Rays signed RHP Roberto Hernandez to a one-year, $3.25 million contract.

The deal includes $1.85 million in incentives based on innings pitched and relief appearances. Hernandez -- formerly known as Fausto Carmona -- posted a 7.53 ERA in three starts with the Indians in 2012 and owns a 4.64 ERA over seven seasons in the majors. He'll function as depth for the Rays' starting rotation and bullpen.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Dodgers are "trying hard" to land Joaquin Benoit.

Benoit is under contract with the Padres through 2015 and carries a vesting option for 2016, so the San Diego front office isn't fully set on moving him. But the Dodgers need bullpen help and have the farm system to get something done with their division foes.

The Red Sox are "getting swarmed" by Andrew Miller offers, reports USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

"Once he's dealt, dominos will fall," an executive told Nightengale. Presumably, that means teams looking for relievers refuse to move onto second options before Boston chooses a Miller package. You can't blame the Red Sox for being choosy: Miller has been one of the game's best left-handed relievers over the last three years, boasting a 2.78 ERA in 140 appearances. He's been even better in 2014, collecting a 2.34 ERA and 69/13 K/BB ratio over 42 1/3 innings. The Braves, Pirates and Royals have all been connected to the lefty reliever, and ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reported Wednesday that Boston wants a top prospect in return. They have four hours left to find one.

According to FOX Sports' Jon Morosi, the Royals have asked about Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa.

The Royals have also been linked recently to A.J. Burnett as they try to make a minor rotation upgrade. De La Rosa has posted a weak 4.20 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 122 innings this season, but Coors Field is to blame for part of that poor production. The 33-year-old left-hander is scheduled to become a free agent this winter.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Twins have reengaged Kurt Suzuki about an extension.

The initial round of talks didn't get very far, but Rosenthal is now hearing that there's a "reasonable chance it gets done." Suzuki is having a career year offensively at age 30, batting .304/.367/.386 in 347 plate appearances. He signed a bargain one-year, $2.75 million free agent contract with Minnesota last winter.

According to FOX Sports' Jon Morosi, the chances of a David Price trade "have increased."

The Rays have moved closer to contention for a postseason spot over the past month-plus, so the growing thought has been that they might want to hang onto their ace. But the elite starting pitcher market has now centered around Price with Jon Lester already heading to Oakland. The Rays' asking price will likely be sky-high, but pretty much every contending team is seeking a top-tier arm. The Dodgers and Cardinals are among the teams with rumored interest.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports the Phillies and Royals are discussing an A.J. Burnett trade.

"No indication that [a] deal is close," Rosenthal adds. It remains to be seen if Kansas City is amenable to assuming Burnett's player option for 2015, which could pay him as much as $14.25 million if he makes 32 starts. ESPN's Jayson Stark reported earlier this week that the Phillies are telling interested clubs they expect Burnett to retire, and Burnett (4.15 ERA) has echoed that sentiment to teammates. If the Royals expect to remain in contention, they need to improve their rotation somehow. This would help.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Astros have taken Dallas Keuchel off the trade market.

Keuchel threw his fourth complete game of the season on Wednesday against the A's, allowing only four hits and one run over nine innings. The 26-year-old left-hander owns an impressive 2.97 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 104/33 K/BB ratio through 136 1/3 total frames this season. There was no good reason for Houston to trade him.
Jul 31 - 11:00 AM

Twins acquired LHP Tommy Milone from the Athletics for OF Sam Fuld; assigned him to Triple-A Rochester.

Milone was pushed even further down the A's rotation depth chart with Thursday's Jon Lester trade. He'll get new life in Minnesota, which is almost as pitcher-friendly as Oakland. The 27-year-old left-hander had a solid 3.55 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 61/26 K/BB ratio in 96 1/3 innings this season with the Athletics. He will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. It's a decent get for the Twins.
Jul 31 - 10:56 AM

Red Sox acquired OF Yoenis Cespedes from the Athletics for LHP Jon Lester and OF Jonny Gomes.

Cespedes can elect to become a free agent after the 2015 season and the A's stood little chance of locking him up long-term, so they shipped him off to Boston for a three-month ace rental. The 28-year-old Cuban outfielder has massive power -- which should show better at Fenway Park -- and will be an upgrade to Boston's outfield defense both this season and next season. He was hitting .256/.303/.464 with 17 home runs and 67 RBI in 101 games this year for Oakland. The Red Sox also got the A's Round B competitive-balance pick in the 2015 MLB Amateur Draft.
Jul 31 - 10:24 AM

Athletics acquired LHP Jon Lester and OF Jonny Gomes from the Red Sox for OF Yoenis Cespedes.

The A's were unsatisfied with their rotation even after acquiring Jeff Samardzija (and Jason Hammel) from the Cubs, so they got a little more creative and picked up the top ace on the trade market. Lester can become a free agent after the 2014 World Series and is highly doubtful to re-sign with Oakland, but he'll give the club a big boost down the stretch and into October. The 30-year-old left-hander was sporting a 2.52 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 149/32 K/BB ratio in 143 innings this season for Boston. Now he moves to the most pitcher-friendly park in MLB.
Jul 31 - 10:16 AM

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets are "highly doubtful to move" Daniel Murphy.

There has been interest -- most notably from the Nationals -- but Murphy is under contractual control through the 2015 season and so the Mets would have to be overwhelmed by an offer to pull the trigger on a deal. Murphy, 29, is hitting .295/.341/.423 with eight home runs and 11 stolen bases in 105 games this season.
