Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Mariners "look like a possible new entry in the Josh Hamilton sweepstakes."

The Mariners aren't often in the bidding for top free agents, but they obviously need offensive help, so perhaps they could make a splash and try to land the top bat on the market. The Orioles are also new entrants into the sweepstakes, joining the Rangers and Brewers. Heyman also lists the Braves and Pirates but indicates both would probably be longshot landing spots.

Marcus Stroman allowed just one hit over seven innings and combined with two relievers on an 8-0 shutout the Red Sox on Thursday.

Showing once again how huge momentum is in baseball, the Jays ended up winning three straight over Boston after getting crushed 14-1 in Monday's season opener. The Red Sox's lone hit today was Shane Victorino's flare single in the seventh. However, even if that didn't drop in, it's unlikely Stroman would have had a chance to go for the no-no; he was at 97 pitches after seven innings and the Jays are being careful with him. The rookie is now 6-2 with a 3.21 ERA.

David Ortiz is day-to-day with spasms in his upper middle back.

Ortiz left Thursday's game against the Blue Jays in the ninth inning after tweaking his back on a swing. However, it doesn't sound like a major concern.

David Ortiz left Thursday's game against the Blue Jays with an apparent back injury.

Ortiz took a hard check-swing in the ninth inning and immediately grabbed his lower back. The Red Sox should provide a status update shortly on the veteran DH.

Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that the Mariners are calling up infielder Chris Taylor.

Taylor, a fifth-round pick in 2012, owns a promising .328/.397/.497 batting line with five home runs and 14 stolen bases in 75 games this season at Triple-A Tacoma. The 23-year-old shortstop prospect probably isn't being promoted to sit on the bench, so this could mean a significant drop in playing time for the struggling Brad Miller. Taylor is worth a look in deep mixed leagues.

Brandon Morrow (finger) threw off a mound Thursday for the first time since landing on the disabled list.

Morrow has been on the disabled list since early May with a torn tendon sheath in his right index finger. "It was good," the right-hander said of Thursday's short workout. "I still had the tape job on my finger so it’s not completely there, but the bullpen was fine." He could be a relief (or rotation) option for Toronto around late August.

Mariners acquired 1B/DH Kendrys Morales from the Twins for RHP Stephen Pryor.

Morales is back in Seattle after hitting just .234/.259/.325 in 162 plate appearances with the Twins, who signed him to a prorated one-year, $12 million contract in early June. The 31-year-old tallied 23 home runs and 80 RBI last season for the Mariners and will try to recapture that magic down the stretch. He was given a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer from the M's last fall and declined it, leading to his extended unemployment.

Marwin Gonzalez is in the Astros' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon versus the Athletics.

Gonzalez was pulled from Wednesday's game with soreness in his right hamstring -- something he's been dealing with since last week. But it's a manageable injury and he'll start at shortstop on Thursday. Gonzalez is batting .294/.333/.412 so far in July. He took over starting duties from Jonathan Villar at the end of June.

Yoenis Cespedes (thumb) is not in the A's starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Astros.

Cespedes sprained his right thumb on a hard swing late Wednesday night -- after clubbing two home runs earlier in the game. X-rays ruled out a fracture, but the Cuban slugger could need multiple days of rest.

Athletics designated RHP Jim Johnson for assignment.

Oakland GM Billy Beane made a rare mistake this winter when he traded for Johnson and his $10 million salary for 2014. The right-hander had poor peripherals in Baltimore despite his dominant save totals and wound up posting a brutal 6.92 ERA in 40 1/3 innings with the A's. Johnson should latch on with a new team pretty quickly as a reclamation project, but he's probably done getting save opportunities.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Rockies asked for Kevin Gausman in exchange for Jorge De La Rosa.

It was worth a shot, but the O's weren't going to bite on that ridiculous request. Gausman has tremendous upside and at least five more years of cost control. De La Rosa, meanwhile, is set to become a free agent this winter. Baltimore is seeking pitching upgrades with the July 31 trade deadline approaching, but it's been a seller-friendly market so far and the club is reluctant to part with any top prospects.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Padres "have sent word to some teams that they would need to be overwhelmed to trade" starting pitcher Ian Kennedy.

This could be a negotiating ploy on the part of the Padres, or it might just be serious. Kennedy is under contractual control (via arbitration) through the 2015 season, so the San Diego front office can slow-play this and wait for the best offer -- even if it doesn't come until this winter or next summer. The 29-year-old right-hander owns an impressive 3.66 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 143/42 K/BB ratio in 135 1/3 innings (22 starts) this season.
