Yankees claimed RHP David Herndon off waivers from the Blue Jays.

Toronto had claimed Herndon off waivers from the Phillies, but he was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Scott Maine. Herndon will remain sidelined until June as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. The 27-year-old right-hander owns a career 3.85 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 117 career innings at the big league level.

The Athletics will wait to see how Jesse Hahn (blister) does in his between-starts bullpen session before determining whether he'll be ready for his next outing.

Hahn tossed 5 1/3 scoreless frames Saturday before having to leave with a blister issue. He'll ultimately be fine, but it's possible the A's will skip him one time through the rotation in order to allow the blister to fully heal. Jesse Chavez, who threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings himself in relief of Hahn, would be in line for a spot start.

Justin Upton (quad) is not in the Padres' lineup Sunday.

Upton tweaked his quad in the ninth inning Saturday but remained in the game and even doubled in the 10th. He'll be fine but needs a day or two of rest. Will Venable is handling left field Sunday. The Padres are also going with Yangervis Solarte over Yonder Alonso at first base and Clint Barmes over Alexi Amarista at shortstop.
Apr 19 - 12:09 PM

Shane Victorino (ribs) is back in the Red Sox' lineup Sunday.

Victorino sat out Saturday with sore ribs after running into the wall Friday, but he says he's fine. The veteran outfielder is hitting just .125/.300/.125 in the early going this season.
Apr 19 - 11:08 AM

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus admitted Sunday that Victor Martinez (knee) is "certainly not 100 percent."

V-Mart is battling soreness in his left knee, although Ausmus revealed that the discomfort is in the top of the knee and not in the area the designated hitter had surgically-repaired. It's more of an issue when Martinez bats left-handed, but Ausmus doesn't plan to sit V-Mart against any more righties as he did on Friday. Worth noting is that Martinez is hitless in seven at-bats since he tweaked the knee on April 11.
Apr 19 - 11:01 AM

Alcides Escobar (knee) remained out of the Royals' lineup Sunday.

The Royals are hoping to avoid placing Escobar on the disabled list after he suffered a mild left knee strain on Friday, but it's possible he'll need a few more days. Christian Colon is again filling in at shortstop. Salvador Perez is also out of the lineup Sunday, as he's receiving his first day of rest this season. Erik Kratz is behind the dish.
Apr 19 - 10:49 AM

An MRI on Yunel Escobar's groin showed only inflammation.

Escobar was injured on Friday when he tweaked his groin while running out a ground ball. He'll avoid the disabled list for now, as the hope is that he can work out Sunday and return to the lineup Tuesday after Monday's off day. Danny Espinosa is at third base Sunday.
Apr 19 - 10:45 AM

Nationals activated OF Denard Span from the 15-day disabled list.

He's starting in center field and batting leadoff versus the Phillies. Span made a rapid recovery from core muscle surgery, as the initial belief was that he would likely be sidelined into May. Michael Taylor has been sent down to Triple-A in a corresponding roster move.
Apr 19 - 10:19 AM

Angels activated RHP Garrett Richards from the 15-day disabled list.

Richards will make his season debut on Sunday in Houston after successfully rehabbing a torn patella tendon in his left knee. The right-hander wasn't great in his lone official rehab start, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out five over five innings. Still, he's facing an Astros squad that swings and misses a lot, so we wouldn't blame fantasy owners for throwing him out there right away.
Apr 19 - 9:15 AM

Chris Young hit a seventh inning grand slam to lead the Yankees to a 9-0 victory over the Rays on Saturday.

Young hit the two-out slam off of former closer Grant Balfour in the seventh inning, capping off a seven-run frame. The home run, Young's third of the season, doubled his season RBI total to eight. He's now slashing .276/.344/.690. While those are shiny numbers, Young's fantasy value is capped by the fact that he's only a decent play against left-handed pitching. The last time he had a season with 20 home runs was in 2011. Deeper mixed leagues without weekly locks might consider him, though.
Apr 18 - 11:23 PM

Rays designated RHP Grant Balfour for assignment.

It's a curious move as the Rays still owe Balfour almost $7 million. Either way, this is one signing Tampa Bay would like to forget. The usually cash-conscious Rays splurged for a closer last offseason, only to find Balfour's best years were behind him. He imploded Saturday against the Yankees, giving up three runs in 2/3 of an inning. The 37-year-old will probably land another big league job, but he's getting close to the finish line.
Apr 18 - 11:13 PM

Jake Odorizzi struck out nine batters and allowed three runs over six innings in Saturday's 9-0 loss to the Yankees.

Despite another good outing he was unable to come away with the win, as Masahiro Tanaka completely dominated Odorizzi's offensive teammates. A Brian McCann RBI triple(!) in the sixth inning broke a scoreless tie. Despite the ultimate team loss, Odorizzi is off to one of the best starts in the majors. His ERA sits at a sterling 1.75 and he's allowed just nine hits over 20 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old has struck out 19 over that same stretch. He'll try to continue his high-strikeout ways against the Blue Jays.
