Athletics designated RHP Sandy Rosario for assignment.

Rosario was acquired from the Red Sox on Wednesday, but was released to clear room on the 40-man roster. He shouldn't have a problem finding a team willing to give him a shot at a bullpen job.

Andre Ethier is back in the Dodgers' lineup for Game 5 of the NLCS against the Cubs on Wednesday.

Per Eric Stephen on Twitter, it's the first time that Ethier has started back-to-back games in the 2017 calendar. The full lineup goes Chris Taylor SS Cody Bellinger 1B Justin Turner 3B Yasiel Puig RF Andre Ethier LF Curtis Granderson CF Yasmani Grandal C Chase Utley 2B and Alex Wood on the mound.

Yankees infield prospect Gleyber Torres has returned to hitting in the cage.

Torres made the announcement on his Twitter account, and posted a video of him ripping line drives in an indoor cage. While hitting in the cage isn't the same thing as resuming game activities or close, it's still an excellent sign for his chances to play early in 2018. This is still one of -- if not the -- best prospects in baseball.

Ben Zobrist is out of the lineup for Game 4 of the NLCS against the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Jayson Heyward is also out of the lineup for the Cubs against southpaw Alex Wood for the Dodgers. The Cubs will go with Albert Almora CF, Kyle Schwarber LF, Kris Bryant 3B, Anthony Rizzo 1B, Willson Contreras C, Addison Russell SS, Javy Baez 2B, Jon Jay RF, and Jake Arrieta on the mound.

Former Twins manager Ron Gardenhire interviewed for the Red Sox managerial opening on Wednesday.

Gardenhire spent 2017 as the bench coach for the Diamondbacks. He joins Alex Cora and former Tigers' manager Brad Ausmus as candidates who have interviewed for the position. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has said he does not have a timetable for when he'll make a decision on the job.

Tony La Russa and the Diamondbacks have officially parted ways.

The writing was on the wall last winter when the Diamondbacks restructured their front office and demoted La Russa from chief baseball officer to "chief baseball analyst and advisor." He had a nearly four-year run in Arizona, after spending over three decades as a manager of the White Sox (1979-1986), Athletics (1986-1995), and Cardinals (1996-2011). "I am grateful to everyone in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization for the opportunity to complete my baseball education," La Russa said in a statement Wednesday.

MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports that the Twins will not exercise their $6.5 million club option on left-handed reliever Glen Perkins.

Perkins will get a $750,000 buyout instead. It was a no-brainer decision for the Twins after the 34-year-old southpaw surrendered six earned runs on five walks and eight hits over just 5 2/3 innings this season. He's battled serious shoulder problems for the past couple of years and there is talk that he might retire.
Oct 18 - 2:12 PM

Brian McCann will start at catcher and bat ninth in Game 5 of the ALCS on Wednesday against the Yankees.

It's the same exact starting lineup the Astros deployed in Game 4 of the ALCS: George Springer CF, Josh Reddick RF, Jose Altuve 2B, Carlos Correa SS, Yulieski Gurriel 1B, Alex Bregman 3B, Carlos Beltran DH, Marwin Gonzalez LF, Brian McCann C. Dallas Keuchel will be on the mound for Houston, facing off against Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka.
Oct 18 - 2:01 PM

Chase Headley is serving as the Yankees' DH and batting ninth in Game 5 of the ALCS on Wednesday against the Astros.

Matt Holliday started at DH in Game 1 of the ALCS against Dallas Keuchel, who is also pitching Game 5 for the Astros, but Headley will get the nod here. The full lineup for New York: Brett Gardner LF, Aaron Judge RF, Gary Sanchez C, Didi Gregorius SS, Aaron Hicks CF, Starlin Castro 2B, Greg Bird 1B, Todd Frazier 3B, Chase Headley DH. Masahiro Tanaka will be on the mound.
Oct 18 - 1:17 PM

Willson Contreras (forearm) is expected to be ready for Game 4 of the NLCS on Wednesday.

Contreras made an early exit from Tuesday's Game 3 loss to the Dodgers after taking a Mike Montgomery pitch off his forearm in the top of the eighth inning. Barring significant overnight swelling, the 25-year-old catcher should be near the heart of the Cubs' order on Wednesday with the season on the line. Los Angeles leads 3-0 in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series.
Oct 18 - 8:54 AM

Yu Darvish worked 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball Tuesday as the Dodgers beat the Cubs in Game 3 of the NLCS.

Darvish gave up an opposite-field solo homer to Kyle Schwarber in the bottom of the first inning but settled in nicely from there, needing just 81 total pitches to secure 19 outs. He struck out seven and issued only one walk. Darvish also tallied his first career postseason RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth. That manager Dave Roberts let the longtime American Leaguer hit for himself in that spot is indicative of how sharp he looked. Darvish boasts a 1.59 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, and 14/1 K/BB ratio in 11 1/3 innings (two starts) this postseason and Los Angeles leads 3-0 in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series.
Oct 18 - 12:43 AM

Chris Taylor hit a solo homer and an RBI triple Tuesday in the Dodgers' 6-1 NLCS Game 3 defeat of the Cubs.

Chicago struck first on a Kyle Schwarber solo shot in the bottom of the first, but Andre Ethier answered with a solo blast of his own in the top of the second and then Taylor went to work, giving Los Angeles the lead and a cushion with his dinger in the third and triple in the fifth. The versatile 27-year-old boasts a 1.019 OPS with two home runs, four RBI, and six runs scored through six postseason games. And the Dodgers are now one win away from sweeping the Cubs in the National League Championship Series and advancing to their first World Series since 1988.
