Angels signed INF Luis Rodriguez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Rodriguez batted just .296/.389/.452 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI in 422 plate appearances this summer for Triple-A Tacoma -- an affiliate of the Mariners. He could land a spot on Anaheim's Opening Day roster.

Angels placed RHP Garrett Richards on the 60-day disabled list with a torn left patellar tendon.

Thursday's MRI results on Richards' knee revealed a torn patellar tendon. This was the worst case scenario, but it was also expected. Richards was shaken to the core after the gruesome injury -- suffered when he attempted to cover second base on Wednesday and his knee gave out -- and you can understand why: Richards was a darkhorse Cy Young candidate, entering Wednesday's start 13-4 with a 2.53 ERA, collecting 164 strikeouts in 167 innings. "Surgery is tentatively scheduled for next week," the Angels twitter feed passes along. "Richards is anticipated to miss 6 to 9 months."

Alex Cobb limited the Tigers to two hits over seven innings for the win as the Rays beat the Tigers 1-0 on Thursday despite getting one-hit.

The Rays are the fourth team this year to win a game in which they were one-hit. However, they did it despite never drawing a single walk. That makes them just the third team since 1914, according to Baseball-Reference data, to win a game in which they had one hit and no walks, joining the 1971 Orioles (on a Frank Robinson homer) and the 2006 White Sox (on a Jim Thome homer). The Rays got their run in the first after Eugenio Suarez's error allowed Desmond Jennings to reach and Brandon Guyer tripled. Cobb, Brad Boxberger and Jake McGee made it hold up, combining on a four-hitter. Cobb is now 9-6 with a 3.01 ERA this season.

Will Middlebrooks (hamstring) is out again Thursday.

The third baseman is still being bothered by tightness in his right hamstring. He's considered day-to-day.
Aug 21 - 3:50 PM

Mike Napoli is out of the Red Sox starting lineup again on Thursday due to back spasms.

The minor back injury also kept him out of action on Wednesday night. He is considered day-to-day.
Aug 21 - 3:49 PM

David Ortiz (back) is not in the Red Sox starting lineup on Thursday night against the Angels.

Ortiz went 4-for-4 and clubbed his 30th home run of the season on Wednesday, but he had to be lifted early due to general soreness. Allen Craig is DHing on Thursday.
Aug 21 - 3:48 PM

Red Sox activated OF Allen Craig from the 15-day disabled list.

Craig is serving as the designated hitter in Thursday's series finale against the Angels. The Red Sox will likely take it easy with the 30-year-old down the stretch this season, given how badly he's struggled since coming off his late-2013 Lisfranc injury.

Brandon McCarthy pitched his fourth career shutout Thusday, allowing four hits and striking out eight in a 3-0 win over the Astros.

The game was played in 2:07, as McCarthy (107) and Dallas Keuchel (96) combined to throw 203 pitches while both notching complete games. McCarthy improved to 5-2 with a 1.90 ERA in eight starts for the Yankees. His previous shutout came last year for the Diamondbacks in a 1-0 win over the Marlins.

Buster Posey (hip) will be back in the Giants' starting lineup on Thursday against the Cubs.

The Giants first have to finish out a suspended game and then will play a full nine innings after that. Posey, who sat out Wednesday after experiencing some discomfort in his left hip, is expected to participate in both.
Aug 21 - 3:05 PM

Javier Baez will play shortstop for the Cubs while Starlin Castro is on the bereavement list.

Castro lost a cousin and three close friends to a car crash Wednesday in the Dominican Republic and could be gone for an entire week. This is a good opportunity for Baez, who has been playing primarily at second base since his promotion to the majors on August 5.

Cubs placed SS Starlin Castro on the bereavement list.

Castro could be out for up to week after losing a cousin and three close friends in a car crash this week in the Dominican Republic. He left the Cubs on Wednesday.
Aug 21 - 1:58 PM

Cubs placed RHP Edwin Jackson on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain.

Jackson was hammered for seven earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings Wednesday in a loss to the Giants, dropping him to 6-14 on the year with a 6.09 ERA. He is owed $22 million over the next two seasons. This is a mess.
