Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that B.J. Upton is the Braves' top free agent target.

Bowman says the Braves "had visions" of signing both Upton and Torii Hunter. Now that Hunter is obviously no longer an option, it's possible Upton will be even more of a priority for them. They'll receive stiff competition from other clubs, though, with the Phillies, Nationals and Rangers being mentioned as possible suitors. David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported earlier this month that Angel Pagan is also likely high on the Braves' wish list.

Aledmys Diaz hit a walk-off single to complete the comeback against the Padres on Thursday, giving the Cardinals a 6-5 win.

Down 5-1 in the eighth inning, the Cardinals scored four to tie the game, and Diaz came up with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning with a chance to be a hero. He did just that, lining a Carlos Villanueva pitch over the shortstop's head to bring home the winning run. Diaz finished 2-for-5 with two RBI in the game. The 25-year-old is hitting .319/.387/.533 with 13 homers, 51 RBI and 61 runs scored in a breakout rookie season.

Tom Koehler tossed eight strong innings Thursday, holding the Phillies to three runs -- one earned -- in a 9-3 victory.

The three runs were a bit misleading, as an error in the fourth inning prolonged the frame for Ryan Howard, who hit a two-run shot. The homer was the first hit allowed in the game by Koehler, and he would allow just one more before exiting. Koehler also walked one while striking out five. The win was his first in over a month, improving his record to 7-8 with a 4.42 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. A rematch with the Phillies is up next, on Tuesday.

Francisco Liriano struck out 13 Brewers hitters while allowing three runs -- two earned -- over 6 2/3 innings in a 5-3 win Thursday.

Well, that was unexpected. It's not that Liriano isn't capable of double-digit strikeout dominance, but his only other starts with 10 or more strikeouts both came against the Cardinals, and both were before May 7. Liriano now has 106 strikeouts in 105 1/3 innings of work, owning a 4.96 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. The southpaw will look to stay hot Wednesday against the Mariners.

Dustin Pedroia had a huge night Tuesday, finishing 5-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored as the Red Sox pummeled the Twins 13-2 on Thursday.

Pedroia and the Red Sox knocked 17 hits in the one-sided win. For the second baseman, his five hits matched his total from the previous nine games. Pedroia is now hitting .304/.372/.444 with 61 runs scored on the year.

Matt Holliday is considered day-to-day after being diagnosed with a facial abrasion in the nose/upper lip area.

Given the fact that he was drilled by a 95-mph fastball from Andrew Cashner on Thursday, this sounds like the best possible outcome for the veteran outfielder. He may sit out on Friday as a precaution, but expect him to return to the Cardinals lineup over the weekend.
Jul 21 - 9:31 PM

Starling Marte was a late scratch from the Pirates starting lineup on Thursday due to flu-like symptoms.

Marte was in the initial lineup, but was feeling a bit under the weather and manager Clint Hurdle wanted to play it safe and give him a night off. Gregory Polanco will shift to left field with Matt Joyce entering the lineup to play right.
Jul 21 - 6:57 PM

Nolan Arenado is not in Thursday's lineup against the Braves.

It sounds like a routine day off for the All-Star third baseman. Cristhian Adames will start at third base and bat eighth against Mike Foltynewicz.

RotoGrinders.com Daily Slant: Arenado's absence is bad news for the DFS community, although it brightens the outlook for a few of the Rockies bats who find themselves in favorable lineup spots. Daniel Descalso will slide up to the fifth spot in the order, and while he's been thought of as a light-hitting infielder throughout his career, he's enjoying a .394 wOBA at home against RHP this season. Trevor Story slots into the clean-up spot behind Blackmon, LeMahieu and Gonzalez, giving him some added RBI opportunities.
Jul 21 - 5:05 PM

Chris Tillman whiffed seven batters over seven frames of one-run ball in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Yankees.

The Bombers cut the Orioles' lead to 2-1 on a Starlin Castro RBI single in the second inning, but Tillman then retired 16 of the final 17 batters he faced. He yielded only four hits -- three singles -- on the day while walking two. The right-hander has gone seven innings and allowed just one run in each of his last four trips to the hill. He'll carry a 14-2 record and 3.18 ERA into outings against the Rockies and Blue Jays next week.

J.D. Martinez (elbow) could take batting practice on the field Thursday.

Assuming the weather cooperates, it would be his first time taking BP since suffering a fracture in his right elbow last month. Tigers manager Brad Asmus said Monday that Martinez is still a couple of weeks away, but he's making progress.
Jul 21 - 4:09 PM

Jonathan Lucroy is not in the Brewers' starting lineup Thursday night against the Pirates.

Commence the trade speculation. Lucroy tallied three RBI and a stolen base on Wednesday night, but Martin Maldonado will get the nod at catcher Thursday. He is batting eighth versus Bucs lefty Francisco Liriano.
Jul 21 - 3:57 PM

Justin Turner blasted a pair of home runs and drove in five runs in Thursday's victory over the Nationals.

Both longballs came off of Stephen Strasburg, as Turner launched a slider in the first inning for a two-run shot and then a fastball in the third for a three-run homer. Turner put up a .235/.335/.343 batting line with three homers in his first 50 games this season after last October's microfracture surgery on his knee. However, he's been mashing the ball since and now has a career-high 17 longballs to go along with a nice .267/.345/.482 line.
