The Braves made a one-year, $13.3 million qualifying offer to impending free agent Michael Bourn.

Not unexpected, as Bourn is reportedly seeking a contract in the range of $80-100 million on the open market. The speedy center fielder is expected to decline, which will set the Braves up for a compensatory draft pick if he signs elsewhere. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported Friday that the Nationals are viewed as the early favorites to land him.

Jacoby Ellsbury finished 4-for-6 with two RBI, including the game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning, as the Yankees beat out the Royals 5-4 on Tuesday.

Ellsbury had an RBI double in the second inning, and his based-loaded single in the 10th gave the Yankees a lead they wouldn't cough up again. The 32-year-old has strung together a few decent games in the past week or so, going 9-for-27 with a homer, five RBI and seven runs scored in his last six contests. He's hitting .267/.328/.373 with six homers, 45 RBI, 57 runs scored and 18 stolen bases overall.

C.J. Cron rocked a pair of home runs and finished with three RBI in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Reds.

Cron burned Reds starter Tim Adleman twice on Tuesday, mashing a two-run home run in the first inning and a solo tater in the third. He also homered in the series-opener on Monday and has now launched 14 on the season. In addition, the 26-year-old first baseman is slashing .288/.337/.498. He has picked up eight hits in his last 12 at-bats. Five of those have gone for extra bases.

Denard Span left Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks due to a stiff neck.

Span saw three at-bats before Gorkys Hernandez took over in center for the veteran outfielder midway through the game. He should be considered day-to-day moving forward. The Giants will reevaluate him on Wednesday.

Rougned Odor hit a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday to give the Rangers an 8-7 win over the Mariners.

Odor finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, but it was his last hit that loomed the largest. After a leadoff single by Adrian Beltre, Odor drove a low offering from Edwin Diaz to straightaway center to give the Rangers the come-from-behind victory. Odor has 25 homers and 67 RBI this year, and he's hitting .272/.294/.491 overall.
Aug 31 - 12:54 AM

Jedd Gyorko swatted his 24th home run of the season Tuesday, and the Cardinals edged the Brewers 2-1 in 10 innings.

Gyorko's homer, a solo job, came in the sixth inning to give the Cardinals a fleeting lead. He's now homered in back to back games and four of his last six. The power isn't new -- he hit 23 homers in his rookie season with the Padres in 2013 -- but it is a bit unexpected after Gyorko combined to hit just 26 dingers over his previous two seasons. The 27-year-old has a month left to continue to build on what's already a single-season best for his career.
Aug 31 - 12:09 AM

Wily Peralta struck out 10 Cardinals hitters over seven innings of one-run ball Tuesday.

Peralta gave up a solo homer to Jedd Gyorko, something every National League starter has sworn to do this year, but he was otherwise stellar in a no-decision. Stellar is also a word that could describe Peralta's performance in general since being recalled in early August. In five starts, the 27-year-old has a 3.00 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 30 innings of work. The brilliance came basically out of nowhere, and there's no guarantee he'll keep it up -- this is a guy who had a 6.68 ERA in June -- but adventurous owners could do worse than Peralta right now. A start against the Cubs on Monday could shed some light on just how real this renaissance is.

James Paxton (finger) expects to take his next turn in the Mariners' rotation.

Paxton tore the nail off his left middle finger in the third inning of his start Tuesday night against the Rangers. He pitched two more innings after that but was limited to fastballs and curves. The lefty tore the same nail last September and had to be shut down early, though he really only missed one start. Paxton holds a 3.83 ERA and 82/20 K/BB ratio in 91 2/3 innings this season for Seattle.

Collin McHugh spun six scoreless innings as the Astros defeated the A's 3-1 on Tuesday.

Needing a strong performance to reinforce his standing in the Astros rotation, McHugh delivered by holding the A's to four hits and a walk while striking out five. The good outing lowered his ERA to 4.80 through 27 starts, and the 29-year-old is now 9-10 overall. With Lance McCullers getting the go-ahead to begin ramping up his throwing, McHugh and his fellow starters will need to keep pitching well down the stretch to guarantee their spot in the rotation. His next chance will come Monday at the Indians.
Aug 30 - 11:47 PM

Ian Kinsler went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in Tuesday's win over the White Sox.

The White Sox jumped on the Tigers for three runs in the second inning, but Detroit out-scored them 8-1 the rest of the way. Kinsler had the biggest hand in it with a two-run homer in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth. The second baseman's 24 bombs are easily his highest total in the last five seasons.
Aug 30 - 11:45 PM

Tuesday night's game between the Rockies and Dodgers was postponed due to rain in Denver.

The game will be made up with a split doubleheader on Wednesday. Tyler Anderson was scheduled to pitch for the host Rockies on Tuesday night at Coors Field and it was supposed to be Rich Hill making his second start for the visiting Dodgers. Anderson will handle the early game for the Rockies on Wednesday and Hill is going to pitch the later game for Los Angeles.
Aug 30 - 11:16 PM

Kyle Hendricks tossed seven scoreless innings Tuesday as the Cubs shut out the Pirates 3-0.

Hendricks scattered three hits and a walk while striking out four, earning his 13th win of the season in the process. He also increased his lead in earned run average, with his 2.09 ERA best among all qualified pitchers. That's quite a feather in the cap of the 26-year-old, who was arguably the least-coveted Cubs starter, for fantasy purposes, coming into the season. Hendricks has certainly shaken that reputation, and he'll look to further his league lead when the Cubs face the Giants on Sunday.
