Cubs re-signed 3B Ian Stewart to a one-year, $2 million contract.

Stewart could earn an additional $500,000 with incentives. He's guaranteed a little less than what he figured to make in arbitration, but he could earn a little more if he reaches his incentives. It's a pretty fair deal all around and a risk the Cubs can afford to take. Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune hears that the deal is not guaranteed and Stewart could be released if he doesn't make the team in the spring.

Hanley Ramirez is not in the Red Sox starting lineup Wednesday afternoon against the Tigers.

Travis Shaw will start at first base and Aaron Hill will start at third base. This is just a day of rest for Hanley, who's batting .306/.411/.645 so far in July.

Padres placed 3B Yangervis Solarte on the family medical emergency leave list.

He'll be gone for the next 3-7 days to handle a private matter. Solarte has registered a cool .856 OPS with 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 61 games this season.

Ichiro Suzuki is out of the Marlins' starting lineup on Wednesday against the Phillies.

Ichiro is three hits from 3,000, but the Marlins don't want to push the 42-year-old too hard. He went 1-for-5 with a single in Tuesday's 5-0 defeat of Philadelphia.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker suggested late Tuesday that he's considering a change at closer.

Papelbon blew his second straight save opportunity on Tuesday night against the Indians, yielding three runs on two walks and two hits. He did not record an out. "It’s too soon after," Baker said in his postgame press conference. "I mean, that’s his job. That’s what he’s getting paid for. I don’t know. We just have to go back to the drawing board. It’s too early to say after the game." Washington was heavily interested in Aroldis Chapman before he went to the Cubs. Maybe there's a plan now that involves Andrew Miller. If no outside upgrade is made and Papelbon's struggles continue, Shawn Kelley could become the guy.

Adam Duvall went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three total RBI in Tuesday's 9-7 loss to the Giants.

Duvall hit a two-run shot off Matt Cain with one out in the sixth inning for home run No. 1, then followed it up with a solo blast in the eighth for home run No. 2. He was on-deck at the time Jay Bruce whiffed to end the game with a runner on in the top of the ninth. Bruce represented the tying run. These were Duvall's first two home runs since the All-Star break and give him 25 for the season as a whole. He owns a .247/.294/.545 triple-slash over 336 at-bats.

Josh Reddick went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Athletics past the Rangers 6-3 on Tuesday.

Reddick hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and added an RBI single an inning later. It was a nice little showcase for the 29-year-old, who has been the subject of trade rumors in recent days. His .296/.373/.442 line has certainly increased his value, as have his seven homers, 27 RBI, 30 runs scored and four steals this year. We'll know soon enough whether the big night was his last as a member of the A's.

Joey Gallo hit his first home run of the season in Tuesday's loss to the Athletics.

So it begins. Gallo muscled a Sonny Gray pitch to left-center in the fifth inning to get the Rangers on the board. It was his only hit in four at-bats, and he struck out in two of the four at-bats. That's a typical Gallo night, as he'll strike out plenty but he hits it plenty far when he makes contact. The power makes him fantasy relevant, but the propensity to swing and miss makes him a high-risk, high-reward player.

Scooter Gennett went 2-for-3 with three RBI, a stolen base and a run scored as the Brewers used a late surge to down the Diamondbacks 9-4 on Tuesday.

As he did seemingly all night, Gennett had a large part in the Brewers' five-run eighth inning that sealed the win. The second baseman got the scoring started in the inning with a two-run single, and he later came around to score. Gennett has been finding ways to contribute in recent days, and the 26-year-old is hitting .264/.319/.414 with nine homers, 33 RBI, 36 runs scored and six steals in 78 games overall.

Rich Hill (finger) is tentatively scheduled to return to the A's rotation Sunday in Cleveland.

Hill first has to make it through a bullpen session Friday. He hasn't appeared in a game since July 17 because of a blister on his left middle finger, but his recent throwing sessions with a protective cover have gone well. The veteran southpaw is one of Oakland's top trade chips leading up to the August 1 deadline, boasting a 2.25 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 90/28 K/BB ratio in 76 innings this season.
Jul 27 - 12:29 AM

Tyler Skaggs showed no rust in carving up the Royals on Tuesday, allowing just three hits over seven scoreless innings in the Angels' 13-0 victory.

Making his first major league start since July 31, 2014, Skaggs was brilliant, needing just 88 pitches to get through his seven innings. He walked one and struck out five before exiting. The 25-year-old, who is working his way back from elbow and shoulder issues, had similar success in minor league rehab starts leading up to Tuesday, so it wasn't a total surprise, but dominating Triple-A opponents and flaying the defending World Series champs are two different things. Skaggs is definitely worth a mixed league flyer, and we'll get a better idea of what we're looking at when he squares off with the potent Red Sox offense on Sunday.
Jul 27 - 12:17 AM

Andrew Miller struck out two in a scoreless inning of work to earn his ninth save as the Yankees bested the Astros 6-3 on Tuesday.

Miller is now 2-for-2 converting save chances since taking over for the departed Aroldis Chapman. What happens with the Yankees' bullpen will be fascinating to watch over the next few days, as the club seems intent on keeping Miller but would almost certainly deal him for the right return. With a 1.39 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 77/7 K/BB ratio in 45 1/3 innings, he won't come cheap.
