Angels signed RHP Billy Buckner to a minor league contract.

It's not clear whether he'll be given a spring training invite. Buckner put up a 3.65 ERA over 27 starts in the Red Sox' minor league system this season but hasn't toed a major league rubber since 2010. He'll start the year at Triple-A.

Mark Teixeira (wrist) went 1-for-2 with a walk Monday in his first extended spring training game.

Teixeira reported feeling "good" on his personal Twitter feed afterward. The first baseman is currently aiming to be activated from the disabled list by May 31, but the Yankees are at the top of the American League East standings and could decide to play it safe by letting his minor league rehab assignment linger into early June. Teixeira is on his way back from a torn tendon sheath.

Danny Hultzen (shoulder) has begun playing catch.

Hultzen was shut down in late April with a left rotator cuff strain and general shoulder tendinitis. The Mariners are expected to take it very slowly with their prized pitching prospect. He had a cool 2.78 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 25/6 K/BB ratio through his first 22 2/3 innings (four starts) this season at Triple-A Tacoma and could reach the major leagues later this summer if he can get healthy.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Monday that Anthony Gose will not be an everyday player.

The talented 22-year-old outfielder was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday morning but isn't likely to hold much value in standard mixed fantasy leagues. Gibbons said Gose will "help out on defense" and as a pinch-runner. He will not make very many starts.

David Freese needed stitches along the base of his right thumb after Sunday's win over the Brewers.

Freese suffered a small gash while applying a diving tag on Norichika Aoki's cleat at home plate. The Cardinals' third baseman does not expect to miss any playing time. He's finally starting to come alive offensively after a dreadful first month-plus and might make for a decent buy-low candidate in some fantasy formats.
May 20 - 10:02 AM

Oscar Taveras (ankle) is expected to return to action at Triple-A Memphis by the middle of this week.

Taveras injured his right ankle last Sunday while attempting to steal second base. X-rays taken in the immediate aftermath showed no structural damage, but the Cardinals have understandably decided to play it safe with their top prospect. Taveras, 20, was batting .317 with an .831 OPS through his first 31 games this season for the Memphis Redbirds. He should reach the major league level at some point in 2013.
May 20 - 8:48 AM

Gordon Beckham (hand) tallied three hits Sunday in his second rehab game with Triple-A Charlotte.

Beckham went 2-for-4 on Saturday in his rehab debut and is looking ready to rejoin the White Sox. But since he's been out so long -- over five weeks -- the second baseman will likely remain on the farm until Friday.
May 20 - 8:15 AM

Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-4 with three home runs and five RBI in Sunday night's loss to the Rangers.

Cabrera launched a three-run homer in the third inning and a solo shot in the fifth off Derek Holland before he added a third home run late off Tanner Scheppers. The weather conditions at Arlington obviously played a factor, but it was a monster of a performance. Cabrera is currently on track to have a better season than his Triple Crown winning campaign in 2012. He has 11 home runs and leads the American League in batting average (.387), runs (34), and slugging-percentage (.659).
May 19 - 11:59 PM

Bobby Parnell earned his sixth save of 2013 in the Mets' 4-3 win over the Cubs on Sunday.

Parnell struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning. The 28-year-old right-hander has an exceptional 0.93 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 18/3 K/BB ratio in 19 1/3 innings this season to go along with his six saves. The Mets aren't going to win many games, but Parnell carries plenty of mixed league fantasy value.
May 19 - 5:33 PM

Matt Moore ran his record to 8-0 after tossing seven innings of one-run ball in Sunday's 3-1 victory over the Orioles.

Moore notched just three strikeouts on the day, but he allowed only five hits and walked one. The left-hander has still had some control problems this season, but he's limited the damage by giving up just 34 hits over 55 innings. A few more balls are sure to start falling in at some point, but the young southpaw should remain a fantasy ace. He'll face the Yankees next weekend.
May 19 - 5:19 PM

Ryan Howard will have a precautionary MRI on his left knee Monday.

The full extent of the injury isn't yet known, but it could provide some context to Howard's early struggles. The Phillies will provide an update on his status following the results of the MRI. Howard is not expected to play in Monday's game against the Marlins.
May 19 - 5:08 PM

Rangers placed 2B Ian Kinsler on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 18, with an intercostal strain.

Kinsler hasn't started the last two games with rib soreness and said he still felt discomfort during batting practice on Sunday. The Rangers aren't overly concerned about the injury, but top prospect Jurickson Profar will be called up to replace Kinsler on the active roster. Kinsler is batting .302/.369/.500 with seven home runs through his first 40 games this season.
