Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Nationals and manager Davey Johnson have agreed on the terms of a new contract.

Details of the deal are not yet known, but Heyman says the two sides are "just finalizing legal issues/paperwork." Johnson was always fully expected to return after leading the Nats to a major league-leading 98 wins. He's the favorite to win NL Manager of the Year honors next week.

Cory Spangenberg hit a pinch-hit, walk-off homer in the ninth inning of Tuesday's 2-1 win against the Diamondbacks.

This Major League Baseball thing isn't so hard, after all. Spangenberg, promoted from Double-A San Antonio on Tuesday, rapped a two-run single in his major league debut Monday to push the Padres to a 3-1 victory over these same Snakes. In so doing, he became the third player in club history to have multiple RBI in his debut. Twenty-four hours later, he took steady veteran Brad Ziegler deep to end the game. The 23-year-old, the 10th overall pick in 2011, posted a robust .331/.365/.470 batting line earlier this year on the farm. Everyday playing time isn't guaranteed, but he's officially worth a flier in all NL-only formats.

Tyler Flowers hit two home runs and had four RBI as the White Sox topped the Twins 6-3 on Tuesday.

Flowers took Twins starter Tommy Milone deep in the second inning for a two-run homer, and his two-run shot in the 10th padded the White Sox lead. Flowers now has 12 home runs and 45 RBI on the year, both career highs for the 28-year-old.

Jose Altuve did it again Tuesday, going 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the Astros' 8-3 win over the Angels.

The four-hit game was Altuve's second in a row, raising his average to .340. The home run was Altuve's seventh of the year, tying a career high, and he also stole his American League-best 50th base. For good measure, Altuve now has a 10-game hitting streak going.
Sep 3 - 12:29 AM

Billy Hamilton went 2-for-4 with a walk and stole his 55th base, setting a Reds rookie record, in Tuesday's loss to the Orioles.

Hamilton wasted no time setting the Reds' rookie record, reaching on an infield single in the first inning, then swiping second base. He then went for stolen base number 56 but was thrown out at third base. Hamilton owns a .269/.305/.382 slash line with six home runs and 46 RBI.
Sep 3 - 12:19 AM

Peter Bourjos went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the Cardinals' 6-4 win over the Pirates on Tuesday.

Making a spot start in center field, Bourjos singled and scored in both the second and fourth innings against Pirates starter Jeff Locke. He's got his average up to .233, but Jon Jay's strong hitting has relegated Bourjos to a backup role this season.
Sep 3 - 12:04 AM

Jake Arrieta held the Brewers to one run over six innings in a win on Tuesday.

Arrieta allowed five hits and two walks on the evening, striking out four. The biggest of those four came with runners on second and third with two outs in the sixth inning, getting Gerardo Parra swinging to end the threat. It was a nice bounce-back after one of his worst starts of the season against the Reds his last time out. Arrieta moved to 8-5 with a 2.81 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 139/38 K/BB ratio over 134 1/3 innings on the year. He'll take his talents north of the border Monday when the Cubs visit the Blue Jays for an interleague tilt.
Sep 2 - 11:41 PM

R.A. Dickey earned his 11th win, holding the Rays to two runs on two hits and three walks over seven innings on Tuesday.

Dickey starts September off strong, as he hopes to have a third month with a sub-4.00 ERA -- the others occurring in May and July. The right-hander punched out six Rays en route to his win on Tuesday. Now with a 3.94 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP, and a 153/66 K/BB ratio, Dickey will go for win number 12 at Fenway Park against the Red Sox on Sunday.
Sep 2 - 11:30 PM

Jarrod Dyson stole three bases and scored the game-winning run as the Royals edged the Rangers 2-1 on Tuesday.

Dyson entered as a pinch runner for Nori Aoki in the sixth inning and proceeded to steal third base. He later grounded into a fielder's choice before stealing second and third, scoring on a Sal Perez infield single. The steals gave Dyson 33 stolen bases on the season. Owners desperately looking for steals in the season's final month could do worse than Dyson.

Derek Holland tossed seven strong innings in his season debut Tuesday, keeping the Royals to one run in a no-decision.

Holland showed no signs of rust after missing five months following knee surgery. The southpaw gave up six hits but didn't walk a batter, striking out six. It was certainly a promising start for the 27-year-old, especially given how his rehab outings had gone in the weeks leading up to his debut. Holland will look for another good showing Sunday against the Mariners.
Sep 2 - 11:11 PM

J.D. Martinez slugged a go-ahead three-run home run in the ninth inning as the Tigers came back to beat the Indians on Tuesday.

The Tigers entered the inning trailing 2-1, but immediately put two runners on base against Cody Allen. After Victor Martinez flied out, J.D. Martinez pushed a fly ball 418 feet out to center field to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead, which was then protected by closer Joe Nathan. Martinez finished 3-for-5 on the night. He now sits on an impressive .311/.352/.559 slash line with 19 home runs and 63 RBI.
Sep 2 - 11:09 PM

Daniel Nava went 2-for-3 with a walk and a three-run home run as the Red Sox slugged their way to a win against the Yankees on Tuesday.

Nava helped put the Red Sox up 5-0 with his three-run blast off of Shane Greene in the third inning, his third homer of the year. It was his first long ball since April 15. Nava has done well in the on-base department but has otherwise not done much, slashing .263/.340/.345 with 23 RBI.
