Cubs signed RHP Andrew Carpenter to a minor league contract.

He's been given an invitation to spring training. Carpenter had a brief stint in the majors with the Blue Jays in 2012 and produced a 3.09 ERA and nice 72/21 K/BB ratio over 84 1/3 minor league innings.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi and Ken Rosenthal report that the Angels, Blue Jays and Tigers have been in contact with Rangers regarding Joakim Soria.

The Angels would be the best landing spot for Soria from a fantasy perspective, as he would figure to have the best chance to remain a closer. Soria is making a reasonable $5.5 million this season with a $7 million club option for 2015, so it's no surprise that he's drawing interest. He's put up a 2.76 ERA and ridiculous 40/4 K/BB ratio over 29 1/3 innings this season.

Cardinals claimed C George Kottaras off waivers from the Indians.

The Cards needed some depth at catcher following the Yadier Molina (thumb) injury, and Kottaras makes sense as a stop-gap. The 31-year-old is a career .216/.326/.415 hitter but did slug three homers over 10 games with the Tribe. He figures to share time with Tony Cruz while Molina is out, with Audry Perez heading back to Triple-A Memphis.

Billy Hamilton is back in the Reds' lineup Friday.

Hamilton didn't start Thursday after tweaking his left hamstring, though he was able to pinch-hit. The speedster is back in there Friday, though it remains to be seen whether he'll take it easy on the bases in order to protect the hammy.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Mariners recently scouted Marlon Byrd.

The M's are in the market for a right-handed power bat, and Byrd certainly fits the profile. The 36-year-old has slugged 18 homers and driven in 52 runs this season while sporting a .261/.313/.481 batting line. He's in the first year of a two-year, $16 million contract with the Phillies.

Rockies activated OF Carlos Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list.

CarGo had surgery last month to remove a benign tumor from his left index finger, but he hit .385/.467/1.077 with a couple homers during four rehab games to show he was ready. He'll be moved to right field upon his return. Gonzalez was hitting a disappointing .255/.307/.449 over 52 games before the injury but should improve upon that line with his finger no longer an issue.

Jonathan Papelbon said Wednesday that it would be a "no-brainer" to waiver his no-trade clause in order to be dealt to a contender.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said that Papelbon has "never expressed to me that he's been unhappy," but he's not surprised the closer is willing to be dealt. "Why wouldn't players want to play on a contending team?" the GM added. "It's really rather simple." Papelbon is owed about $19 million through the end of next season and has a $13 million vesting option for 2016, so the Phils will surely have to eat some money in order to make a trade happen. However, Papelbon probably does look attractive to a contender with a 1.24 ERA and 22 saves in 24 opportunities.

Clayton Kershaw rolled into the All-Star break with another dominant performance in Thursday's complete game victory over the Padres, racking up 11 strikeouts and allowing only one run.

Kershaw's only mistake came in the form of Chase Headley's sixth inning solo homer, one of three San Diego hits; they also drew one walk. But it wasn't all good news: Kershaw's scoreless innings streak ended at 41 2/3 when Headley's drive left the yard, the first run the left-hander had allowed since June 13 against Arizona. It was the longest single-season scoreless streak since Brandon Webb hurled 42 straight in 2007. Orel Hershiser has the most in the major league divisional era with 59. Kershaw is on his way to another Cy Young award with a 10-2 record and 1.83 ERA in 14 outings.

Torii Hunter finished 3-for-6 with two RBI singles and a solo home run as the Tigers walked all over the Royals in a win on Thursday.

Hunter has turned his season around with a hot start to July. Thursday's three-hit performance marked his sixth multi-hit game in nine games this month. The outfielder now has 12 home runs, 52 RBI, and a .276/.298/.455 slash line.

Mike Trout went 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBI, and three runs scored as the Angels routed the Rangers on Thursday.

Trout singled in a run in the second, then blasted a three-run home run in the third inning. Shortly into the season's fourth month, Trout has been making a strong case to win his first career AL MVP award. The 22-year-old has 21 home runs, 68 RBI, 10 stolen bases, and a .310/.401/.602 slash line.
Jul 10 - 11:24 PM

Asdrubal Cabrera ripped a game-tying three-run triple in the seventh inning, helping the Indians come from behind and win against the Yankees on Thursday.

He would later score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. Cabrera also walked and singled in five plate appearances on the evening. The shortstop has a mediocre .251/.312/.398 slash line with eight home runs and 37 RBI on the season.

Andrew McCutchen did a little of everything on Thursday, logging two hits, knocking in two runs, scoring twice, and stealing two bases as the Pirates trampled the Cardinals in a 9-1 victory.

The cornerstone of the Pirates' franchise showed why he's now a five-time All-Star and the defending NL MVP. McCutchen singled, then stole second and third base before scoring in the first inning. He singled in a run and later scored in the fifth, and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. McCutchen owns an impressive .318/.415/.539 slash line with 14 home runs, 18 RBI, and 15 stolen bases.
