Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox are "closing in" on a two-year deal with Jonny Gomes.

This confirms a report by Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com. The Red Sox are also talking to Cody Ross, but Gomes is likely to sign for significantly less. The 31-year-old batted .262/.377/.491 with 18 home runs and an .868 OPS in 333 plate appearances with the A's this season. Gomes is a pretty terrible fielder and has enjoyed most of his success against southpaws, but he should provide value if used appropriately.

A source tells Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star that the Royals aren't close to a deal for Emilio Bonifacio.

Bonifacio was on hug watch after his name was absent from a delayed Cubs starting lineup, and the Royals were reported as his expected destination. It still could happen, but right now there doesn't seem to be a ton of fire there. Bonifacio and his .279/.318/.373 line remain likely to be moved before Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline.

Pablo Sandoval went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Giants topped the Pirates 7-5 on Wednesday.

The Giants banged out 12 hits in the game, all singles. Sandoval drove in a run, his 45th RBI of the season, with a hit in the eighth inning. The RBI and runs scored were his first in seven games, and he's without an extra-base hit in that span. The third baseman is hitting .277/.326/.425 overall.

A source tells FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal that the Royals, Pirates, Marlins "and others" are in on Ian Kennedy.

Rosenthal also notes the right-hander isn't a certainty to be dealt at the deadline. The Padres would have incentive to hold onto him, as Kennedy still has another year of arbitration before becoming a free agent. Still, he's having a great year and the Padres would likely be better dealing him for players who will be peaking closer to when they're ready to contend. Stay tuned.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports the Blue Jays are looking at Asdrubal Cabrera to fill their second base vacancy.

The Jays have a need but don't have much payroll flexibility, making Cabrera and his expiring contract a fit. FOX Sports' Jon Morosi also mentioned the Giants as having interest in Cabrera, presumably to play the keystone as well. The "perception" around baseball, per ESPN's Buster Olney, is that the Indians are prepared to move Cabrera before the deadline.

Carlos Gonzalez (ankle, knee) is out of the Rockies' starting lineup Wednesday against the Cubs.

CarGo was limping around the visitors clubhouse at Wrigley Field before Wednesday night's game. He rolled his ankle on Saturday and also has some left knee soreness.

Cubs acquired LHP Felix Doubront from the Cubs for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Doubront posted a rough 6.07 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 59 1/3 innings this season for Boston and asked for a trade request when the Red Sox pulled him from the rotation. He has good raw stuff and should get a chance to start in Chicago, but the lefty remains a poor fantasy bet.
Jul 30 - 5:48 PM

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he was never close to trading outfielder Oscar Taveras.

Taveras was floated as a possible centerpiece for trades involving players like David Price and Jon Lester, but the Cardinals got Justin Masterson from the Indians on Wednesday afternoon for outfield prospect James Ramsey and appear to be done dealing. According to Miklasz, the Cards' GM was "amused by the speculation that had him moving Taveras." Now if only manager Mike Matheny would play the ultra-talented 21-year-old on a regular basis.

Dallas Keuchel tossed his fourth complete game of the season in Wednesday's 8-1 rout of the A's.

Keuchel was fantastic, allowing only four hits (and one run) over his nine frames. The only run that Oakland scored was on a Josh Donaldson solo homer in the top of the second inning. Keuchel struck out five and now boasts a 2.97 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 104/33 K/BB ratio through 136 1/3 innings this season. The Orioles have expressed interest in acquiring him before Thursday's July 31 trade deadline, but Houston seems likely to keep the blossoming 26-year-old southpaw.

Matt Harvey (elbow) has been cleared to begin throwing off a mound next week.

Harvey was hoping to hop on a mound in June, but the Mets decided to play it safe and nixed that idea. The right-hander could get some innings in a fall instructional league but won't return to the majors until 2015.
Jul 30 - 4:56 PM

Avisail Garcia (shoulder) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment Friday at Triple-A Charlotte.

Garcia will start out playing designated hitter before eventually shifting to the outfield. The White Sox are expected to take it slowly with the 23-year-old, who tore his left shoulder labrum in early April. He could be activated around late August if all goes well.

Nate Jones underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday.

Jones had been out since the first week of the season because of a lower back injury and apparently tore his UCL while rehabbing. The 28-year-old right-handed reliever will be sidelined for the majority of 2015.
