Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com reports that the Indians and Diamondbacks have talked about a possible Asdrubal Cabrera-for-Trevor Bauer swap.

The two clubs have been in talks for about two weeks and they appear to have escalated at the Winter Meetings, though it's not clear if a deal is close. However, both sides would get want they want here, as the Diamondbacks want a shortstop and the Indians would love to turn Cabrera into some younger pieces with upside. Bauer struggled in his first taste of the majors in 2012 and some in the organization appeared to have soured on him, but he has a chance to be an impact arm.

Justin Verlander worked eight innings of one-run ball Sunday in the Tigers' 6-1 win over the Dodgers.

Verlander was in vintage form against the best team in baseball, yielding just two hits and one walk while striking out nine Los Angeles batters. The one run against him came on a solo shot by new Dodgers outfielder Curtis Granderson in the top of the sixth inning. Verlander, 34, now stands 9-8 on the season with a 3.96 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 159/64 K/BB ratio over 159 frames. He'll face the White Sox in Chicago next.

Dexter Fowler (back) is back in the Cardinals' lineup Sunday.

Fowler didn't play Saturday due to a sore back, but he's feeling well enough a day later to give it a go. He's in center field and batting cleanup against Ivan Nova and the Pirates. The Cards are also giving the recently recalled Stephen Piscotty a start, as Tommy Pham is receiving a day off.

Trea Turner (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.

It's unclear how many rehab games Turner will need, but he's missed nearly two months of action so he'll need to knock some rust off. Still, a return before the end of the month, or perhaps even before the end of the week, would seem to be doable. Turner still ranks as the No. 4 shortstop in fantasy this season even after all the missed time.

Robert Murray of FanRagSports.com was told by a Blue Jays source that the club is "open" to a contract extension for Marco Estrada.

A new deal might not happen until the offseason, but it sounds like Estrada remaining in Toronto is a pretty decent possibility. The righty was claimed on revocable waivers by the Yankees, according to Murray, but the move was made to block another team from getting him and that deadline has passed, so Estrada is staying put. It's been an up-and-down season for the 34-year-old, as he holds a 5.09 ERA but has also struck out over a batter per inning.

Brian McCann (knee) is "almost a certainty" to be activated from the disabled list Thursday, according to Astros manager A.J. Hinch.

It's the first day the catcher is eligible to be activated. Evan Gattis (concussion) looks to be in line for a return by the end of the week, as well, so the Astros should have their top two catchers back in the fold soon.
Aug 20 - 12:59 PM

Lance McCullers (back) threw a three-inning, 45-pitch simulated game Sunday.

McCullers could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment this week. The Astros have yet to decide how many rehab starts the right-hander will require, but it will be at least a couple. McCullers has been on the shelf since late July with a back injury.
Aug 20 - 12:56 PM

Evan Gattis (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday.

Gattis will catch 6-7 innings Tuesday, serve as a designated hitter Wednesday and then catch again Thursday. Assuming that all goes well, he would seem likely to be activated next weekend. Gattis has been out for most of August with post-concussion symptoms.
Aug 20 - 12:51 PM

Carlos Correa (thumb) will take batting practice on the field Tuesday.

Correa took BP off a pitching machine Sunday and "looked great" and "felt great" according to Astros manager A.J. Hinch. Things are progressing well for the shortstop as he works his way back from a torn ligament in his left thumb and it's looking like he has a shot to be activated on September 1.
Aug 20 - 12:49 PM

Clayton Kershaw (back) could potentially rejoin the Dodgers' rotation on September 1.

The way things are lined up, the earlier Kershaw might make it back is August 31, but the club waiting another day when rosters expand is more likely. Kershaw will throw a three-inning simulated game Monday and begin a rehab assignment next weekend. It sounds like it may be the only rehab start he needs before rejoining the rotation, assuming all goes well. Kershaw has been out for the last four weeks with a lower back strain.
Aug 20 - 12:40 PM

Yoan Moncada (shin) remained out of the White Sox' lineup Sunday.

Moncada has sat out two straight due to shin splints in his right leg. Yolmer Sanchez is handling second base again.
Aug 20 - 12:36 PM

Garrett Richards (biceps) faced hitters on Sunday.

It's the first time he's done so since he landed on the disabled list with a nerve issue in his right biceps muscle all the way back in early April. Richards could rejoin the Angels' rotation sometime next month, although obviously there's no clear timetable yet.
