Rangers signed OF Aaron Cunningham to a minor league contract.

The deal includes a spring training invite. Cunningham, 26, batted .175 (17-for-97) with one home run and a .493 OPS in 72 games with the Indians this season. He'll likely serve as depth at the Triple-A level in 2013.

Edwin Diaz collapsed Wednesday against the Orioles, yielding two runs and three walks before being lifted with two outs in the ninth inning.

Just 16 of the right-hander’s 37 pitches went for strikes. Manager Scott Servais decided he’d seen enough after Diaz hit Mark Trumbo with the bases loaded to bring in another run. Mark Rzepczynski came in to record the final out, striking out Chris Davis to preserve the Mariners’ 7-6 victory while earning his first save of the season. Diaz lost his closer’s job for a stretch earlier this year and could be headed that way again, particularly with David Phelps nearing a return from the disabled list.

Tim Beckham homered as part of a two-hit effort Wednesday in the Orioles’ loss to Seattle.

Beckham led off the game with a solo blastn and broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI single in the fifth. He’s been impossibly hot since arriving in a deadline deal trade with Tampa Bay, hitting an absurd .485 for the month of August. The former first overall pick has already established new career-highs in both home runs (17) and RBI (48) and will soon have a chance to unseat J.J. Hardy (wrist) as the team's everyday shortstop.

Phillies optioned RHP Nick Pivetta to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

This comes after Pivetta scattered five hits and three runs while delivering a career-high 11 strikeouts in Wednesday's loss to San Diego. This is merely a procedural move as Pivetta is fully expected to make his next start. The Phillies have a doubleheader against the Marlins on Tuesday, at which point Pivetta will rejoin the rotation as the team's 26th man.

Cody Bellinger is not in the Dodgers' lineup Wednesday against the White Sox.

The Rookie of the Year frontrunner will get a rare day off on Wednesday. Rob Segedin will man first base in his absence while batting eighth against Pale Hose left-hander Carlos Rodon. The 22-year-old has cruised to a .333 average with six homers this month.
Aug 16 - 7:12 PM

Lance McCullers (back) is slated to throw another bullpen session on Thursday.

It will be his second bullpen session since going down with a back injury at the end of last month. Manager A.J. Hinch seems to be pleased with McCullers' progress and says there's a rehab assignment "in sight." McCullers earned his first All-Star nod earlier this year but has pitched to a disastrous 9.42 ERA over three second-half starts.
Aug 16 - 6:55 PM

Aroldis Chapman (hamstring) won't be available Wednesday against the Mets.

Chapman is being put through some tests after complaining of a tight hamstring on Tuesday night. Despite his recent struggles, manager Joe Girardi said the Yankees have no plans to remove Chapman from the ninth inning. Should a save situation arise, David Robertson will operate as the closer on Wednesday night.
Aug 16 - 6:10 PM

Masahiro Tanaka (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session on Thursday.

It will be the right-hander's first mound session since landing on the DL with right shoulder inflammation last week. The Yankees are hoping to have Tanaka back next week against Detroit. He's looked much better since the All-Star break, contributing a 3.13 ERA over five second-half starts.
Aug 16 - 6:06 PM

Keon Broxton hit two solo homers Wednesday in the Brewers' 7-6 comeback win over the Pirates.

The first solo shot got Milwaukee on the board in the bottom of the third inning and the second tied the game at 5-5. Broxton also homered as a pinch-hitter on Tuesday night and the 27-year-old outfielder now has 19 total homers in 107 games this season. He has also racked up 19 stolen bases.
Aug 16 - 5:37 PM

Kole Calhoun hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the Angels' 3-2 win over the Nationals on Wednesday.

Calhoun went way deep to right field off Nationals starter Tanner Roark in the top of the sixth inning. He also drew a walk in the afternoon victory in Washington, D.C., finishing 1-for-3. The 29-year-old outfielder is now slashing .241/.320/.374 with 14 home runs and 49 RBI in 115 games this season for the Wild Card-hunting Halos.
Aug 16 - 4:17 PM

Ben Zobrist (neck) is back in the Cubs' lineup on Wednesday night against the Reds.

Zobrist was held out of the starting lineup Tuesday due to a stiff neck, but he came off the bench and drove in the Cubs' only run with a pinch-hit RBI single. He will start at second base and bat leadoff Wednesday versus Cincinnati right-hander Homer Bailey.
Aug 16 - 3:56 PM

Andrew Benintendi (knee) is in the Red Sox starting lineup on Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Benintendi left Tuesday night's blowout win over St. Louis after taking a Mike Leake pitch off his left knee in the bottom of the fifth inning. There was never any serious concern. Benintendi is 18-for-43 (.419) with five home runs, 13 RBI, five stolen bases, and 12 runs scored in 11 games this month. He'll start in left field and bat third Wednesday versus Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn.
