Twins signed INF James Beresford to a minor league contract.

The deal includes a spring training invitation. The 23-year-old has spent the majority of his minor league career in the Twins' organization, posting an underwhelming .279/.339/.319 line with one home run in 585 games. He'll compete for a utility infielder role with the Twins.

Ryan Braun is out Tuesday with a sore wrist.

But the veteran outfielder is expected to return to action Wednesday, so it's obviously not too serious. Michael Reed will start in left field and bat eighth Tuesday versus Rangers right-hander A.J. Griffin.

Eduardo Nunez (hamstring) is out of the Giants' starting lineup on Tuesday night.

Nunez injured his right hamstring on a slide in Sunday's series finale against the Padres. Conor Gillaspie will start at third base and bat eighth for the Giants on Tuesday versus Rockies right-hander German Marquez. Nunez was scheduled to undergo an MRI on the hamstring Monday or Tuesday.

A.J. Cole has been suspended five games by Major League Baseball for throwing at Jung Ho Kang on Sunday.

Cole was retaliating for Kang's fake tag on Bryce Harper in the top of the third inning, which led to Harper dropping into an awkward slide and suffering a left thumb injury. Cole was also fined for the attempted beanball -- it actually sailed behind Kang. He is appealing the five-game suspension and will remain active until that appeal is heard. The suspension might have to be served in 2017.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo confirmed Tuesday that Stephen Strasburg (elbow) is unlikely to pitch in the NLDS.

Strasburg has resumed playing catch following an extended shutdown period, but the ace right-hander is simply running out of time as he attempts to rehab a flexor mass strain. If the Nationals advance to the NLCS, they can reevaluate his status. Strasburg would be a nice weapon in long relief if he's feeling up to it.

Matt Holliday (thumb) is doubtful to return to the Cardinals' active roster this year.

Holliday was aiming to take live batting practice over the weekend, but it didn't happen. The veteran outfielder is apparently still dealing with some discomfort and strength issues surrounding his surgically-repaired right thumb. St. Louis has an interesting decision to make this winter with Holliday holding a $17 million club option for 2017. He posted a career-low .768 OPS with 19 homers and 60 RBI in 107 games this season and will turn 37 years old in January.

Ryan Braun is getting the night off Tuesday.

Michael Reed will start in left field and bat eighth versus Rangers right-hander A.J. Griffin. This appears to be a routine day of rest for Braun, who's slashing .307/.368/.544 with 30 home runs and 90 RBI in 132 games this season. He also has 16 stolen bases and 78 runs scored.

Bartolo Colon suffered a sprained tendon in his right foot two weeks ago while running the bases.

That might help explain why he got blown up for seven runs over just 2 1/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Marlins. It was the worst start of the season for Colon, whose ERA jumped from 3.12 to 3.42. The hope is he can continue to pitch through the foot injury.

Drew Pomeranz has been scratched from his scheduled start Thursday against the Yankees due to soreness in his left forearm and concerns about his overall workload.

Henry Owens will take the mound instead at Yankee Stadium. According to the Red Sox, if Pomeranz pitches again this season it will be out of the bullpen. The southpaw holds a 3.35 ERA in a career-high 169 1/3 frames this year. He is eligible for salary arbitration this winter after earning $1.35 million in 2016.
Sep 27 - 5:01 PM

Masahiro Tanaka (forearm) played catch Tuesday and is planning to start Saturday.

But it's not clear if the Yankees will allow him to go ahead with that start given that they're pretty much out of Wild Card contention (and will almost certainly be eliminated by Saturday). Tanaka was scratched from his scheduled start Monday night against the Blue Jays after being diagnosed with a slight forearm strain. There should be something more official in a couple days.
Sep 27 - 4:48 PM

Tigers activated 3B Nick Castellanos from the 15-day disabled list.

Castellanos wound up missing just over seven weeks with a fractured left hand. He will be available off the Tigers' bench on Tuesday night and should return to the starting lineup Wednesday. The young third baseman was batting .286/.331/.500 with 18 home runs and 58 RBI in 105 games before the injury.
Sep 27 - 4:45 PM

Kevin Kiermaier (hand) is out again Tuesday.

Kiermaier was hit in the hand by a pitch on Sunday afternoon and is still dealing with some discomfort. He probably shouldn't be counted on in fantasy leagues over these final six games.
