Royals signed RHP Jeremy Guthrie to a three-year, $25 million contract.

Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reported the contract information. Guthrie will make $5 million next season, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. The Royals were reportedly unwilling to offer more than two years, but they ultimately caved to keep him in the fold. Guthrie earned the big payday after posting an impressive 3.16 ERA and 56/19 K/BB ratio over 91 innings after coming over from the Rockies in July. He'll be at the front of the Royals' rotation next season along with recent acquisition Ervin Santana.

James Shields held the White Sox to one run in seven innings Wednesday in a 2-1 Royals victory.

Shields was left with a no-decision because the Kansas City offense didn't break through for the lead until the top of the ninth inning. But the right-hander pitched very well, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out seven. He'll carry a 3.58 ERA and 1.27 WHIP into his next start at home against the Twins.

Eric Hosmer was pulled from Wednesday's game against the Cubs with "decreased grip strength in his hand."

That was the announcement from the Kansas City medical staff. Hosmer got hit by a pitch on Sunday and sat out Monday and Tuesday with what was called a right hand contusion. He obviously needs a little more rest.

Ruben Tejada left Wednesday's game against the Mariners after taking a Taijuan Walker pitch to the head.

The ball hit the front of Tejada's helmet and knocked it off. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, but the Mets will surely run concussion tests.

Mark Reynolds slugged two home runs Wednesday in the Brewers' 5-1 defeat of the visiting Reds.

Reynolds' offensive outburst helped Milwaukee to a big three-game sweep of Cincinnati. He hit a two-run bomb in the bottom of the sixth inning and then smacked a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth. The first baseman is batting just .207 this year, but he now has 16 home runs.

Yasiel Puig (hand) is not in the Dodgers' starting lineup on Wednesday against the Pirates.

Astros placed OF George Springer on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quad.

Shelby Miller will start fort the Cardinals on Saturday at Wrigley Field.

Carlos Martinez is being moved back to the bullpen. Miller has not been good this season, but Martinez had gone just four innings in back-to-back starts. The Cardinals are expected to acquire a starter at the deadline, so both pitchers could be relievers by August.
Jul 23 - 4:20 PM

The Pirates will place Starling Marte on the disabled list prior to Wednesday's game.

Marte took a fastball off his helmet on Friday, and although he was cleared off a possible concussion and played Monday, it appears he's had a setback. The Pirates should provide more on his status later Wednesday. Brent Morel will take his spot on the roster.

Cameron Maybin has been suspended 25 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for amphetamines.

It was Maybin's second positive test as you're only given a warning and eventually more testing after testing positive the first time. Maybin is batting just .247/.286/.368 over 62 games for the Padres this season. Jeff Francoeur has replaced him on the roster.
