Brandon McCarthy (head) was cleared for all baseball activities Wednesday after 20 hours of testing.

Wonderful news. McCarthy needed life-saving emergency brain surgery after getting hit in the head by a comebacker in September. But he's now a free agent and should do pretty well for himself on the open market this winter. The 29-year-old right-hander boasts a 3.29 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 43 starts since the beginning of the 2011 season. The A's are known to want him back.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times speculates that Alex Cobb has a partial elbow ligament tear.

It's important to note that the Rays have not made any sort of announcement on Cobb's status, so Topkin categorized this as "informed speculation" after his recent setback and a new MRI. The belief is that the Rays will wait to see how he responds to rest and treatment, but if Topkin is correct, Tommy John surgery could very well be in his future. Stay tuned.

Marlins released C Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

This confirms a report from CBS Sports' Jon Heyman. The Marlins expressed optimism for finding a trade partner after they designated Saltalamacchia for assignment last week, but nothing has materialized. This means that the Marlins will be responsible for the remainder of his three-year, $21 million contract and he'll be free to sign with another club at the major league minimum. He should have no shortage of suitors as a free agent. The Royals, Rays, and Diamondbacks are among the teams who have been mentioned as possibilities.

Christian Yelich (back) will likely be activated from the disabled list Friday.

The original timeline had him returning Thursday, but the Marlins want him to play another minor league rehab game. He's 1-for-5 with a walk and a stolen base over his first two games with High-A Jupiter. Yelich has been sidelined for two weeks with a herniated disk in his back.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman writes that Rougned Odor is a candidate for a demotion.

It's unclear whether Heyman is just speculating or has inside information, but it wouldn't be surprising if the possibility is on the table. The 21-year-old has struggled to the tune of a .146/.263/.244 batting line across his first 25 games this season. He was rushed to the majors out of need last year, so some more seasoning in the minors might not be the worst thing for him.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Brewers are not willing to trade Jonathan Lucroy.

The Brewers look like obvious sellers at the moment, with names like Kyle Lohse and Matt Garza likely to be dealt. Lucroy would obviously net a bigger return than either of them, but the Brewers see him as a core player. The 28-year-old is making $3 million this season and $4 million next year while his contract includes a $5.25 million club option for 2017.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Monday that David Wright (hamstring) is not back to 100 percent yet.

Wright ramped up some baseball activities last week, but he's not running at 100 percent and the Mets won't have a clear timetable for his return until he does. "It’s just hard to say," said Alderson. "He could be a week away, could be 10 days away. Until he gets into a game situation and feels confident with the leg, we’re not going to know." There was some talk about him returning this weekend, but now it appears that the best-case scenario is sometime next week. Daniel Murphy will continue to play third base during his absence while young Dilson Herrera will play second.

Madison Bumgarner flirted with a no-hitter in Monday's win against the Padres, tossing 7 1/3 scoreless innings.

Justin Upton singled to lead off the seventh inning, ending Bumgarner's attempt at a no-hitter. Yangervis Solarte followed up with a single himself, but Bumgarner saw himself out of the no-out jam with no further damage. They were the only two hits he allowed. He issued only one walk while striking out six. The lefty has put together back-to-back dominant outings, lowering his ERA to 3.03. Bumgarner also owns a 1.06 WHIP with a 32/6 K/BB ratio in 38 2/3 innings. He'll take on the Marlins at home next.
May 5 - 1:02 AM

Nelson Cruz broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning with a solo home run, his 14th of the season, to help the Mariners take down the Angels on Monday.

Angels starter Matt Shoemaker was twirling a gem until Cruz ripped a line drive down the left field line to put the Mariners up 1-0. He finished 1-for-4 on the night. Cruz has four home runs in his last four ballgames. Along with the 14 in total, he has knocked in 26 runs and is batting .340/.382/.796.

Mark Reynolds went 2-for-3 with a walk and a grand slam as the Cardinals narrowly defeated the Cubs on Monday.

The Cardinals were behind 5-0 before they even had a chance to bat, but Reynolds immediately brought them back into the game with a grand slam in the bottom half of the inning off of Travis Wood. It's only the second home run of the year for Reynolds, who has served as a pinch-hitter and occasional first baseman against left-handed starters. He's batting .216/.341/.459 on the year along with eight RBI.
May 4 - 11:55 PM

Stephen Vogt finished 3-for-5 with a grand slam and an RBI double in Monday's loss versus the Twins.

Vogt sent the A's up 4-0 early with a first-inning grand slam off of Phil Hughes. He added an RBI double in the ninth in an attempt to help his team stage a comeback, but it fell short. Vogt homered twice and knocked in four runs on Sunday, continuing what has been a highly productive season. He's batting .372/.462/.718 with seven home runs and 25 RBI on the season.

X-rays on Leonys Martin's left wrist came back negative.

Martin injured the wrist while trying to make a catch on Monday, but he's managed to come away with just a bruise. Consider the outfielder day-to-day.
