Mets signed OF Andrew Brown to a minor league contract.

The deal includes a spring training invite. Brown has a .224/.284/.396 batting line over 57 games in the major leagues, but he has posted some huge numbers in the minors, particularly against lefties. The 28-year-old hits from the right side and plays the outfield, two huge areas of need for the Mets, so he could contend for a roster spot.

Scooter Gennett (quad) is out of the Brewers' lineup again Thursday.

Gennett left Tuesday's game due to right quad tightness and will now miss his second straight start. He might have to sit for another couple of days. Rickie Weeks is starting at second base again Thursday and will bat fifth against Dillon Gee.

Curtis Granderson is back in Thursday's lineup against the Brewers.

Granderson missed the previous two games due to illness, but he's ready to give it a go. He'll bat leadoff against Matt Garza.

White Sox placed RHP Zach Putnam on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

This comes on the heels of Putnam allowing one unearned run on two hits and two walks over one inning of work Wednesday against the Royals. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined, but Jacob Petricka is now the clear favorite for save chances in Chicago.

Marcus Stroman allowed just one hit over seven innings and combined with two relievers on an 8-0 shutout the Red Sox on Thursday.

Showing once again how huge momentum is in baseball, the Jays ended up winning three straight over Boston after getting crushed 14-1 in Monday's season opener. The Red Sox's lone hit today was Shane Victorino's flare single in the seventh. However, even if that didn't drop in, it's unlikely Stroman would have had a chance to go for the no-no; he was at 97 pitches after seven innings and the Jays are being careful with him. The rookie is now 6-2 with a 3.21 ERA.

David Ortiz is day-to-day with spasms in his upper middle back.

Ortiz left Thursday's game against the Blue Jays in the ninth inning after tweaking his back on a swing. However, it doesn't sound like a major concern.

David Ortiz left Thursday's game against the Blue Jays with an apparent back injury.

Ortiz took a hard check-swing in the ninth inning and immediately grabbed his lower back. The Red Sox should provide a status update shortly on the veteran DH.

Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that the Mariners are calling up infielder Chris Taylor.

Taylor, a fifth-round pick in 2012, owns a promising .328/.397/.497 batting line with five home runs and 14 stolen bases in 75 games this season at Triple-A Tacoma. The 23-year-old shortstop prospect probably isn't being promoted to sit on the bench, so this could mean a significant drop in playing time for the struggling Brad Miller. Taylor is worth a look in deep mixed leagues.

Brandon Morrow (finger) threw off a mound Thursday for the first time since landing on the disabled list.

Morrow has been on the disabled list since early May with a torn tendon sheath in his right index finger. "It was good," the right-hander said of Thursday's short workout. "I still had the tape job on my finger so it’s not completely there, but the bullpen was fine." He could be a relief (or rotation) option for Toronto around late August.

Mariners acquired 1B/DH Kendrys Morales from the Twins for RHP Stephen Pryor.

Morales is back in Seattle after hitting just .234/.259/.325 in 162 plate appearances with the Twins, who signed him to a prorated one-year, $12 million contract in early June. The 31-year-old tallied 23 home runs and 80 RBI last season for the Mariners and will try to recapture that magic down the stretch. He was given a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer from the M's last fall and declined it, leading to his extended unemployment.

Marwin Gonzalez is in the Astros' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon versus the Athletics.

Gonzalez was pulled from Wednesday's game with soreness in his right hamstring -- something he's been dealing with since last week. But it's a manageable injury and he'll start at shortstop on Thursday. Gonzalez is batting .294/.333/.412 so far in July. He took over starting duties from Jonathan Villar at the end of June.

Yoenis Cespedes (thumb) is not in the A's starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Astros.

Cespedes sprained his right thumb on a hard swing late Wednesday night -- after clubbing two home runs earlier in the game. X-rays ruled out a fracture, but the Cuban slugger could need multiple days of rest.
