570 with 25 home runs and 64 RBI in 98 games this year -- the first year of a three-year, $75 million deal with the Mets that includes an opt-out clause leading into 2017. His current .936 OPS would be the highest of his career by a pretty wide margin. The 30-year-old outfielder stands to cash in this winter in a weak free agent market and we expect him to do just that. He could still return to the Mets, but with a bigger contract guarantee.

Zack Cozart (knee, heel) remains out Wednesday.

Cozart has now missed a full week due to soreness in his right knee and Achilles. The hot-hitting Jose Peraza will get another start at shortstop versus the Rangers.

Hector Rondon (triceps) reported feeling good after playing catch on Wednesday.

It was his first time throwing since he landed on the disabled list August 19, retroactive to August 17, with a right triceps strain. Rondon plans to throw on flat ground again in a couple days before possibly beginning mound work. There is no exact timetable for his return, but early-to-mid September seems about right at this point.

Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski reiterated Wednesday morning that the team is still waiting on a decision from free agent Jonathan Papelbon.

Dombrowski and Co. reached out to Papelbon last week after he was released by the Nationals, but there has been no movement toward a contract agreement. "We did express some interest, but he has to decide what he wants to do," Dombrowski told MLB Network Radio. "We are open, we did call, he has to decide." Papelbon had a 4.37 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 35 innings this season with Washington.
