Pirates signed C Wyatt Toregas to a minor league contract.

Toregas was out of baseball last season, but appeared in four games with the Pirates in 2011. He'll serve as an emergency catcher at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Clint Robinson blasted a two-run homer on Friday, powering the Nationals to a 2-1 victory over the Giants.

Jake Peavy and Gio Gonzalez were locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel until the seventh inning when Buster Posey cranked a solo homer to give the Giants the lead. It would be short-lived though, as Robinson blasted his two-run shot in the bottom half of the inning, proving to be the difference in the game. He has done a nice job in limited action for the Nationals, slashing .264/.338/424 with four homers and 15 RBI.
Jul 3 - 8:58 PM

Miguel Cabrera was removed from Friday's game against the Blue Jays in the fourth inning due to an apparent hamstring injury.

Cabrera was running to second base on a 3-2 pitch to Victor Martinez when he pulled up lame. He had to be assisted off the field by the training staff and was walking with a noticeable limp. The Tigers should have an update on his status soon, but any sort of extended absence would be a deadly blow to the Tigers chances of a postseason berth.
Jul 3 - 8:12 PM

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets are willing to overpay to acquire Ben Zobrist from the Athletics.

With the A's winning 12 of their last 18 games, there is hope within the organization that they could still make a run for the postseason, so at least for now Zobrist has been pulled off the trade block. That being said, you never want to give away leverage in a negotiating situation and now that the word is out A's general manager Billy Beane is likely to demand a king's ransom from the Mets in exchange for Zobrist.
Jul 3 - 7:22 PM

Matt Holliday (quad) increased the intensity of his running on Friday.

Holliday began light jogging earlier this week and is slowly but surely ramping things up. The outfielder admitted that he's not anywhere close to full speed yet. The Cardinals are hoping to get Holliday back prior to the All-Star break, but it's no sure thing.
Jul 3 - 5:50 PM

Derek Holland (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday.

It's the first time he's thrown off a mound since he went down with a subscapular strain in his left shoulder in early April. There's currently no timetable for Holland's return, but he should be able to begin a rehab assignment before long.
Jul 3 - 5:47 PM

Sonny Gray (illness) is not expected to need a stint on the disabled list.

Gray has started to feel much better the last couple days after being knocked out for a while with a bout of salmonella. He should be ready to rejoin the Athletics' rotation early next week.
Jul 3 - 5:42 PM

Justin Bour homered for the fourth straight game Friday, with his solo shot proving to be the winning run in a victory over the Cubs.

Making a bid for National League Player of the Week honors, Bour put a Jason Hammel offering into the basket in right field in the sixth inning. He also singled and drew a walk, reaching base in three of four plate appearances. Michael Morse (back) is due back soon, but he might have a better shot to play in the outfield with the way Bour is going.
Jul 3 - 5:18 PM

Patrick Corbin (elbow) will make his season debut on Saturday against the Rockies.

Corbin had been slated for one more rehab start, but the Diamondbacks felt that he looked ready on his rehab assignment so they will bring him back a little early. Making his way back from Tommy John surgery, the left-hander put up a 4.76 ERA and 11/7 K/BB ratio over 17 rehab innings. Ideally, fantasy owners should give him at least a start or two before sticking him back into their lineup.
Jul 3 - 5:10 PM

Tigers activated C Alex Avila from the 15-day disabled list.

Avila missed nearly two months of action with a left knee issue. He returns to a .200/.342/.317 batting line with two homers across 22 games this season.
Jul 3 - 3:25 PM

Tigers designated RHP Joba Chamberlain for assignment.

Chamberlain pitched well for the Tigers last season and wound up resigning over the winter. He went on to post a 4.09 ERA and 1.68 WHIP over 30 appearances and was particularly bad of late with eight runs allowed over his last seven games. He'll clear waivers and get a shot elsewhere. Detroit also designated Tom Gorzelanny for assignment as they shake up their bullpen.
Jul 3 - 3:12 PM

Yankees placed OF Carlos Beltran on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 1, with a left oblique strain.

The Yanks gave Beltran a couple days to see if he could improve enough to avoid the DL, but obviously it didn't happen. He'll be eligible for activation immediately following the All-Star break, but it remains to be ready if he'll be ready at that time.
