Mariners sent RHP D.J. Mitchell outright to Triple-A Tacoma.

Mitchell was designated for assignment last month but has cleared waivers and will remain in the organization. He posted a 4.29 ERA over 22 starts and one relief appearance at the Triple-A level in 2012.

Chris Sale struck out 12 in 7 2/3 scoreless innings Friday in the White Sox's 3-0 win over the Angels.

Poor C.J. Wilson got matched up with Sale for the second time in six days and took another tough loss. Sale allowed just four hits and struck out 19 while pitching 16 2/3 scoreless innings over the course of the two outings. He's allowed one run in 24 career innings against the Angels.

Jordan Pacheco went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI in Friday's 10-9 win over the Giants.

Pacheco had an RBI ground out in the bottom of the second inning while his fifth-inning grand slam broke a 5-5 tie. With a .313/.360/.410 batting line over 26 games this season, the 27-year-old continues to be a useful player for Colorado. Todd Helton isn't a good bet to hold up and will require regular rest no matter what, so Pacheco should continue to have value in NL-only leagues.
May 18 - 12:38 AM

David Freese launched a grand slam in Friday's 7-6 win over the Brewers.

Well, that's one way to bust out of a slump. Freese entered play Friday homerless over his first 27 games this season. With the grand slam, he notched his first RBI since May 2. The Cardinals and fantasy owners are hoping that this night will serve as a turning point for his season.
May 17 - 11:36 PM

Aramis Ramirez connected for a pair of three-run homers in Friday's loss to the Cardinals.

Ramirez did his best to keep the Brewers in the ballgame, but it ultimately wasn't enough to keep up with the Cardinals' offensive attack. The 34-year-old has already served a lengthy stint on the DL this season due to a knee injury, but if healthy he should be one of the most valuable fantasy third baseman once again.
May 17 - 11:34 PM

Jason Kipnis blasted a three-run walkoff homer in the tenth inning on Friday, powering the Indians to a 6-3 victory over the Mariners.

Kipnis finished the night 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI, and was also caught stealing. After the first two hitters were retired in the tenth, Drew Stubbs walked and Michael Bourn reached on an infield single before Kipnis' dramatic blast off Lucas Luetge. He's really picked it up once the calendar flipped to May, hitting .295 (18-for-61) with six homers and 19 RBI on the month.
May 17 - 10:59 PM

Kelly Johnson homered and drove home four runs, helping to power the Rays to a 12-10 victory over the Orioles on Friday.

Johnson finished the night 3-for-4 with a homer, double, two runs scored and four RBI. His three-run blast off Jason Hammel in the third inning put the Rays on top for good. He's had a nice career resurrection in Tampa Bay this season, hitting .276/.353/.483 with six homers and 23 RBI.
May 17 - 10:42 PM

Justin Upton smacked a go-ahead grand slam and knocked in five runs in Friday's 8-5 win over the Dodgers.

For all his early success, this was the first time he had driven in more than two runs in a game this season. Upton collected his first RBI with a ground out in the bottom of the third inning and put the Braves ahead with his grand slam off Paco Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth. It was the third grand slam of his career and his first since June 2, 2009. The 25-year-old outfielder currently leads the majors with 14 home runs and is just three shy of his total from all of last year.
May 17 - 10:40 PM

Paul Goldschmidt swatted a pair of two-run homers on Friday, powering the Diamondbacks to a 9-2 victory over the Marlins on Friday.

Goldschmidt finished the outstanding evening 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI. He opened the scoring in the first inning with his first two-run blast off Kevin Slowey, then repeated the feat on the 13th pitch of his next at-bat in the third inning, which included fouling off seven two-strike offerings. He’s been an absolute monster thus far, hitting .338/.421/.656 with 12 homers, 35 RBI and four stolen bases.
May 17 - 9:59 PM

Hiroki Kuroda was dominant Friday night against the Blue Jays, giving up two hits over eight shutout innings as part of a 5-0 victory.

Continued excellent from Kuroda, who issued one walk while striking out five. The veteran right-hander has delivered quality starts in each of his last seven outings and now has a 1.99 ERA for the year. He's quietly one of the best pitchers in the American League.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Padres don't intend to trade Chase Headley.

Headley has remained firm in his stance that he doesn't want to discuss a contract extension during the season, but that hasn't caused the Padres to panic. The 28-year-old third baseman won't become a free agent until after the 2014 season, so there is still plenty of time for the two sides to work out an agreement. And if they can't, the Padres can always explore the possibility down the road.
May 17 - 8:25 PM

Brett Anderson was diagnosed with a navicular stress fracture of his right foot and will be shut down for four weeks.

Rough news for Anderson, who just can't seem to stay healthy. The 25-year-old southpaw is set to be reevaluated after four weeks, so his actual return to the Athletics likely won't be until around the early part of July. Dan Straily is filling his spot in the rotation for now, but the A's could turn to Sonny Gray if he continues to struggle.
