Pirates signed RHP Erik Cordier to a minor league contract.

He also gets a spring training invite. Cordier, who turns 27 in February, posted an ugly 5.85 ERA in 32 1/3 innings this past season in the Braves' minor league system.

Tyson Ross was masterful on Thursday, allowing just one run in six innings in a win as the Padres routed the Cubs.

With 11 punch-outs, Ross joined the double-digit strikeout club for the first time this season and for just the second time in his career. The right-hander relented the one run when Luis Valbuena singled in Anthony Rizzo in the fourth. Overall, Ross allowed five hits and walked one. Now with a 2.65 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, and a 143/47 K/BB ratio, the All-Star will take on the Cardinals at home in his next start.

ESPN's Jim Bowden reports that the Yankees are in talks with the Rockies regarding Jorge De La Rosa.

It's clear that the Bombers aren't done adding pitching after the additions of Brandon McCarthy and Chris Capuano, as Bowden has linked them to Ian Kennedy and now to De La Rosa. The Rockies left-hander has a pedestrian 4.19 ERA this season but boasts a 1.78 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in three July starts.

Hector Noesi dominated the Twins on Thursday, allowing two runs in 7 2/3 innings in a win.

Noesi blanked the Twins through seven frames, but relented his first two runs when Danny Santana homered to right field with two outs in the eighth. On the night, Noesi limited the Twins to three hits while walking one and striking out three. At least for now, Noesi's ERA is back under 5.00 at 4.99 along with a 1.44 WHIP and 75/38 K/BB ratio. He'll have to face the Tigers in Detroit the next time he takes the mound.

ESPN's Jim Bowden reports that the Yankees and Padres are discussing a trade that would send Ian Kennedy to New York in exchange for third base prospect Eric Jagielo and pitching prospect Ian Clarkin.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman says that the Yankees are indeed interested in Kennedy but not if it means giving up both Jagielo and Clarkin. It would be Kennedy's second stint in New York if the trade did go through, as he was drafted by the Yanks and spent his first three big league seasons there. Needless to say, it would be just about the worse-case scenario for his fantasy value going from Petco Park to Yankee Stadium. Kennedy is making $6.1 million this season and is eligible for arbitration for a final time this winter.

Matt Garza tossed eight innings of one-run ball against the Mets en route to a win on Thursday.

Garza had a nightmarish outing last Saturday against the Nationals, but bounced back nicely against the Mets. He made only one damaging mistake, serving up a solo home run to Lucas Duda in the seventh. Overall, he allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out four. The right-hander now owns a 3.87 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 98/41 K/BB ratio. He'll face the Rays on the road in his next start.

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that teams have asked the Indians about the availability of Justin Masterson.

Making his way back from a knee injury, Masterson will make his second rehab start with Triple-A Columbus on Friday and could wind up returning with another team. The 29-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the season after extension talks with the Indians this spring broke down. Masterson has put up a disappointing 5.51 ERA through 19 starts in his walk year, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see him have a nice second half if his knee is right.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia doubled twice and knocked in the winning run with a ninth-inning single in four trips to the plate as the Marlins downed the Braves on Thursday.

A big game for Salty, who has now hit safely in four of five games since the All-Star break. He doubled and scored in the fifth, and knocked in a go-ahead run in the ninth inning with a single off of Craig Kimbrel. The catcher is slashing .232/.333/.414 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI on the season.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that a decision on whether Mark Teixeira (lat) will be placed on the disabled list will likely come Friday.

"It's just seeing how he feels after three or four days," Girardi said. "Then we'll decide if we think it's going to be the near future that he would play or we're going to need the 15-day [disabled list]. If it's going to be 12, 13, 14 days, it probably makes sense to get a player here." Girardi added that it's unlikely Teixeira will play Friday, but "you want to feel that there's progress and that he feels better to start doing some stuff." Teixeira hasn't played since Sunday due to a lower left lat strain.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Pirates' interest in A.J. Burnett is "mild at best."

He adds that their interest "might fall further" if Burnett intends to pick up his 2015 player option, which would be worth $12.75 million if he makes 32 starts this season. Burnett, of course, pitched for the Pirates from 2012-13 and they wanted to re-sign him over the winter but were outbid by the Phillies. Heyman also says that the Orioles' interest in Burnett "doesn't seem keen, either." The righty holds a good-but-not-great 3.86 ERA in 2014 and it appears his market might be drying up.

Manny Machado (back) is hoping to return to action sometime over the weekend.

Machado is missing a third straight contest Thursday with what he calls annoying pain" in his lower back, but he's expected to take batting practice and field grounders prior to the game. Ryan Flaherty is getting a third straight start at third base Thursday.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Cubs are "trying to trade" Edwin Jackson.

It won't be easy, as Jackson has posted a 5.22 ERA over 51 starts for the Cubs and is due about $26 million through the 2016 season. However, the right-hander is durable and has flashed upside in the past, so it's possible the Cubs might find a taker as long as they're willing to eat most of the contract. The Yankees have been mentioned as possible suitors of Jackson, though that might change now that they've acquired Chris Capuano.
