Jen Royle of SB Nation Boston reports that the Red Sox are "going after" free agent Adam LaRoche.

That would indicate that club officials are considering walking away from the three-year contract that they agreed to earlier this winter with Mike Napoli. LaRoche, 33, hit .271/.343/.510 with 33 home runs and 100 RBI in 2012 for the Nationals while earning Gold Glove honors for his defense at first base. The Nats want him back but aren't willing to go beyond two guaranteed years.

Danny Valencia (hamstring) went 0-for-3 on Monday in his first minor league rehab game with High-A Stockton.

Valencia, out since April 20 with a left hamstring strain, also played seven innings at third base. He's expected to be activated when he's first eligible on Friday. Valencia was batting .294/.345/.353 over 14 games prior to the injury.

Twins activated 3B Trevor Plouffe from the 15-day disabled list.

Plouffe, out since April 17 with a right intercostal strain, was cleared to return after playing a pair of minor league rehab games. Eduardo Nunez has swung the bat well while filling in at third base, but he's now likely headed back to a bench role.

Jose Berrios won for the first time in the majors after allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings Monday against the Astros.

Berrios issued five walks to go along with the two homers he allowed, but the homers came with the bases empty. It's still not ideal that he threw just 54 strikes among his 96 pitches, but his stuff is good enough that he'll be able to get away with that kind of thing sometimes. He struck out eight of the 23 batters he faced tonight.

Kolten Wong finally notched his first extra-base hit of the season Monday, smacking a two-run homer in Monday's win over the Phillies.

Wong looked awful in striking out in his first two plate appearances, but he scorched the ball on a lineout to center field in his third at-bat and then went deep in his fourth trip to the dish. He's got an ugly .233/.304/.283 batting line on the season, but perhaps this will get Wong going.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said after Monday's game that Ryan Braun is dealing with "general soreness."

It doesn't sound like a major concern, but Braun is not a sure thing to play Tuesday. The 32-year-old went 3-for-3 on Monday against the Angels and is batting .372/.443/.605 overall this season.

Brandon Crawford's three-run homer in the seventh inning propelled the Giants to a comeback win over the Reds on Monday.

The Reds tagged Johnny Cueto for six runs in the third inning, but then the Big Dread Machine known as the Reds bullpen went to work. JC Ramirez and Drew Hayes were lit up for six runs over their two innings, highlighted by Crawford's bomb. The Giants shortstop also tacked on an RBI single in the ninth. Crawford is hitting .253/.343/.414 with three homers and 10 RBI.

Joey Votto launched a three-run homer in Monday's loss to the Giants.

Votto took former teammate Johnny Cueto deep in the middle of a six-run third inning for the Reds before the club watched their horrid bullpen inevitably cough up the lead. It was the first baseman's lone hit on the night in four trips to the plate, but he'll take it given his struggles so far this season.

Bartolo Colon held the feeble Braves bats at bay Monday, whiffing seven over eight shutout frames in a 4-1 victory.

Colon gave up seven hits, but five of them were singles and he didn't issue any walks. He had thrown only 99 pitches through his eight innings, but Mets manager Terry Collins elected to pull Colon and get closer Jeurys Familia some work. Slated to turn 43 later this month, Colon sports a 2.56 ERA and 28/3 K/BB ratio over 31 2/3 frames. He'll take on the Padres in San Diego this weekend.

Nomar Mazara singled and ripped a go-ahead, solo homer in the eighth inning of Monday's win over the Blue Jays.

Mazara drilled a Gavin Floyd offering over the center field wall to lead off the frame and then helped hold the lead when he threw Michael Saunders out at the plate in the bottom of the inning. The 21-year-old is now sporting a .333/.386/.486 batting line over his first 72 major league at-bats. It's really difficult at this point to see the Rangers sending Mazara down when Shin-Soo Choo (calf) returns.

Tyler Skaggs will be shut down from throwing for another week after being diagnosed with biceps tendinitis.

Skaggs recently came down with some shoulder tightness while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. The southpaw will be reevaluated in a week, after which he could be cleared to resume a throwing program. He's still a ways off from joining the Angels.
