Rays acquired OF Wil Myers, RHP Jake Odorizzi, LHP Mike Montgomery and 3B Patrick Leonard from the Royals for RHPs James Shields and Wade Davis and a player to be named later.

Myers, 22, batted .314/.387/.600 with 37 homers and 109 RBI over 134 games in the Royals' minor league system last season and was recently named Baseball America's minor league player of the year. Arguably the best hitting prospect in the game, Myers projects to open 2013 with the Rays in a starting role and has the potential to add some much needed power to their lineup. It hurts to give up Shields and Davis, but Myers is quite a get.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Major League Baseball is expected to make a decision regarding Josh Hamilton's situation prior to Opening Day.

Heyman notes that "a suspension of some length" is expected following Hamilton's relapse, but "it isn't known what the resolution will be." The feeling is that it could potentially range from 25 games to a full season, although the MLBPA is arguably for only a 15-game ban. Hamilton is already slated to miss the beginning of the season while recording from surgery in early February to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Thursday that he could shorten Kevin Gausman's appearances in the final two weeks of camp to prepare him to possibly be used as a reliever.

Gausman threw one inning in Thursday's game and it appears he may continue to be used in short spurts rather than be stretched out more. "Until everything shakes out, I want him to be ready to do both things," Showalter said of Gausman. It's really disappointing news, as this is the first we've heard of the possibility of Gausman potentially not being a part of the rotation. He's out-pitched Ubaldo Jimenez this spring, but it sounds like the latter might beat him out for a rotation spot, anyway. Gausman is a potential breakout fantasy performer if he's given a starting job, so keep close tabs on this one.

Brady Aiken underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday.

Last year's No. 1 overall pick left his first outing with IMG Academy last Thursday with an arm injury, and now everyone's worst fears have been realized. Aiken, of course, didn't sign after being picked by the Astros but had a shot to again be the No. 1 pick in 2015. The young lefty will now be sidelined for the next year-plus, but it's still possible he's a first-round pick in June.

Coco Crisp (elbow) could return to game action on Saturday.

The cortisone injection he was given Tuesday for his sore right elbow must have worked, as Crisp unexpectedly did some workouts prior to Thursday's contest and could be back in the lineup Saturday. The A's are moving Crisp to left field this season in hopes of keeping him on the field, but he'll remain a health risk no matter where he plays.

Derek Holland (shoulder) is expected to start the Rangers' home opener on April 10 versus the Astros.

Holland is over the minor bout of shoulder soreness he dealt with earlier in camp, but the Rangers will play it safe with him and hold him back until the fifth game of the season. "There are two opening days," manager Jeff Banister said. Yovani Gallardo will get the ball on April 6.

Yovani Gallardo will start Opening Day against the Athletics on April 6.

He'll square off against Oakland's Sonny Gray. Yu Darvish would have gotten the assignment if he was healthy, but Gallardo gets the call after coming over from the Brewers over the winter. The veteran right-hander posted a 3.51 ERA across 32 starts last season.

Sean Doolittle (shoulder) is set to begin playing catch Friday.

It will be a big step for Doolittle, who was diagnosed with a slight tear in his rotator cuff back about two months ago. If he continues to make progress, a return in early May is realistic.
Mar 26 - 5:46 PM

Josh Reddick (oblique) will take two rounds of batting practice Thursday.

It will be his first time taking batting practice since his oblique injury. The 28-year-old has missed most of the month, so he's cutting it very close, but there's still a chance that he could be ready for the start of the season.

Garrett Richards (knee) will pitch in another minor league game on Saturday.

Richards, who is coming back from petellar tendon surgery, threw four hitless innings in a minor league game on Monday. At this rate, he's not going to pitch in a Cactus League game by the end of camp. The good news is that he's progressing as planned. Look for him to join the Angels' rotation in mid-to-late April.
Mar 26 - 5:12 PM

Jon Lester (arm) threw 54 pitches Thursday in a minor league game.

Lester struck out three of the 12 batters he faced while giving up one hit and one walk. The southpaw was scratched from Saturday's scheduled start due to a tired arm, but he said that Thursday was "good" and a "normal day." He will make another minor league start next week, likely stretching out to 75-80 pitches, which should put him track to start Opening Night against the Cardinals on April.

Victor Martinez said that he dealt with some soreness in his surgically-repaired knee on Thursday.

V-Mart homered Thursday, but Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that he felt something in the knee while stretching to try to beat out a throw to sixth base in the first inning. The 36-year-old said it's just something he will likely have to deal with. It's not the best sign, but it doesn't sound like something that will impact his readiness for the season.
