Angels signed INF Luis Rodriguez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Rodriguez batted just .296/.389/.452 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI in 422 plate appearances this summer for Triple-A Tacoma -- an affiliate of the Mariners. He could land a spot on Anaheim's Opening Day roster.

Jose Fernandez (elbow) will throw off a mound on Sunday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery.

He's slated to throw 15 fastballs during the session. Fernandez will be built up slowly from there, eventually mixing breaking balls into his mound work. The Marlins will obviously proceed extra cautiously with their young ace, as Fernandez isn't expected back until mid-June at the earliest. He had Tommy John surgery last May.

Padres manager Bud Black on Friday listed Wil Myers as an option to hit leadoff.

"(Yangervis) Solarte, (Wil) Venable, (Cameron) Maybin and Myers – let’s start there," Black said. Myers is the only one of the names Black listed who's guaranteed a spot in the lineup, so it's a reasonable guess that he's the top candidate to bat leadoff. While not a prototypical leadoff hitter, Myers did sport a nice .354 on-base percentage during his American League Rookie of the Year-winning 2013 campaign. Solarte could hit leadoff should he win the third base job, but Will Middlebrooks is the favorite to start there.

Blue Jays signed OF Dayan Viciedo to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The deal will pay Viciedo $2.5 million if he makes the team out of spring. Viciedo can be a useful player against left-handed pitching, but his days as a viable everyday starting outfielder have gone. Viciedo hit 21 homers last season, so at the very least he can provide some additional pop for the Jays.

Carlos Gonzalez (knee) will begin running the bases next week.

CarGo is recovering from surgery to repair the patella tendon in his left knee last August. The outfielder won't be in the lineup when Cactus League games begin on Wednesday, but he doesn't appear to be too far away from game action. Assuming things go well, Gonzalez will be in the Rockies' lineup on Opening Day.
Feb 28 - 6:31 PM

Troy Tulowitzki (hip) will run the bases next week.

Tulo is recovering from surgery to repair his torn left hip labrum, and the Rockies are taking it slow with their superstar as he returns to action. Tulowitzki has already been taking infield practice this spring, another good sign. Assuming his progress continues, Tulo should be ready to roll for Opening Day.
Feb 28 - 6:29 PM

Matt Wieters (elbow) is set to start at catcher for Sunday's intrasquad game.

It will be the first time Wieters has been behind the dish since last May. While he'll serve as the backstop, Wieters still won't be allowed to throw at 100 percent until March 17. He's slated to catch two innings in Sunday's game. Everything is trending toward the 28-year-old being ready for Opening Day.

The White Sox announced Saturday that Chris Sale suffered an avulsion fracture on his right foot in an accident at his home on Friday.

The early diagnosis is that he's expected to miss three weeks. While it sounds that he avoided a significant injury, it could put his availability for Opening Day in jeopardy. The team will wait for the swelling to subside before determining his status.
Feb 28 - 1:09 PM

Michael Saunders underwent successful surgery on Friday to remove 60% of the meniscus in his left knee and is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks.

Initially, the team feared he'd be sidelined until around the All-Star break, though the tear wasn't as bad as they had feared and they were able to get by simply trimming the meniscus. With a return set around mid-April, the Jays are no longer forced to scrounge up a suitable replacement and will roll with in-house options to cover left field until Saunders is recovered.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Athletics and Blue Jays are among the teams talking to Dayan Viciedo.

Both clubs have an opening in left field following Michael Saunders' (knee) injury, so it makes sense. Viciedo is a poor defender and has a career .298 OPS, but he's also slugged 60 homers over the last three seasons. His ideal landing spot for fantasy purposes would be in Toronto, where his power would play well at Rogers Centre.
Feb 27 - 5:44 PM

Melvin Upton has been diagnosed with sesamoiditis in his left foot and is expected to miss all of spring training.

Sesamoiditis is inflammation in the bone behind the ball of his foot. Upton will be in a cast for two weeks and a walking boot for 4-6 weeks after that. He won't be allowed to resume baseball activity until at least early April and is expected to be out until at least May 1. It's a tough break for a guy in desperate need of a bounce-back season after hitting just .198/.279/.314 in his first two seasons with the Braves. Eury Perez, Eric Young and Zoilo Almonte are options to fill in for Upton in center field.
Feb 27 - 3:54 PM

Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports that the Angels are not expecting a decision regarding Josh Hamilton's impending suspension anytime soon.

Fletcher adds that it "could be weeks" and the club is "hoping by Opening Day" a decision will be made. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi have reported that Hamilton is likely facing a suspension of at least 25 games following his drug relapse, but it's a complicated process and new commissioner Rob Manfred could show the outfielder some compassion given his efforts to remain sober.
