Red Sox assistant general manager Brian O'Halloran confirmed Wednesday that manager John Farrell wants newly-acquired righty Joel Hanrahan to be the closer.

In other words, the Red Sox will not have a closer controversy going into spring training. Andrew Bailey was acquired last offseason to be the ninth-inning man, but he'll now be pushed into a set-up role alongside the recently-signed Koji Uehara.

Kelly Johnson delivered the game-winning hit to doom his former teammates on Sunday, doubling home Steve Pearce to propel the Orioles to a walk-off 3-2 victory over the Yankees.

It was his lone hit in four at-bats on the day, but certainly proved to be critical. He is seeing extra action at third base after the suspension to Chris Davis, but still represents a poor mixed league fantasy option as he's hitting a putrid .212/.292/.359 with 26 RBI on the season.

Didi Gregorius went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Diamondbacks past the Padres 8-6 on Sunday.

Gregorius has now scored twice in back-to-back games. He added an RBI single in the eighth inning. The shortstop has struggled at the dish this year, batting a meager .211/.286/.351 in 69 games this season.
Sep 14 - 10:28 PM

Clayton Kershaw threw eight innings of two-run ball to lead the Dodgers past the Giants 4-2 on Sunday.

It was an uncharacteristic start for Kershaw, as his seven hits allowed were the most in a start since August 5. More characteristically, the southpaw walked just one while striking out nine. The win moved him to 19-3 with a 1.70 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 219/28 K/BB ratio through 185 1/3 innings this year. There are few superlatives left to say about Kershaw at this point. The Cubs are the next on Kershaw's list, as they'll meet up in Chicago Friday.
Sep 14 - 9:45 PM

Gregorio Petit went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI as the Astros bested the Angels 6-1 Sunday.

Petit hit a three-run shot off Angels starter Hector Santiago in the second inning, just his second major league home run. He also doubled and scored in the fifth inning. The 29-year-old is hitting .275/.296/.449 in 26 games since being promoted in late July.
Sep 14 - 9:16 PM

Jon Lester threw six scoreless innings in the Athletics' 4-0 shutout of the Mariners Sunday.

Lester surrendered just four hits, all singles, and walked four in the game. He also struck out seven. The win moved Lester to 15-10 on the year, and he owns a 2.45 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 206/46 K/BB ratio through 30 starts. It's the sixth time Lester has reached the 15-win plateau in his career. The 30-year-old will take the mound again Saturday in an interleague tilt with the Phillies.
Sep 14 - 8:33 PM

Luis Sardinas went 3-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored in the Rangers' lopsided 10-3 win over the Braves Sunday.

Sardinas was all over the place for the Rangers, delivering an RBI double in the fourth inning, an RBI single in the fifth and another double, a two-run knock, in the sixth. The good day raised Sardinas' average from .253 to .271 in one game, and he doubled his RBI total with the performance. It's a glimpse of what could be for the 21-year-old.
Sep 14 - 7:57 PM

Marco Gonzales struck out nine while holding the Rockies to one run over 5 2/3 innings in the Cardinals' 4-1 win Sunday.

Gonzales gave up an RBI double to Brandon Barnes in the second inning, one of only four hits he allowed, but he kept the Rockies under wraps for the rest of the day. He did walk four, a downside, but the nine strikeouts were certainly a career best. He's won three straight decisions to move to 3-2. With Michael Wacha's status still up in the air, it's unclear when or if Gonzales will get another start.
Sep 14 - 7:24 PM

Xander Bogaerts went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Red Sox to an 8-4 win over the Royals on Sunday.

Bogaerts hit a three-run homer in the third inning before adding a sacrifice fly in the seventh. He's hit in eight straight games, including blasting three home runs, and the 21-year-old is batting .368 in September. It's a promising finish for Bogaerts after he struggled for much of the season.
Sep 14 - 6:56 PM

David Ortiz left Sunday's game against the Royals to tend to a family emergency.

Ortiz has already left to return home to the Dominican Republic. While he may rejoin the Red Sox in Pittsburgh, fantasy owners shouldn't count on him for the first half of the week.
Sep 14 - 6:31 PM

Jonathan Lucroy went 3-for-4 with two RBI as the Brewers downed the Reds 9-2 on Sunday.

Lucroy collected three singles, with a two-run single in the fourth inning accounting for his two RBI. The catcher, who has had blossomed as a star in 2014, is finishing strong, batting .353 with seven RBI in September. Lucroy is batting .303/.371/.477 on the season.
Sep 14 - 6:25 PM

Trevor May struck out 10 while allowing three runs over six innings in the Twins' 6-4 win over the White Sox Sunday.

May is finally starting to show why the Twins are so high on him, producing his first double-digit strikeout game in seven starts. He gave up just five hits, including a solo homer, and he didn't walk a batter. The win was May's third in a row to bring him to 3-4 on the year. May will look to keep rolling Saturday against the Indians.
