Yankees sent RHP Jim Miller outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Miller was designated for assignment Wednesday but has cleared waivers and will remain in the organization. The 30-year-old posted a 2.59 ERA and 44/27 K/BB ratio over 48 2/3 innings this past season for the A's.

Pablo Sandoval is out of Wednesday's lineup against the Nationals due to illness.

Tuesday's hero should be back in there following Thursday's scheduled off-day. Joaquin Arias will make the start at the hot corner.

Adam Eaton is dealing with renewed soreness in his left elbow and has returned to Phoenix for an examination.

Bad news. Eaton, who was diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in March, began playing in rehab games earlier this month and felt well enough to return to center field last week. However, the pain has returned. The worst-case scenario would be season-ending Tommy John surgery, but it's not clear if that's a consideration yet. But it's obviously a concern.

Jaime Garcia will undergo surgery on his left shoulder.

No word yet on the exact nature of the procedure, but surgery was always considered a strong possibility. Feel free to drop Garcia in redraft leagues if you haven't already. Tyler Lyons will fill Garcia's spot in the rotation for the time being, but the Cardinals are hoping to have Jake Westbrook (elbow) back from the disabled list soon. Chris Carpenter could be a possibility for the rotation down the road.
May 22 - 12:34 PM

Chase Utley (rib cage) will undergo an MRI on Thursday.

Utley was scratched from Tuesday's lineup after he felt pain and a burning sensation in his right rib cage after taking a swing during batting practice. Rib cage and oblique injuries tend to linger, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him land on the disabled list at this point. Get a backup plan in place in fantasy leagues.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Wednesday that the club has discussed calling up prospect outfielders Yasiel Puig and Joc Pederson.

Very interesting. However, while the Dodgers are struggling to score runs, it's hard to see a great fit for playing time as long as Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, and Carl Crawford are healthy. Puig, 22, is batting .314/.385/.579 with six homers and a .964 OPS through 32 games this season with Double-A Chattanooga. Pederson has been even better, batting .327/.400/.554 with eight homers, 13 stolen bases and a .954 OPS.

Kyle Lohse will not make his next scheduled start on Saturday due to right elbow irritation.

The description of his condition is rather vague, but the Brewers should provide more information soon. Mike Fiers will start in his place Saturday against the Pirates. Lohse allowed four runs in six innings Sunday against the Cardinals and owns a 3.76 ERA and 37/10 K/BB ratio in 55 innings across nine starts this season.

Twins placed 3B Trevor Plouffe on the 7-day disabled list with a concussion.

Plouffe took a knee to the head Tuesday night when he tried to break up a double play with a slide at second base. He'll need to be cleared by MLB doctors before returning to action. The Twins have called up Chris Colabello to take his spot on the active roster.
May 22 - 8:59 AM

Rafael Betancourt (groin) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Wednesday.

Betancourt left Tuesday's game with a tight right groin, an issue which has lingering since late April. He's hoping to avoid the disabled list, but the Rockies may decide that a couple of weeks of rest is the best course of action. Rex Brothers is the likely favorite for saves if Betancourt needs to miss time, but Wilton Lopez could also figure in.

Mike Trout homered in the eighth inning Tuesday to complete his first cycle in the Angels' 12-0 massacre of the Mariners.

Trout struck out in his first at-bat, but he singled, tripled and doubled afterwards before delivered his ninth homer off Lucas Luetge in the eighth. He drove in five runs in all, and he became the youngest player to hit for the cycle since Mel Ott in 1929. Trout has his average up to .293, and he's currently on pace to finish the season with 32 homers, 112 runs scored, 122 RBI and 32 steals.

Alex Gordon went 3-for-4 with a run scored to help the Royals come back and beat the Astros 7-3 on Tuesday.

Gordon is currently enjoying a nine-game hitting streak in which he's hitting .514 (18-for-35) with four doubles. He's now batting .352/.384/.536 through 42 games, and his move to the No. 3 hole seems to be permanent. The Royals' most consistent hitter and one of the hottest hitters in the league, the 29-year-old could be looking at a career year.
May 22 - 1:04 AM

Addison Reed picked up his 16th save on Tuesday in the White Sox' victory over the Red Sox.

Reed's 16 saves now rank behind only Jason Grilli and Mariano Rivera for the league lead, and he's blown just one opportunity on the year. The right-hander owns a 2.14 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, having struck out 24 batters in 21 innings. And after serving up six home runs last season, he's yet to be taken deep thus far. It's shaping up to be a big year for the young righty.
