According to a baseball source, the Red Sox have expressed interest in signing free agent outfielder Torii Hunter.

It's rumored that David Ortiz, a longtime friend and former teammate of Hunter's, has been actively recruiting him to come to Boston. The 37-year-old outfielder is coming off a strong offensive season in which he hit .313/.365/.451 with 16 homers and 92 RBI, and is expected to be a hot commodity on the free agent market.

Johnny Cueto (elbow) will not be ready to start on Sunday against the Nationals as hoped.

It doesn't appear that Cueto has had another setback, but rather the Reds just want to give him some more time. They're hoping he'll be ready to take the ball sometime during the series with the Phillies that begins next Tuesday. Michael Lorenzen will start Sunday.

Steven Souza (wrist) is back in the Rays' lineup Friday.

Souza hasn't played since spraining his left wrist in a home plate collision on Sunday. He's really struggled of late with just four hits in his last 26 at-bats.

Astros placed RHP Scott Feldman on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 27, with a right knee meniscus tear.

It's not clear when he suffered the injury, but Feldman has already undergone surgery and will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks. Michael Feliz has taken Feldman's spot on the roster, but it's expected to be Brett Oberholtzer who enters the rotation in the righty's place.
May 29 - 3:12 PM

Phillies designated OF Grady Sizemore for assignment.

The Phils re-signed Sizemore to a $2 million contract over the winter after he was decent for them down the stretch last season, but he's hit just .245/.288/.296 with no homers in 39 games this season. He's at least managed to stay healthy for a while now, but the 32-year-old just doesn't look to have anything left in the tank.
May 29 - 2:29 PM

Brewers activated SS Jean Segura from the 15-day disabled list.

Segura fractured his right pinkie finger 15 days ago, but he didn't even need a rehab assignment and returns after missing the minimum amount of time. The speedy shortstop is batting .262/.306/.373 with two home runs and six stolen bases in 33 games this season.
May 29 - 2:23 PM

Lynn Henning of the Detroit News reports that Victor Martinez (knee) could be sidelined until after the All-Star break.

The Tigers haven't set a timetable for Martinez's return as he battles soreness in his surgically-repaired left knee, but Henning notes that it's "going to be a slow process." V-Mart has begun rehabbing the knee, but it appears it's going to be a long time before he's game-ready again.
May 29 - 2:07 PM

Diamondbacks purchased the contract of C Jarrod Saltalamacchia from Triple-A Reno.

Saltalamacchia hit two homers in nine games for Reno but batted just .188/.222/.375 overall. However, with Tuffy Gosewisch (knee) going on the disabled list the Snakes needed another body behind the plate. Salty should get the bulk of the starts while Gosewisch is out and his power makes him worth an add in two-catcher leagues.
May 29 - 1:56 PM

Devon Travis (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo on Friday.

He'll stay with Buffalo through the weekend before being activated on Monday, the first day he's eligible, if all goes well. Travis has been on the shelf since May 17 with inflammation in his left shoulder.
May 29 - 12:56 PM

Alex Rios (hand) will be activated from the disabled list on Saturday.

He had been slated for a return on Friday, but the Royals have decided to give him one more day. Rios has been on the shelf since mid-April with a fracture in his left hand. Paulo Orlando is getting another start in right field Friday but is expected to be sent down when Rios is activated.
May 29 - 12:47 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Johnny Cueto "is at least on (the Astros') radar."

It's possible they could ultimately shoot a little lower (Heyman says that they're also considering Aaron Harang), but it sounds like there's a good chance the Astros will add a starter before the deadline. One executive noted that potential trade talks between the Astros and Reds could get interesting given the icy relationship Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow and Cincinnati GM Walt Jocketty had when together in St. Louis. Cueto is currently dealing with an elbow issue, but he was cleared of structural damage and is expected to rejoin the rotation Sunday.
May 29 - 12:28 PM

Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) played catch again on Thursday.

Iwakuma was shut down for a while after having a setback with his strained right lat, but Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Thursday that "the discomfort and inflammation has dissipated to the point where he can get out and continue his rehab." The skipper added that he’d be "surprised" if Iwakuma were able to throw a bullpen session in the next 7-8 days, but it does appear progress is being made. "He feels real good," McClendon said, "and we’ll continue to progress with his rehab and see how that goes."
