Red Sox signed OF/DH Jonny Gomes to a two-year, $10 million contract.

It's probably more than most were expecting him to get, but there's no doubt that Gomes can be a weapon if used correctly. The 32-year-old has put up an impressive .894 OPS in his career versus left-handed pitching and belted 18 homers in 2012 for the A's. It will often be an adventure with him in left field defensively, but his bat is well suited for the Green Monster. The Sox seem likely to get a left-handed bat to pair with him.

Joc Pederson singled, doubled, and scored a run in two at-bats in Wednesday's Cactus League opener.

Pederson figures to be the Dodgers' starting center fielder on Opening Day. He recorded only four singles in 28 at-bats last September, but that was his first taste of big league competition and his playing time was spotty. The Dodgers have high expectations for the 22-year-old, who is a potential 20-HR/20-SB candidate.

Raisel Iglesias, making his spring training debut, surrendered two unearned runs in a loss against the Indians on Wednesday.

Iglesias allowed a single, walked two, and uncorked two wild pitches. He was also hurt by a fielding error from third baseman Neftali Soto. That's obviously not the first impression Iglesias wanted to make, but he'll have plenty of time to right the ship. The Reds like his arsenal and see him as a starting pitcher though he was used mostly as a reliever in Cuba.

Jose Iglesias told reporters that he "ran full bore" for the first time in Wednesday's game.

Iglesias played three innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League tilt against the Orioles. He grounded out in both of his at-bats, but the throw only got him by about a half-a-step each time. "Three weeks from now, I will beat those," the shortstop said. He missed the entire 2014 season because of dual stress fractures in his shins.
Mar 4 - 5:01 PM

Mike Minor has been scratched from his scheduled Grapefruit League debut Sunday against the Astros due to tightness in his left (throwing) shoulder.

Yikes. There isn't much more information yet from the Braves, who will likely have Minor visit a specialist within the next few days. Minor put up a disappointing 4.77 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 25 starts last season, but the 27-year-old left-hander seemed like a decent bounceback candidate for 2015. He posted a 3.21 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 181/46 K/BB ratio across 204 2/3 innings in 2013. Atlanta owes him $5.6 million this year.
Mar 4 - 4:44 PM

Nick Castellanos hit a two-run homer in the Tigers' 5-4 win over the Orioles on Wednesday.

The hand contusion that knocked Castellanos out of Tuesday's game obviously wasn't a lingering issue. The sophomore hit cleanup for the Tigers today, though he'll probably open the regular season in the seventh spot in the lineup if everyone is healthy.
Mar 4 - 4:38 PM

Carlos Beltran (elbow) will make his Grapefruit League debut on Friday.

The Yankees are understandably easing Beltran into things this spring, as he turns 38 in April and is coming back from surgery to remove loose pieces and a bone spur from his right elbow. He's hoping for better results in his second season in the Bronx.
Mar 4 - 3:42 PM

Making his exhibition debut, Alex Rodriguez singled and walked in his three plate appearances Wednesday versus the Phillies.

Rodriguez swung through Kevin Slowey's first two fastballs in the first before getting a third at 89-mph and sending a little liner into left field. He grounded out on the first pitch of his second at-bat and then walked on a full count before getting pulled for a pinch-runner in the sixth inning. Rodriguez's bat didn't exactly look fast in the game, but he came through day one just fine.
Mar 4 - 3:42 PM

Josh Harrison exited Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays with left ankle discomfort.

Harrison led off the game with a single, but was later doubled off second base and then departed. No word yet on the severity of the injury. The Pirates should provide an update on his status soon.
Mar 4 - 2:35 PM

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) is likely to make his Grapefruit League debut on March 12 against the Braves.

The Yankees have yet to make an official announcement. Tanaka made it through another bullpen session Wednesday morning -- throwing about 30 pitches in all -- and hasn't reported any issues with his elbow. The Yankees expect him to begin the season in the rotation, but he remains a very risky investment in fantasy leagues.
Mar 4 - 12:37 PM

Rusney Castillo will miss at least one week with a left oblique strain.

Castillo felt some pain in his side during Tuesday's game and was examined by team doctors Wednesday morning. He appeared relieved at the diagnosis, but he'll still have to miss some time. Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley, Jr. will get most of the playing time in center field for now.
Mar 4 - 12:07 PM

The Athletics have decided to move Coco Crisp to left field.

The move is designed at keeping Crisp healthy. The 35-year-old has appeared in 232 games in left field during his career, most recently in 2012. The A's plan to platoon Sam Fuld and Craig Gentry in center field.
